In an ideal world all children would be able to enjoy a safe, happy and healthy childhood. However, for some chil-dren this is an elusive dream.Often coming from disadvantaged back-grounds, the children not only have to cope with ill health challenges, but also a lack of funds which impedes access to effec-tive health care. To cope with these challenges, Waterberg TVET College decided to lend a helping hand to the needy.Jan Mabitsi, a lecturer at the college took his lear-

ners to Zamokuhle Day-Care Centre, where they planted spinach. He also used his spare time to make sure that the spinach is well looked after.

“These people need to be taken care of and this project will give them something to eat and earn some money for running the Centre” said Mabitsi.

Zamokuhle Day-Care Centre is a home for 35 physically challenged children situated in Moshate, Mokopane. The centre was started in 2001 by Nomangisi Mahlangu, who is also dis-abled.

The spinach is sold at the Centre. For more information contact Nomangisi Maria Mahlangu on 072 294 2073. - Itumeleng Lekganyane

The Neighbourhood Watch in Onverwacht said non-residents who claim to be regis-tered with the neighbourhood watch are creating controversy in the area by taking the law into their own hands.

In a statement to Northern News, the Neighbourhood Watch reports that there was an incident last week where a man was assaulted for no apparent reason by another man claiming to be a neighbourhood watch member. “After thorough investigation it was found that the suspect was not a registered member of the neighbourhood watch nor of the Community Policing Forum (CPF).”

“I personally contacted all parties involved and assisted the victim to address the issue,” says Mariaan Wiid of the Neighbourhood Watch. “I am proud to say that within ten hours of receiving the complaint via the Facebook group ‘Lephalale News’, the issue was resolved.”

She added that she would like to apologise to the victim on behalf of the community. “I want to ensure all residents that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated and any person who does not operate within the framework of the law will be dealt with accord-ingly.”

All residents, institutions and businesses in the Onverwacht policing precinct are in-vited to get involved with the policing of the area and to report any suspicious activities and/or persons. The forum is designed for community members to address their safety and security issues with SAPS and the broader community.

“We are all aware that Onverwacht is targeted by criminals,” says Widd, adding that the Lephalale SAPS has limited resources to cover the area. “The community can ben-efit through collective targeted actions to drive criminals away from the area.”

The DA lodged a complaint with the green scorpions re-garding the Lepha-lale municipality’s contravention of various environ-mental and water laws by pumping raw sewerage into the veld close to a residential area in Onverwacht.

Residents said they have complained to the municipality about workers pumping sewage onto a gravel road behind their homes, but to no avail. The DA visited the scene on Tuesday. There was a bad smell in the air and people were also worried about health issues that may arise from the raw sewage.

According to the municipality’s communications officer, Valerie Cilliers, the munici-pality appointed a ‘Honeysucker’ operator. The candidate is undergoing training. Cilliers said the municipality would look into a better temporary solution for the interim.

Complaint laid against municipality

Petrus Morgan Ngobeni (26) died on the scene after being stabbed with a knife repeatedly by the accused Hlengani Phillip Ndlovu (20).

Ndlovu was arrested at the scene and arrested for murder. Ndlovu allegedly slapped Ngobeni’s girlfriend in the face before

getting into a fight with him. He appeared in court on 10 October and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The department of health and the Mahwelereng Youth Centre is adamant that it needs to find reasons for an increase in teenage pregnancy despite their best efforts.

Members of the youth centre visits all the schools in the area annually to teach learners about abstinence and the different birth control methods. The youth centre also counsel teachers on how to support learners emotionally. Last week the social development department hosted a youth dialogue between parents, teenagers and health professionals at the youth centre of Hope at Hospital view. This time they touched on the topic of male involvement in the campaign and educating men on their role in teenage pregnancies. - Itumeleng Lekganyane

Nou weet ek.

“Watse koers?” wil ek weet.

Nou verstaan ek niks.

The Minister of public service and admin-istration, Collins Chabane, visited public service providers in Lephalale last Friday. The visit forms part of an initiative that was launched nationally by the department in September with the theme “reinventing the way public servants work.”

