MORGAN BOOK WINS AWARD The Association for the Study of Connecticut History (ASCH) awarded the 2015 Betty M. Linsley Award to Mystic Seaport for the book, The Charles W. Morgan: A Picture History of an American Icon. The Award recognizes the best work on a significant aspect of Connecticut’s history published by, for, or on behalf of a Connecticut historical society or organization. It was presented to the Museum last Saturday at ASCH's annual fall conference at Central Connecticut State University. Peter Hinks, the ASCH awards committee chairperson, said in his presentation speech, “This volume vibrantly chronicles how Mystic Seaport with numerous collaborators led one of the most important recent maritime restorations in New England—the refurbishing of the Charles W. Morgan, the only remaining wooden whaling vessel from the 19 century. The compendium of pictures alone are extraordinary: they visually capture the past world of whaling—its ships, ports, mariners, labor regimen, and tools and artifacts—with stunning scope, always careful to situate the Morgan specifically within it all… The volume is a marvelous celebration of the Morgan and all it represents—the dramatic past of whaling, the floating factories that made its greatest days possible, and all the men and women over the decades who contributed to preserving and sailing this precious mobile monument.” We are grateful for the honor and thank ASCH for recognizing the book in this manner. MORGAN BOOK WINS AWARD

The Association for the Study of Connecticut History (ASCH) awarded the 2015 Betty M. HALLOWEEN AT MYSTIC SEAPORT

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped to celebrate Halloween here at Mystic Seaport. The community engagement was incredible with 570 kids and 731 adults passing through the Gate, a figure which doubled our 2014 event. Citizens Bank was well represented handing out Trick or Treat bags and glow sticks to all.

Mystic Seaport Volunteers included Jan Kepner, Dave Olsson, Ian Jarvis, Lou Esposito, Dave Carpenter, Sam Graley and David LaRizzo. Also on hand to assist were students from Williams-Mystic; Maya Gillett, Barrett Pritchard, Aislyne Calianos, Lindsey Precht, Sarah Way, Claire Fahrner, Anayis Wright, Meg Ficarra and Katie Swoap and UCONN/Avery Point students; Jennifer Miao and Leonardo Mezzomo. Thanks for all you did to make this event so successful. - Mary Cairns

Williams-Mystic's Thanksgiving Turkey Drive To benefit the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center

"Please join Williams-Mystic in our effort to donate turkeys to a local food pantry this Thanksgiving! The Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center is distributing 500 Thanksgiving packages to families in need throughout the Westerly/Pawcatuck area. They still need about 200 more small turkeys. To assist with this effort, Williams-Mystic is hoping to donate 20 turkeys to the PNC by November 18th. We're accepting both cash (based on our research, $15 will buy a small turkey) and actual frozen turkey donations. If you are interested in helping us reach this goal or have any further questions, please contact Hannah Whalen ([email protected]) or Mauro Diaz-Hernandez ([email protected]) by Tuesday, November 18th." Thanks so much, Hannah Whalen

L A DUNTON UPDATE Shipyard has begun work on replacing LA DUNTON’s rig in anticipation of re-stepping her lower masts next spring. We’ve displayed DUNTON without her topmasts for the last several years knowing there was some weakness in her main mast top. Last fall in anticipation of her haul out we removed her lowers masts to discover her main top was so deteriorated we could not re-step her masts without replacing her main all together. Further the Sampson post into which her bowsprit is mortised was also found to be rotten; fortunately deterioration had not spread to the bowsprit itself. This will also need replacement before her rig can go back in. After reviewing various partial rig scenarios we reluctantly decided, to the disappointment of many, to exhibit her without a rig until resources were available to correct these deficiencies. The new main will be somewhat different from the one we took out. It will be a little longer with slightly different mast head detail. This is the result of research done in the mid-80s. At that time extensive notes accumulated by Edward S. Bosley, researcher and correspondent of HI Chappelle during last days of fishing schooners, became available through the Essex Shipbuilding Museum, in Essex MA. This research gave details unavailable to the Museum in earlier DUNTON rig restorations. Subsequently new lower masts were ordered to these new specifications. The masts were stored, until last week, under the lean-to shelter alongside the Catboat Exhibit. The main is now alongside the bulkhead near the Sanger VRC waiting for work to begin. It’s a beautiful piece of Douglas fir 90 feet long and 19 inches in diameter. DUNTON is also in need of new topmasts. Fabrication and re-rigging her topmasts will follow next year as time and resources are available. This work is being made possible through the generous support of several donors with a special interest in the L A DUNTON. It’s been more than 30 years since L A DUNTON received any major work and before long will need a major restoration on the level of our recent CHARLES W. MORGAN Project. In the meantime we will continue to monitor her condition and improve her according to priorities as they arise. -Quentin Snediker

THANK YOU TO VOLUNTEER BOB ANDRLE!

The Education Department would like to extend a huge thank you to volunteer Bob Andryle, for the amazing work he did on a model that was formerly in the exhibit “Frozen In.” The model was in rough shape after the exhibit (separated from its base), but used for various primary source workshop programs, as a secondary source study object. Bob was able to make repairs to the model, re-do the snow, update the igloos, and re-establish the characters into the scene. He also built the model onto a tray-like base so that it can be easily transported by our Museum Teachers. We are so thrilled to have this updated model in our Education Collection! Thank you so much for working on the improvements, Bob! (See before and after photos below.) -Krystal Rose

MUSEUM PHOTOGRAPHER & DIGITAL IMAGING SPECIALIST We are pleased to announce that Joe Michael has joined the CRC Production Team as Museum Photographer and Digital Imaging Specialist. Joe, formerly of our Facilities Department, started in his new position during Pilots weekend. Joe’s amazing portfolio, computer skills, along with his knowledge of our campus earned him the position. Joe has been covering some of the GluLam construction and just shot Trick or Treaters this past Saturday. If you see Joe on the grounds, say “Hello” to our new Production Team member. -Mary Anne Stets and Suki Williams

WELCOME TO NEW DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP AND VOLUNTEER SERVICES Please join the Advancement Department in welcoming Autumn Payne as Mystic Seaport’s new Director of Membership and Volunteer Services. Autumn began her role at the Museum on November 2nd and is settling in quickly thanks to the generosity of time her new colleagues, staff and volunteers have allotted to her on-boarding! For the past 10 years Autumn has worked at Macauly Honors College of City University of New York in Manhattan, most recently serving as their Director of Annual Fund and Special Events. Prior to joining CUNY, from 1999 to 2005 Autumn held a broad range of museum positions from membership programs to collections to education at the Brooklyn Museum, American Museum of Natural History, New York Hall of Science in Flushing, NY and Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. Autumn’s connection to Maritime heritage was forged through a long family history of service in the United States Navy.
