U.S. COAST GUARD CONCERT On Wednesday, December 5, 1:00 p.m., SSILL has arranged for the U.S. Coast Guard Woodwind Quintet to perform a concert at the Community Center. The Woodwind Quintet is one of the Coast Guard Band’s most popular & versatile ensembles. They will be performing from the entire spectrum of standard woodwind quintet repertoire from Renaissance works to show tunes, rags & unpublished contemporary works. Space & parking is limited so sign up early for the concert & for a shuttle bus from St. George Church rear parking lot. No charge. ANNUAL CRAFT FAIR On Saturday, October 20th, the Annual Craft Fair was held at the Community Center. The Leete Room was filled with unique hand-made crafts for different seasons & events. The Guilford Room featured our beautiful hand-knit items, gently used jewelry, home-made baked goods, 50/50 and the ever popular Chance Auction with beautiful items donated by local businesses. The Alexander Lounge was filled with used books & movies from different genres. Those in attendance could order breakfast or lunch from Larry’s kitchen. Total revenue generated from pre-sales & the day of the fair, after expenses, was $5,913. What a wonderful job! Thank you to the volunteers who worked all year to create beautiful items to sell, to our Chance Auction Chairperson who solicited beautiful donations, to those who helped with set-up on Friday & who helped the day of the fair performing many important functions to make this a successful event. The proceeds are used to support seniors & community programs. MEALS ON WHEELS 16TH ANNUAL LASAGNA DINNER: The Annual Meals on Wheels Lasagna Dinner to honor our troops & veterans will be held on Friday, November 16th, 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at the Community Center. No one deserves more honor & respect than our nation’s veterans & Joey Vincent honors their achievement & sacrifice with his Salute to Veterans’ Show. He’ll take us on a century-long journey performing the music that has followed our armed forces wherever they’ve served from WW I to the Gulf War. Joey Vincent is a one-man show, blending comedy, impressions, singing, dancing & trumpet playing. You’ll enjoy a family style lunch with breathtaking views of the Easthampton Valley. ABBA became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, topping the charts worldwide from 1974 to 1982. Relive those wonderful years by joining us for a trip to Nelson Hall’s intimate theatre to watch a talented group perform the Songs of ABBA. Osaka Hibachi Buffet is our destination for November. It is an upscale restaurant in Stratford with a reasonably priced all-you-can-eat menu to choose from. Besides Japanese food, the buffet includes Italian, Chinese and American food. Before lunch we will have a guided tour of the P.T. Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, conceived and constructed by the great American showman, P.T. Barnum. The museum has proudly served an international audience since 1893, & is one our country’s great national treasures. The museum offers both strange & educational attractions. Meet at St. George rear lot for a 10:00 a.m. departure & return at approximately 3:30 p.m. $8.00 fee includes museum donation & administration fee.

Wednesday, December 5 Trees of Hope Benefit Display with Lunch at Lenny and Joe’s, New Haven

You will have an opportunity to open up your heart to the children & families who benefit from the Ronald McDonalds Charities & also enjoy the Christmas spirit by joining us for the 28th Annual “Trees Of Hope” event at the Maritime Center in New Haven. The Trees of Hope features more than 100 beautiful adorned trees, elegant wreaths, elaborate table settings & other wonderful holiday displays donated & sponsored by individuals, local businesses & community organizations. Each display is raffled off to a lucky winner for $1.00 per ticket. After enjoying the display & taking some chances, we’ll stop at nearby Lenny & Joe’s for lunch on your own. Cheshire is an area town rich in history and beauty especially at Christmastime. The Cheshire Historical Society, which is housed in the 1785 Hitchcock Phillips House, will provide us with a guided tour to experience what life looked like in the 18th century & learn about the heritage of Cheshire. As an added treat, in December, the local Garden Clubs decorate the home for Christmas. After the tour we’ll continue to be immersed in Cheshire history as we have lunch at the Waverly Inn. Built in 1896, The Inn has been a staple in Cheshire since the 19th century & offers guests a dining experience immersed in rich Connecticut history. Specializing in American fare, the experienced chefs put care and creativity into every dish. You will be offered several options from their lunch menu. Indicate your choice on the registration form. MACKINAC ISLAND TRIP- FOLLOWUP From September 23 to 30, a group of 30 seniors from Guilford &15 from Oxford experienced a magical trip to Mackinac Island in Michigan. The trip included a stop at Niagara Falls, a visit to the Ford Rouge Factory Museum and the Henry Ford Museum, a cruise on the Bavarian Belle Paddlewheel, tour of the German village Frankenmuth, & a horse drawn carriage tour of the Island and lunch at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Many new friendships were made in our time together. Overnight trips are being planned for 2019. See below for for details.

Victorian Cape May – A trip to Victorian Cape May, New Jersey is in the works for the first or second week of June, 2019. This Victorian village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Highlights will include a visit to Historic Smithville with its unique shops, a visit to Physick Estate - Cape May’s only Victorian House Museum, a trolley ride through the historic district, a visit to Cape May Point State Park and the Cape May Point Lighthouse, a boat ride aboard the Cape May Spirit to view dolphins, birds and other wildlife and a visit to the Cape May winery for a tour and tasting. A number of meals will be included. Our favorite Tour Escort, Penny is putting the finishing touches on this trip and promises to have specifics on price and itinerary available for the December newsletter. Please contact the office if you would like additional information and we will forward a detailed flyer and sign-up form as soon as details are finalized.

Inspiring Iceland – Penny from Landmark Tours is also putting the final touches on a trip to Iceland, the land of Geysers, Volcanos and Hot Springs for a date in the fall when we would have a very good chance of seeing the Northern Lights. This will be a fly tour, most likely from Boston to Reykjavic. Highlights will include a Reykjavik City tour which includes a visit to the National Museum of Iceland, an excursion along the south shore to see numerous intriguing natural features of the landscape, a visit to the Golden Circle where you will see many wonderful examples of Iceland’s phenomenal geology including waterfalls and hot springs, and a soak in the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Package includes many meals, entrances, services, guides, taxes and gratuities. Penny promises to have specifics on price and itinerary available for the December newsletter. NEW BUS #453 HAS ARRIVED: On Monday October 22, First Selectman Matt Hoey, Parks and Recreation Commission Chair Rose Dostert, Parks and Recreation Director Rick Maynard, Seniors Coordinator Terry Buckley, Office Assistant/Dispatcher Patti Haggerty and Bus Driver Howard Vaillancourt, accepted delivery of our beautiful new bus. Funding was provided from the State DOT’s Section 5310 program & the Town of Guilford. This new bus is a welcome addition to our transportation program fleet.

INTRODUCTION TO TAI CHI DEMONSTRATION: On Friday, November 16th from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Exercise Room, Dr. Martin Reichgut will present a discussion and demonstration on introduction to Tai Chi, the ancient Chinese martial art used to improve physical well-being, manage stress, and defend against the confrontations of everyday life. If you want to learn more about this popular, healthful, balance- improving exercise, please sign up in the office.

THANKSGIVING LUNCHEON AND MINI FAIR: On Friday November 16th, 11:00 a.m. before and during our traditional Thanksgiving Lunch, we will hold our annual mini-fair and offer a limited number of items from the Annual Craft Fair available for sale at a reduced prices. If you didn’t make it to the fair or need additional items for your holiday list, be sure to stop by the tables and find some beautiful items.

ROTARY CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON: The Annual Rotary Christmas Luncheon will take place on Wednesday, December 12, 12:00 noon. If you arrive early, our own Joyful Voices Chorus will be singing Christmas and holiday songs to get you in the holiday spirit starting at 11:00 a.m. Lunch will follow at noon. Please bring a non-perishable food donation for the local Food Bank. Parking will be limited so consider being picked up at home by the bus or parking in the rear of St. George Church & being shuttled to the Community Center by the bus. Call the office at 203-453-8086 or stop at the main desk to sign up for the lunch and to arrange for a ride. There is no charge, but you must sign-up in the office by Friday, December 7th. Residents & non-residents, who regularly use the programs & services at the Community Center, are invited to attend. Residents can sign-up immediately & non-residents can sign up starting November 12th (contingent upon available space). GROCERY SHOPPING THANKSGIVING WEEK : Grocery shopping for Thanksgiving week will be on Wednesday, November 21st. 9:00 -11:00. Please call the office to put your name on the shopping list. The office will be closed on Thursday, November 22nd & Friday, 23rd.

FREE WEEKLY MOVIE: Guilford Seniors and SSILL invite you to attend a weekly movie series on Thursdays at 1:00 in the Faulkner Room at the Community Center. The November schedule includes: November 1– Ghost Busters , November 8 Back to the Future, November 15 – The Princess Bride . Head upstairs and enjoy the fun.

JOYFUL VOICES: Like to sing ? Our chorus director Pat Todd, an accomplished musician, does a wonderful job with our chorus & they are looking for new members. Have fun learning new songs, practicing & performing at various community events. Join in time to practice & participate in the chorus’ performance before the Rotary Lunch on December 12th. SNOW BIRDS: Please remember to notify the office if you receive our newsletter by mail and will be away for the winter. We get charged for each returned newsletter, so if you will not be at home this winter, please let us know.

INCLEMENT WEATHER: As we get closer to the winter months and possible inclement weather, please remember that when Guilford Public Schools are closed, the Parks and Recreation programs, including lunch, are cancelled and our buses do not run. If there is a school delay, our programs and bus service go on as scheduled.

Miscellaneous Information

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS LUNCH: Friday, December 14, 12:00 noon, we’ll have our annual special Christmas Lunch with a menu of Larry’s Famous Pot Roast, potatoes, vegetable and a delicious dessert. Entertainment will be provided by the very talented, local artists “The VonZells”. These incredibly entertaining musicians will take you down a walk on memory lane as they serve up oldies mixed with some classic Christmas music. There might also be some surprise entertainment! $6.00. Tickets must be purchased in advance in the office. Limited space, so sign up early.
