OUTDOOR ED. SURF TRIP —TORQUAY

On the 18th and 19th of Feb the Year 10 Outdoor Ed

group set off for their first camp for 2021, a surfing

adventure to the coastal town of Torquay. After a

long bus trip, we headed straight to the Torquay surf

beach for a bite of lunch before heading to the

Australian Surf Museum for a tour, where we learnt

about the history of surfing and checked out some

extremely old and valuable surf boards. After the tour

finished, we hit the surf outlets and hunted for a

bargain or 2 for an hour or so, before we went and

had a look at the iconic Bells Beach. The evening

consisted of heading into Torquay for dinner before

retiring to our tents for the night. An early start had us

hitting the waves at Anglesea at 8am on the Friday,

and all the students did an amazing job working on

their surfing skills. The students did a fantastic job

representing NSC, and I am looking forward to many

awesome trips with these students.

Middle School Drama—Excursion Australian Shakespeare Company

"On the 9th of March the Middle School

Drama class went to the Royal Botanical

Gardens and met the great crew and

cast of the Australian Shakespeare

Company. Then we watched the

rehearsal of the Midsummer Night Dream.

We learnt that they put carpet on the

outdoor stage to reduce slipping over

when it is wet. Then we went to the

Athenaeum Theatre and we met Paul

and he showed us around and back

stage and we learnt that sailors used to

work backstage because ropes are used

for the lights. Then we went to the

costume and props warehouse and were

allowed to put on capes. Kaspa told us

that paints need to be stored in cooler

areas or it goes off, and so does make

up."

Hayden Kawau and Bailey Stevenson volunteered for the Meals on Wheels

program to support the vulnerable in our community.

Norma Freeman was grateful for the meal she received.

Clean up Australia Day To deal with the growing amount of litter around the school, Year 11 VCAL students took on the

challenge of organising a school event for Clean Up Australia Day on Friday the 5th March. The

Year 11s held a BBQ, offering free sausages in exchange for a bag of rubbish. This encouraged a

terrific turnout, and a combined total of 10kg of trash was collected! Thank you to everyone

who participated! Special thanks to Meat on Melville who sponsored the event.

Senior School Laptops: VCE and VCAL Requirements

Students who arrive to class without their laptop will have the following message sent

home via text.

“_________ has left their laptop at home. If possible, we are asking for the Laptop to be

bought to school. Thank you for your support with this.”

The student will be asked to work in the library with alternative work provided to them until

their Laptop can be dropped to school.

Students will not be permitted to leave the school grounds to retrieve a Laptop which has

been left at home.

Students without their Laptop will complete paper and pen based work in the library not

in their VCE or VCAL class.

This work may not always align with their classes work which will result in them needing to

catch up on their classwork in their own time, the work room or after school in the VCAL

catch up session provided Monday afternoons from 3.30 – 4.30 pm or the VCE study

sessions on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 3.30 – 5.00 pm.

Our Senior Students are young adults. It is our obligation to ensure they are taking

responsibility for their own learning and make sure they have the correct equipment to

engage in their classes – which means having their fully charged Laptop at school every

day.

Thank you for your support with this.

Middle School Textiles students have looked at a range of

manufacturing techniques involved in the manufacture of artificial

flowers. They have then learnt dying, shaping and cutting techniques

to produce their own custom flower suitable for a headpiece.

Flowers made included roses, lilies, orchids and a daffodil. They were

able to use traditional French flower making tools as well as

Japanese Sombana tools. Dyes were hand painted and it took some

control to blend colours that they wanted. Students made their own

stamen using a range of techniques. Overall they have done a very

good job for their first ever efforts in flower making and are now

working on completing an evaluation of their work and work

process. Looking forward to seeing the outcomes in the next task

which will involve some Computer Aided Design work in the style of

designer Bisa Butler.
