Indien jy ‘n vuurwapen besit hou dit by-

Spanpoging skrik aanvaller afknipper" (boltcutter) bygedam.

Disability awareness month

As SA nears the end of the 2015 Disability Right Awareness Month, Casual Day is wrapping up its 2015 campaign and launching its National Schools Programme for 2016.

“School governing bodies, teachers and parents are encouraged to put Casual Day on their official 2016 calenders now,” says Casual Day project leader Van-essa du Plessis. “Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM) provides South Africa with an opportunity to inspire hope and confidence in the ability of communi-

ties and the state machinery to work together in ad-dressing the common challenges facing persons with disabilities and society in general.

“Since schools are a significant aspect of govern-ment and schools are where values and morals are in-culcated, we encourage government bodies to ensure that Casual Day is celebrated in each and every public and private school in SA.

“To date Casual Day has contributed over R222 million to the funding of organisations providing edu-cation, assistive devices, shelter and employment to the almost 15% of the population who have disabili-ties."

MOSESETJANE – Police were forced to fire rubber bullets to disperse protesters who violently protested at Ivanplats’ (Platreef) last week Thursday.

Police also reported fire damage to one of the mine contractors’ temporary offices at Lesedi (not at the mine construction site).

Ten men and three women were ar-rested for public violence as protests got out of hand, confirmed police spokesperson of Mahwelereng, constable Sello Leso. He added that some 200 protestors were cast-ing stones at the gate of the mine’s Lesedi Project.

The mine’s spokesperson, Jeremy Mi-chaels said Ivanplats strongly condemns the recent violence by a handful of people who do not understand that such behaviour is unacceptable and unlawful. “Ivanplats recog-

Protests take a violent turnnises the right to peaceful protest, we have indeed responded to the various demands made by some community members and we encourage anyone in our host communities to contact the company if they need information or want to discuss any concerns with us," he said.

"We have had extensive engagements with our host communities and will continue to do so but we will not be held to ransom by a few lawless individuals who have no respect for the right of others,” Michaels added, saying that Ivanplats is creating many new jobs in Mokopane and is creating oppor-tunities for small businesses which will help to create indirect jobs and stimulate the local economy. "More than that we cannot do and we urge community members to understand that violent protest sends a very bad message to those who want to do business and create jobs in and around Mokopane.”

Celebrating eight years on the airMOKOPANE - Capricorn FM, the largest independent com-mercial radio station celebrated its 8th Birthday last week Thursday. Capricorn FM has given the residents of Limpopo the platform to voice out their opinions concerning issues affecting their community. Said Thabiso Kotane, the station manager: “This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without our loyal listeners” . MAHWELERENG – Mahwelereng shopping mall will be one of several malls in South Af-rica that will be safer this shopping season with the installation of a Shopping Mall cash recycling system (SMCR) that ensures cash is not moved on the shopping centre floor but via hidden airtubes.

The SMCR solution, developed by cash services and solutions company SBV Ser-vices, reduces stockholding of cash and valuables on site and ensures that money is moved in an undetectable way. Most shop owners are at highest risk during the move-ment of cash and valuables into and out of their premises. The SMCR process, which is made up of a system of air tubes to a secure vault, makes it almost impossible for crimi-nals to work out how and when cash is being moved, and enables businesses and banks to minimise stockholding on site in order to

Innovative solution to deter crimereduce losses in case of robbery. At the same time, they have the ability to easily access cash if they require more.

There are currently six malls and business districts that have implemented this system including the Greenstone Mall, Cradlestone Mall, Eastgate Shopping Centre, Secunda Mall, Mahwelereng and The Pavilion with more on the cards to be installed within the next 18 months.

Once the system becomes standard, and criminals realise that the secure manner in which cash and valuables are moved at cen-tres is making attacks more difficult, robber-ies will decrease.

SBV Services is a proud partner to the banking industry and is equally owned by ABSA Bank Limited, FirstRand Bank Limited, The Standard Bank of SA Limited and Ned-bank Limited.

SEKGAGAPENG - A 13-year-old boy drowned in the Mogalakwena River in Sekgagapeng on Wednesday af-ternoon after the canoe he was in capsized.