The minister was welcomed by the Lep-halale Mayor, Jack Maeko, and the district executive mayor, Rosina Mogotlane, at the municipality last Friday. The Mayor accom-panied the minister on a tour of the local department of home affairs and the clinic in Marapong. Public servants were also invited to engage with the minister at a function held at the Mogol Club afterwards.

Mayor Maeko welcomed the initiative saying that public service is part of the ANC led government’s mandate to create a united,

Lephalale municipality hosted community members of Seleka and Mohlasedi villages for the official opening of the Seleka sta-dium and the Mohlasedi access road Last Thursday. Limpopo Premier, Stanley Matha-batha, and Lephalale Mayor, Jack Maeko, welcomed the community in celebration of the completion of these two projects.

The Mayor said the municipality is com-mitted to delivering roads and services to rural areas. At the event several wheelchairs were handed over to disabled residents. Five learners who were awarded scholarships to study medicine in Cuba each also received a laptop which was co-sponsored by the municipality, Exxaro and Groothoek mine. The mayor encouraged the youth to take their education seriously.

The Premier congratulated the municipal-ity and asked the community to use the facil-ity to their advantage and to look after it. He said the sports facility is important to keep

The sports facility can accommodate 3 500 people and will eventually facilitate dif-ferent activities such as soccer, track, tennis, volleyball, netball and squash. The stadium was built with funds from the Municipal infrastructure grant (MIG) of which the mu-nicipality is required to use 15% to build and implement sports and recreation facilities. Around 30 local people were employed dur-ing the construction of the facility.

The access road to Mohlasedi village is a 3.5km tar road, making it much easier for private and public transport to access the area. Construction on the road started in April this year after it became clear that the gravel road could not carry the large amount of busses that transport community members daily. During the construction of the road al-together 27 local people were employed.

The minister in turn spoke about the chal-lenges facing public servants when there are not enough resources. He vowed to come up with a programme to better equip public ser-vants so that they can attend to the needs of the community.

He told the delegates that the depart-ment will work hand in hand with the local municipality to improve public services in the area. “We must make sure that text books are delivered on time; that hospitals are well stocked; that ID’s are issued on time; that social grants are paid out and that the local police are resourced and staffed to ensure a safer community.”

Van toeka tot nou...

Mariska Ehlers ([email protected])

Generaal A.H Potgieter en Generaal A.W.J Pretorius teweeggebring is.

Noordelike Nuus sal in toekomstige uitgawes hieroor skryf .

This past weekend saw cyclists of all ages participate in the second Debtsafe CANSA

MTB Challenge, which took place at the National Zoological Gardens Mokopane. This year’s Challenge proved to be the most successful event yet, with an overwhelming response seen from the community and riders.

Hein du Plessis, race organiser, says that the growth of the Challenge over the past two years has been exceptional. “This year, we re-ceived a massive 353 entries, and each year this number rises. We are definitely looking forward to seeing the race grow even more in the future, especially when considering that mountain biking is SA’s fastest growing sport. The event really helps in creating the ideal platform to spread vital awareness in the sup-port of CANSA.”

“Perhaps the most exciting development of all is that the Challenge is now a Cycling SA sanctioned qualifier for Limpopo Colours (30km and 60km). Furthermore, as of this year, a 1km distance race was also added to the Challenge as an alternative to the scooter race and 10km race meaning that kids can also now participate,” continues du Plessis.

With the Challenge being more family-orientated this year, it was no surprise that each participant gave it their best shot across more challenging terrains, longer stretches and climbs across the four respective distance options of 1km, 10km, 30km and 60km. “A variety of food and craft stalls, as well as an iPad and Mountain Bike raffle added to the ‘family experience’ the day had to offer,” adds du Plessis.

In spite of this year’s course being the most challenging yet, a number of cyclists excelled and stood out from the crowd go-ing on to take the top positions in this year’s Challenge. “We look forward to next year’s event taking place on 10 October 2015, and we have already started discussing how to further improve and add to the excitement of the experience in years to come,” du Plessis concludes.

Race results are as follows:
