Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends, It’s been a busy couple of weeks of learning and teaching at Numurkah Secondary College as we head towards the last weeks of term one. On Tuesday afternoon our Student Performance and Achievement Reports became live for parents to view. These important reports communicate to us how students are travelling in relation to – working and communicating with others, productive use of class time, managing personal learning and their effort and attitude within all subject areas. We look forward to talking to parents more about student progress when we meet for parent teacher interviews in Term Two.
As we head into the final week of our first term it’s important for us to remember that everyday
counts!
Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students
learn new things at school every day. Attending and participating in school will help your child
develop:
important skills and knowledge to help them learn social and emotional skills such as good
communication, resilience and team work.
students who attend school every day and complete year 12 have:
better health
better job opportunities
higher income across their lives.
There is no safe number of days for missing school. Each day a student misses puts them behind.
What to do if your child can’t go to school
Please let the college know as soon as possible and explain why you child can’t come to school.
Please come and talk to us if your child needs to take an extended period of time off, we will
happy to support you to your child from falling behind if they need to miss school.

Tips to help improve your child’s attendance
Talk to your child about school and how important it is.
Encourage your child to take on hobbies that your child enjoys such as sports and clubs. This
will help them develop positive relationships outside of the classrooms.
Have a set time to do homework and go to bed.
Leave all technology out of their bedroom
Encourage students to pack their school bag the night before with everything they need
Have a set time for breakfast
Encourage your child to meet up with a friend so they can travel to school together.
Everyday counts!
We look forward to distributing awards for great attendance this term at next week’s Year Level
Leader Meetings. Thank you for your support to get all of kids to school every day.
Kind regards,
Claire Kelly
Principal

Congratulations to Sis Coles, one of twenty Victorian government school students who received a
Marrung Scholarship to support her education as part of the Marrung Education Scholarship
Awards.
The awards recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander students with high potential to succeed
in their chosen career paths. Selection is also
based on academic results and involvement with
the Koorie community, with recipients decided
by a panel comprising representatives from the
Department and the Victorian Aboriginal
Education Association Incorporated (VAEAI).
Minister for Education James Merlino, together
with Geraldine Atkinson.
Sis was presented with certificates in recognition
of her scholarship at a ceremony in Melbourne
last Tuesday. She believes completing year 12 is
important as it will allow her to get the most out
of her education and give her more opportunities
for a better future VCAL and her engineering VET
studies will help her achieve her career goals. Sis
is interested in engineering and electrical work as
a future career path. Sis is a leader in her classes
and builds strong relationships with her peers. She
consistently demonstrates leadership skills,
digging in and helping others and is a productive
and valuable member of our school.
Congratulations Sis on your achievements and those

Students have commenced SIT20416 Certificate II in Kitchen Operations onsite at Numurkah
Secondary College.
The course is run by hospitality trainer and
former chef Anna Corazza and is auspiced through nationally recognised TAFE provider William Angliss institute of TAFE.
Undertaking this course prepares students with
a range of food preparation and cookery skills to prepare food and menu items. Included units such as; preparing appetisers and salads, preparing stocks, soups and sauces, preparing vegetable, fruit and farinaceous dishes and preparing poultry dishes are just some of the units undertaken over a two year period.
Students will begin hospitality functions in term
2, which will give them experience in preparing, cooking and serving food to clients. This also helps students gain lifelong skills and helps them with obtaining part-time employment whilst doing an apprenticeship or further training.

Recently, students in VCE Psychology attended The
Melbourne Museum and ArtVo to gain a real world
understanding of the theoretical knowledge they are
learning in class. Through the Melbourne Museum
'Labyrinth of the Mind' exhibition's immersive
experiences, artworks, and historical psychiatric
objects, students were encouraged to think about the
workings of their own mind and the minds of
others. At ArtVo, the students were able to analyse
how visual perception principles are used in art.
Some students have shared their reflections with us
below.
On the years 11 and 12 Psychology excursion on the 19th March we adventured to Melbourne. We all woke up really early, we are still recovering. However, Janice pulled through with lots of snacks. We went to the Melbourne Museum for an exhibition on the brain and the mind. It was cool to see a real-life Ames room. It was also really interesting to see where they used to keep people with mental health problems in asylums. Later in the day we went to ArtVo. ArtVo is an optical illusion art gallery where you can interact with the art. It was heaps of fun! Year 11 Class
The dream chairs were a highlight at the Melbourne
Museum due to the immersive experience of high-risk
situations as well as calming influences. This tied in
with our learning about the Sympathetic and
Parasympathetic Nervous Systems. There was also an
old isolation cylinder from a psych ward that was
mind blowing. With the little amount of space inside,
it was hard to imagine a human being forced in there. -

VCE Psychology Excursion cont….. Attending ARTVO was an exciting new way of
learning about the different types of visual
perception principles we have studied in class. The
pieces covering the walls of the gallery seemed like
normal paintings, but through the lens of a camera
is where they came to life. -Jalen Brown
At the Melbourne Museum, we learnt important facts
for our future area of study. This included learning
that our memory can actually be improved, despite
the stereotype that memory naturally decreases with
age. We explored how this can be achieved by playing
the screen memory game which investigates the
value of repetition and how using tricks/mnemonics
can improve our memory. -Tenille Kneebone
River Vearing and Tyson Hill battle the elements to get meals out to the elderly as part of the Meals on Wheels program.
Well done boys!

As part of a new initiative connecting schools to industry, our year 12 VCAL students were invited to visit Cobram Panel Works and Barooga Sports Club. Thank you to Mark who spent his valuable time speaking to students about the many different facets of the automotive industry, the varied jobs available and the changes that have come about due to technology. One of the students, Josh Govers really enjoyed “seeing what goes on behind the scenes and how easily a vehicle would be classified as a right off if the air bags had been deployed”.
Students enjoyed hearing from Anton about his own personal journey from beginning his working life as a Plumber and then deciding on a career change into the Entertainment Industry. Anton began at Barooga Sports Club as a bar man and worked his way up through managing various aspects of the club to CEO at the Barooga Golf Club, acting CEO at the Sports Club. He is now the Chief Operating officer. Students also enjoyed hearing about the history of the club and the affect that Covid had on the business.
Both employers spoke to students about their difficulties in finding employees and encouraged students to look to their businesses for School Based Apprenticeships, Structured Workplace Learning and work experience. They also have full time apprenticeships available.
Back at school I asked students if there were any industries in particular, they would like to visit. Maddy Koo-Aga commented that “it didn’t matter so much about the workplace we visit; it matters about the how enthusiastic the employer is and the opportunities they can offer us”.
Thank you to Mark from Cobram Panel Works and Anton from Barooga Sports Club for inviting our Year 12 students to visit their workplaces and for speaking with such enthusiasm and passion about their businesses.