According to Mahwelereng po-lice spokesperson, const. Sello Leso, Themba Kabelo Kekana was with his two friends shortly before the drown-ing.

His friends told police that he went to his grandmother’s house where he changed into shorts. They then went to the river where Kekana got into the river on a canoe. He ignored the pleas of his friends who implored him to re-turn to the safety of the bank.

Prince Dube, a member of the commu-nity later pulled the child’s lifeless body from the river.

SELEKA – Communications Minister, Faith Muthambi visited the R850-billion solar power plant run by Italian company Enel Energies between Seleka and Tom Burke ap-proximately 5 kilometers from the Botswana border on Monday.

The power plant is expected to be com-pleted in March 2016 and to be fully opera-tional in August 2016. “The project covers an area of 148 hectares and will supply 66 megawatts of power that will be sufficient for the needs of about 40 000 South African families,” said the power plant’s CEO Lam-berto Dai Pra.

“This project is one of many highlighted by President Jacob Zuma in his nine point plan in August,” said Muthambi. The nine point plan focusses on resolving the energy challenge and also revitalising agriculture and the agro-processing value chain.

According to Dai Pra, Enel is not only concerned with providing a fully functional power plant but also want to contribute posi-tively to the area in which they are based. “We have one social development project where we want to provide free wifi to certain rural areas and another project where we encourage HIV positive mothers to become

mentors for other HIV positive women.”Muthambi stressed that projects by the

energy company should focus on historically disadvantaged areas. “The rural areas have

so much potential and capacity that is under used at this stage and I would really like to see big companies getting involved in these places.”

SELEKA – During Communications Minister, Faith Muthambi’s visit to the solar power station and the ANC Imbizo held in Seleka on Monday she made time to meet with some of the families in the area.

Seleka chief, Phetogo Seleka escorted Muthambi to the house of the Ntsweleng family who explained that they are living in a small house without running water or elec-tricity. “Since we applied for an RDP house in 2006, we have not received feedback from the government,” Mary Ntsweleng said.

Lephalale mayor, Jack Maeko, made a commitment that the family will be provided with assistance within ten days.

The power plant was a point of conten-tion earlier this year when residents from Seleka held a protest outside the premises demanding that there should be no political interference when employing workers and that 50% of the workforce should be female.

According to Lephalale mayor, Jack Maeko, almost 99% of the workers at the power plant are local people.

“There are about 260 people working here and most of them come from the sur-rounding villages.”

Minister meets Seleka residentsSELEKA – Despite widespread controversy regarding the Government’s proposed digi-tal migration, Communications Minister, Faith Muthambi painted a very positive picture of the migration away from analogue broadcasting during her visit to the area on Monday.

The proposed digital migration will force television viewers to install a set box that connects to a satellite that transmits a spe-cific signal in order to view television chan-nels that could up to now be received via an antenna. Despite missing the analogue switch off deadline in June 2015 Muthambi assured parliament in August that the digital migration programme was on track.

During this session in parliament Muth-ambi and her partners, the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa, and the South African Post Office were grilled on the availability of local content once the country has migrated to digital signals.

Funds approved by treasury for the dis-tribution only amounted to R146-million while R771-million is needed to carry out the project.

According to Muthambi switching from analogue to digital signals holds many ad-vantages for viewers. “People in areas who struggled to find a proper signal will now be able to receive a clear picture and it will also boost the economy because the set boxes will be manufactured in South Africa by local labourers.”

Because digital signals take up less band-width than analogue signals more television channels can be broadcast in the same band-width giving viewers the potential of more channels to choose from. Viewers will incur a once-off cost to buy a set box. Free chan-nels like SABC and etv will still be available for free.

Digital migration on track

The switchover from analogue to digital will be compulsory and is expected to start in January 2016 despite concerns raised that it might be too expensive for low income households. Government decided to hand over 500 000 set boxes which was one of the reasons for the Imbizo that took place in Seleka.

During her visit the minister did not ela-borate on the progress of the programme and instead focused her speech on the work done by the Lephalale municipality stating that she was satisfied with her visit to Seleka. “I will be returning in three months time to see whether some of the issues that were raised during my visit have been addressed,” she said.

