Over the years I have realized that one of the secrets to success and happiness is gratitude. And I also know it’s not always easy to be grateful. Life happens, and sometimes we are knocked flat by situations completely beyond our control. Tragic world events, outbreaks of dangerous viruses, economic upheavals and uncertainties, and crises and frustrations that affect us on a personal level can make any of us feel down and, at times, full of despair.

As many of you celebrate Thanksgiving this month during a holiday that asks you to express your thanks, I ask that you take just a few moments to reflect on everything for which you can be grateful. For example, consider these scenarios:

Yes, the car is giving you fits again but you have a car and can afford the gasoline it takes to get you places. Or … You sprained your ankle playing hide and seek with the children. But it will heal, you can walk and run, and your children are happy and healthy.

Right now, while it is fresh in your mind, I want you to make a list of at least 10 things for which you are grateful. Next, I want you to pledge to adopt an “attitude of gratitude” every day this month. Trust me, I’m going to be doing it too since I’m not immune to feeling overwhelmed at times.

I hope you will find that feeling and expressing gratitude for all the good things you have in your life will help you cope with times of despair and frustration. I have found that a little tender inner reflection can work wonders when it comes to getting through the tough moments.

As you celebrate the holiday this month with your friends and family members, I hope you will clasp each person’s hand a little tighter than usual and take the time to reflect on how they have benefited your life and commit to making an attitude of gratitude something you practice every day. It’s the best way I know to make the world a better place.
