PALLETIZING TIMER MODEL CT-8

Figure 1 - Model CT-8 Timer

DESCRIPTION

The Model CT-8 T’ tmer is a solid-state sequential timing device that has four (4) timers and two

(2) output channels.

A photocell-light source triggering device starts the timing sequence which consists of an initial time interval followed by three additional independent time intervals.

The initial time interval may be programmed to provide a delay or duration sequence depending

upon application requirements.

The CT-8 Timer may be used in conjunction with a single-acting pump applicator and automatic

gun(s) to accurately position hot melt beads on cases in palletizing applications.

In such an application the initial time interval and three following interval sequences signal the

single-acting pump. The second and forth time interval trigger the automatic gun(s).

NOTE: The CT-8 has two output channels each capable of accommodating a maximum current draw of 2 amperes @ 24 VDC. However, no more than 2 amperes may

be actuated during any one time interval.

OPERATION

The CT-8 Timer is signalled by a photocell-light source.

The gun(s) solenoid 24 VDC only, is connected electrically to the gun output channel of the timer terminals #ll and 412 on TB-1.

The single-acting pump solenoid (24 VDC only) is connected to the pump output channel (terminals #9 and #lo on TB-1).

NOTE: Each gun must be activated by its own solenoid. The CT-8 will accommodate a maximum of two 24 VDC solenoids with a maximum current draw of 2 amperes.

Circuit Board Controls

The CT-8 offers two time ranges for each time interval. The time range is selected by moving a slide switch to the appropriate position.

Each slide switch corresponds with a single-turn potentiometer located on the cabinet face.

Switch ~ I- Time Interval1

A TI-1 B TI-2 C TI-3 D TI-4

Sliding the switches toward the rear of the cabinet provides the low (short) time range.

Sliding the switches toward the front of the cab- inet provides the high (long) time range.

The PUMP INTERVAL OUTPUT switch E de- termines whether the single-acting pump will be actuated during the first time interval.

Sliding switch E toward the 0

front of the cabinet will cause thepump to actuate during the Time Interval 1.

Sliding switch E toward the 0 rear of the cabinet will delay the pump actuating until Time Interval 2. Figure 6 - Circuit Board

General

TROUBLESHOOTING

As with any solid-state device, the Model CT-8 requires no periodic maintenance unless the unit is subjected to adverse environmental conditions such as dust, vibration or moisture. Neverthe- less, difficulties may occur with the operation of a timer system. Before trouble shooting the CT-8, determine that the problem does in fact rest with the control.

Applicator Operation

The capability of an applicator is also a factor in obtaining satisfactory operation. Insure that air pressure to the pump and the gun solenoids are correct and constant. Erratic gun firing can result if the triggering air pressure is inadequate.

Operating air to the solenoid must be filtered to remove dirt and water. Lubrication usual I y is not required.

Physical Conditions

The guns should be mounted securely, and the distance to the substrate should be uniform and constant.

Air movement around the guns can have an adverse effect upon the system’s operation. The guns should be shielded from moving air that cannot otherwise be eliminated.

CT-8 Operation

Trouble shooting the CT-8 usually can be limited to the terminal board (in the upper right corner of the cabinet) and the potentiometers.

If the adhesive output lamps (on the cabinet face) flash, the problem is probably outside the Time Interval Control.

The following chart will help in checking out the CT-8 unit:

TROUBLE SHOOTING, (Continued)

PROBLEM I CAUSE I

Guns fire erratical I y Check photocell/light source (or limit switch) Check potentiometers Check gun solenoid coil Replace circuit board

Shut off all power to the CT-8 before opening the control cabinet. Use the cir- cuit breaker you installed ahead of the timer. Conduct all continuity and re- sistance checks with the power off.

To check the sinale-turn dials:

1. Unplug the printed circuit board at Jl (refer to Electrical Diagram).

2. Rotate the dials counter-clockwise to zero.

3. Attach an ohmmeter to the two outside terminals on the potentiometer.

4. Set the meter to the 1OOK scale.

5. Slowly rotate the dial clockwise. The resistance should increase steadily to 1OOK ohms. if the resistance drops off during the test replace the potentiometer. (A dead spot in the potentiometer may cause erratic gun firing.)

6. Repeat this test with each potentiometer.

To check the transformer primary:

1. Turn on the power to the Time Interval Control ,,

2. A voltage reading within the operating line voltage limits should be obtained between terminal #l on TB-1 and the ground stud (at the top of the cabinet).

Be careful. Electrical shock can be deadly. Do not come in contact with the electrically hot terminal board.

To check the transformer secondary:

1. Turn on the power to the Time Interval Control ,

2. Push the timer toggle switch to ON.

3. Check the voltage across pins two red wire I eads) .

#3 and #5 in the six-pin circuit board plug (these are the A reading between 20 and 30 VAC should be obtained. If not, re-

place the transformer.

Electrical shock can kill. Do not come in contact with the input power leads on TB-1 (terminals #l, #2, and #3).

To check the solenoid circuit voltage:

1. Turn on the CT-8. P lug in the circuit board at Jl .

2. Check the voltage across terminal #9 on TB-1 and the ground stud (at the top of the cab- inet). A reading between 24 and 28 VDC should be obtained. If not, replace the transistor or circuit board.

To check the gun solenoid for proper resistance:

1. Shut off power to the CT-8.

2. Remove the solenoid lead wires from terminals #9, #lo, #ll and #12 on TB-1.

3. Check for proper resistance across each solenoid coil. If the reading does not meet this specificiation, replace the solenoid.

NOTE: If the circuit board fuse blows, check the solenoids for proper resistance.

To check the photosensor/light source:

1.

2.

3.

4.

Turn on power to the Time Interval Control.

Check the voltage across terminals #7 and #8 on TB-1. A reading of 6.3 VAC should be obtained. If not, replace the transformer.

NOTE: In the case of a photocel I trigger device, care should be taken to insure the photocell and light source are in line. If the are not proper1 in line the system wi II not function. Check to see that t tI e light beam is i eing pro- jetted in the direction the light source is aimed.

Check the photosensor e lectrica I connections ,, The black lead and the ground shield must be connected to terminal #4. The red lead is connected to terminal #5 (breaklight

mode).

Confirm the phototransistor receiver alignment. With the timer power ON, test for minimum voltage (less than .5 volt) across the red and black leads. See 57-o-10 for complete instructions.