LEPHALALE – The TVET college hosted an event on Wednesday for lo-cal role players and business people to showcase the relevance of their courses in today’s workplace.

“Our aim is to ensure that our stu-dents are employable after graduation by giving them in-ser-vice training in the field of their studies,” said Henry Makgae, one of the organizers at the event and lec-turer at the college.

The Department of Higher Education and Training’s First Things First campaign was activated at Waterberg Technical and Vo-cational Education and Training (TVET) College by the Deputy Minister, Mduduzi Manana.

The event was held at the Engineering and Skills Training Centre in Lebowakgomo on 23 February 2015, where personnel and students were encouraged to have them-selves tested for HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and tuberculosis (TB). Since the beginning of this campaign the college has seen just above 1 000 students tested.

First Things First contributes to an objec-tive of the 2012-2016 National Strategic Plan for HIV, STIs and TB to maximise oppor-tunities for testing for HIV. The programme provides for the testing of large numbers us-

Higher Education and Training Deputy Minister Mduduzi Manana says “the depart-ment is pleased with the uptake of learners in the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system”.

While acknowledging that there are some challenges, the Deputy Minister said there was a need for all stakeholders including col-lege management, the Student Representa-tive Council and students to work together. We need to work together (college manage-ment, SRC, students, etc.). “This is a skills revolution; we will never agree on everything but let us find solutions and find one another, be part of the solution and minimise disrup-tions and destructions," said Mr Mduduzi Manana.

lege Council, under the leadership of Profes-sor Lesiba Teffo are continuing to guide the College in the right direction. The College Management is proud to have you all as part of our College family and may God give you more wisdom.

This has been a successful year for Waterberg TVET College students both in terms of academic and extra-curricular ac-tivities. The academic performance of our students is good and there is hope for great results at the end of the year.

The College is proud to have produced the best woman in the debate competitions, Ms Lerato Malatjie, who participated in a competition of students from institutions of higher learning, including universities and obtained position one. Waterberg TVET Col-lege has further produced a student who received a scholarship to go and study IT in one of the institutions of higher learning in the USA. Mr Christopher Manamela left the country in July 2015.

The College netball team under the best

and highly committed coach, Constable Violet Mofomme has obtained position one again in the 2015 COSSA national sports competitions. We thank Constable Mofomme’s employer, the South African Police Services for allowing her to make a contribution to the development of young people in Mahwelereng community.

This and all other achievements of the College during 2015 can be attributed to the good working relationship that the College has with the community of Mogalakwena Municipality. May God strengthen the rela-tionship between Waterberg TVET College and all its stakeholders.

God has indeed blessed Waterberg TVET College as we will be opening doors of our new Thabazimbi Campus in 2016, in order to continue to serve in that part of Waterberg District and we look forward to bringing hope to the people of Thabazimbi Municipality.

Waterberg TVET College appreciates the services and support that we receive from the business community and sponsors, including

Anglo Platinum Mine. Let us continue to uphold the principles

of honesty and integrity as we continue to work together.

I wish all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year ahead.

Student exchange programs, both foreign and domestic, provide college students with opportunities that they simply could not get anywhere else. Whether students want to travel in order to broaden their horizons or experience a new culture, there are plenty of benefits to be had.

A star student from the TVET College, Christopher Manamela, has been admitted to the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois state, United States of America (USA).

He will be receiving on the job training in Information Technology, through participa-tion in a structured training programme. The training will see Mr Manamela spending one academic year in USA.

“It was in 2013 when I first registered with Waterberg TVET College, I knew it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I am truly honored to have been a student at the IT Centre campus and I really appreciate the generous support that was offered to me throughout my time at the college,” said Mr Manamela.

Mr Manamela alluded that growing up in a less privileged community has not only offered financial and academic challenges, but has also helped him realize the value of a college education.

“My educational pursuits would not be possible if it wasn’t for Waterberg TVET College paving a strong foundation for my dream to become a Computer and informa-tion research scientist,” he said.

The Community College Initiative (CCI) Program provides a quality academic pro-gram at U.S. community colleges intended to build technical skills, enhance leadership capabilities, and strengthen English language proficiency.

The program also provides opportunities for professional internships, service learning, and community engagement activities.

On 22 July 2015, the Waterberg TVET College was treated to a day of new dawn, when a team of motivational speakers from ‘I can Foundation’ visited the College to speak to students, staff members as well as management. The pur-pose of the event was to improve efficiency of the employees and students, to boost the morale of the employees, and to foster harmonious relationships within the department and interdepartmental relationships. Dr David Molapo, using a fine combination of humor, an incredible stage presence and his personal life experiences mesmerised the audience with his message of hope.

Limpopo Public TVET Colleges heeded the call from the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training to join the country in celebrating the 'Decade of Artisanship'. The Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training has declared the month of August as the TVET month where Colleges are ex-pected to promote artisanship development programmes.

The Colleges embarked on the provincial road show from the 3rd to the 27th August 2015, under the theme “Celebrating a Decade of Artisanship with the College Community”. Waterberg TVET College hosted a two days celebration in Zebediela Lepelle-Nkumpi and Regorogile in Thabazimbi Municipalities.

This was an awareness campaign for school children and out of school youth to know that choosing a career in Engineering and working towards being an artisan is eco-nomically “cool”.

During the programme learners at the schools were furnished with information regarding steps to be followed to become an artisan, courses offered by different TVET Colleges and bursaries or funding available for those who want to study towards this career. The College Principal, Ms Selaelo Lekoloane, told the learners that “there are plenty of post-school training options avail-able to them other than the university route, and artisanship is one of them”.

sure that the learners are entertained while being educated on the other hand. There was a session for questions and answers where learners were awarded promotional materi-als.

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) launched its Decade of the Artisan programme, which aims to place artisanship as a career of choice for young people, in order to address the shortage ar-tisan skills that have the potential to cripple the economy of this country. While the coun-try currently survives with a few artisans who are about to retire or is able to import required Artisans at a given time, it has set a target of producing 30 000 artisans annually by 2030.

The 'Decade of the Artisan' programme is spearheaded by the DHET and the cam-paigns in Limpopo Province and in other Provinces are aimed at attracting youth and the unemployed people who are still eco-nomically active to play their part in growing the economy of this country through skills development.

The campaign is in line with the National Development Plan which is aligned to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).Expansion of sustainable job opportunities for South African school leavers and unemployed citizens is at the fore-front of government’s priorities thus every institution in the country has to play its part in contributing to this eco-nomic development programme.

The United Nations Association of South Africa – University of Pretoria Chapter (UNASA-UP) under the auspices of the United Nations Infor-mation Centre (UNIC) Pretoria and the De-partment of Interna-tional Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), invited Waterberg TVET College to the third Model United Na-tions South African Universities (MUNSAU) Conference.

The Conference and competitions, focussed on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Post-2015 Agenda, were held from 10 July to 13 July 2015 at the University of Pretoria and at DIRCO, re-spectively.

Fourteen students from Waterberg TVET College formed part of the 60 delegates from various South African universities including special guests from embassies and inter-national organizations participating in the four-day debating conference comprising of the simulation of the United Nations General Assembly, social enrichment and seminars.

The Department of Higher Educa-tion and Training (DHET) has, since its inception in 2009, made great strides advancing post-school educa-tion and training opportunities in SA.

The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, unveiled the plaque to commemorate the construction of the Thabazimbi Campus of Waterberg Technical Voca-tional Education and Training (TVET) College on 21 June 2015. The cam-pus is scheduled to open its doors for the 2016 academic year.

The Thabazimbi Campus will open its doors to prospective students in the Janu-ary 2016 academic year. Programmes that will be offered will include Electrical Infra-structure Construction, Boilermaking, Fitter & Turner, Office Administration, Electrical Engineering, Engineering & Related Design (Automotive), Diesel Mechanic, Management Assistant as well as Business Management.

Dr Nzimande said: “One of our major focuses is to bring institutions of higher edu-cation and training to areas that have histori-cally been neglected, especially rural areas such as this one, throughout the country, and it is with a huge amount of pride that we open such an institution in Thabazimbi.”

“We are aware that employment oppor-tunities are scarce and far between, and that this frustrates many. We therefore call upon our youth to take it upon themselves - in a similar manner as the youth of 1976 - to actively seek out and participate in activities that build instead of waiting passively for help to come to them.”

Waterberg TVET College Principal, Ms Selaelo Lekoloane said: “Waterberg TVET College is grateful that we are given the man-date to run this state-of-the-art Thabazimbi Campus. We commit ourselves to look after it and provide relevant technical and voca-tional skills required for the young and adult people in Thabazimbi, and the surrounding villages to find jobs in the local mines and businesses.”

"We have to maximally use this massive facility of the Thabazimbi Campus and there-fore, the campus cannot afford to close at 15:00, but we will have to implement occu-pational programmes and qualifications and extend their teaching and learning duration to 21:00 at night in order to accommodate those who would want to attend classes only

2015 MUNSAU Con-ference Best Position Paper. “I’m very proud of myself for being awarded the Best Posi-tion Paper in the confer-ence which was full of university students, it took hard work and a lot of research for me to achieve this,” said Lerato.

Recently, Mr Christo-pher Manamela, an IT student at the IT and Computer Science Campus won a scholar-ship and was admitted to study Information Technology at one of the community colleges in the United States of America (USA) for almost eight months.

From the same Campus in 2013, Mr Daniel Masenya, a Tourism student won a scholarship and was also admitted at What-com in Washington State, USA. Mr Daniel Masenya returned to South Africa in June 2014 and is now placed at the College as an Intern and serves as the College ambas-sador. “We are proud of our students and lecturers,” said Ms Selaelo Lekoloane, Prin-cipal of Waterberg TVET College. Lesiba Teffo, assured the minister and every-one present that the college will work hard to produce good results that will complement the state-of-the-art campus entrusted to it.

Mayor Patricia Mosito of Thabazimbi Mu-nicipality expressed her gratitude and com-mended the minister for bringing the TVET College to the community that was in dire need of a higher learning institution.

The event was attended by the Limpopo Provincial Legislature Speaker, the Acting Mayor of Waterberg District, the Mayors of Capricorn District Municipality and Thaba-zimbi, DG, DDG and officials of the DHET, the CEOs and representatives of SETAs, vice chancellors and university representatives, Limpopo Department of Education in the province and district, council members, col-lege principals, officials and SRC chairper-sons and students from all Limpopo TVET Colleges.

In recent times the National Livestock Pre-vention Forum (NSTPF) has been involved in many meetings all over the country and it is obvious that the statistics regarding the non-reporting of livestock is not over exag-gerated.

Statistics South Africa reported in 2011 that 36.3% of stock theft cases were not re-ported by the victims and in 2012, this num-ber rose to 40.1% and in 2013 it increased drastically to 63%.

The non-reporting of stock theft cases by livestock owners can be attributed to various reasons according to Statistics South Africa. Firstly, 31.8% of livestock theft cases are not reported due to a lack of trust in the capabil-ity of the SAPS to recover the stolen stock and/or to prosecute the case successfully.

Secondly, 30.2% of livestock owners believe that it is not an important enough crime to report to the authorities. This refers to small numbers that are stolen (one or two sheep etc). Thirdly, 11.8% of the victims of livestock theft use other methods to resolve the crimes, such as to report it to local au-thorities or neighborhood watch. Fourthly, in 8.8% of the cases the SAPS were not avail-able or reachable.

Report livestock theft There is no region in the country that is not plagued by livestock theft although the number vary from region to region and province to province. It is important to re-member that the number of livestock theft units, the number of staff, vehicles, equip-ment, etc. of the SAPS is determined by the number of cases in an area or region.

What are the consequences for the livestock producer when deciding to report a case? At first, due to the under-staffing of the unit, there are not enough staff to attend to the matter when needed in the first place and secondly, there will not be enough vehicles to be able to attend to the crime scene. Therefore, instead of having a reaction time of an hour, the reaction time is 12 hours because there is a lack of staff and vehicles. The question to ask now is, who created this predicament, the live-stock producer who decided not to report the crime or the community themselves? Yes, livestock producers are the victims of their own choices, by not reporting cases.

The NSTPF wishes to urge all livestock producers not to hesitate in reporting live-stock theft cases. If a community can claim that all cases are reported and still they are dealt a bad hand, action can be taken, but not before then.
