How does our faith intersect with the rest of our lives, and how does our church play a role in our community? How is God calling each one of us to step out in faith and be a leader and ambassador for Jesus, our Christ? What is God even up to in our community? Christian leadership is a tricky thing, because it always involves risk—especially at the local level. It means risking what others may think or say about you. It means prioritizing, and truly embracing Jesus and the gospel message over and above anything and anyone else. It means sacrifice. In Scripture, Jesus says that “anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 10:38-39 NIV). This notion of loss of life can be scary, unless we wholly trust in the Lord and believe, as the catechism proclaims: in life and in death we belong to our faithful savior Jesus Christ (see #1 of the Heidelberg Catechism). I would like to invite everyone to a leader’s retreat on Sunday, November 14, at Zion. This free leaders retreat is open to our church, but it is specifically for those who are currently in leadership positions and those who might consider being in a leadership position in the future. All church officers are encouraged to attend. We have a number of things that will be happening at that retreat. We will spend time in scripture and join in prayer. We will look at where our church has been, where it is currently, and where God might be preparing us to go in the future. We will be looking at some of the models that we are studying in my doctoral program (studies in Missional Leadership) at Fuller Seminary. The “right” Rev. Dr. Scott Kilgore, a good friend and colleague of mine from Missouri, will be joining us and will lead a session on spiritual disciplines and discernment, and share about his experiences of community at Wyatt Park Christian Church in St. Joseph. Please mark your calendars now for this event. RSVP info will be coming soon. May God continue to allow us all to continue on, growing and going in Jesus’ name. The ChimesPASTOR’S POINT

What does it mean to be a Christian leader?

PRISCILLA CIRCLE Priscilla Circle’s October meeting was opened with a prayer by President, Chelle Cooper.

Minutes were read and approved.

Roll Call was “What are your Thanksgiving Plans?”

Mission Coordinator, Jnelle Keysor called on Cynthia Schmidt to report on her findings on the EBOLA crisis.  A motion was made to send $150 to ELWA a Christian organization with a hospital in Liberia, Africa devoted to combating EBOLA through treatment and education.

Our second project for October will be to send $200 to Shannon Smith for her Christian mission work.

Our third project will be to hold a “Potato Bar” lunch with the proceeds going to Pastor Adam to be used for his continuing education.

Another project for consideration is a Chinese gentleman transitioning from an apartment into his first home and who is in need of household items.  This was tabled until next month.  However, if anyone has items he might be able to use please contact Pat Hopes.  He is in need of all household items and furniture including: beds, couch, chairs, linens, etc.

Our Treasurer, Susan Maguire reported that we had a beginning balance of $1041.78.

For devotions Melissa England presented a short video on 1 Corinthians: Chapter 12.  As the body is not one part but many, we are all part of the Body of God.

OLD BUSINESS:

A big thanks to all the ladies who furnished desserts for the Mission Board’s luncheon served to benefit the Open Door Mission.

DORCAS AIDThe Dorcas Aid met with a dessert luncheon at 1:00 on Thursday, October 9th. Marilyn Lang was our hostess and she served a delicious piece of orange pie. There was a pretty and original centerpiece with different fall items. So pretty!

Elaine played the piano as we sang “We Gather Together”. Great song! Charlene had devotions about the beautiful colors of Fall; with red as passion for Christ; orange, reflects warmth; yellow, joy and happiness; purple, color of royalty; brown, anchors stability.

Pastor Adam led our Bible Study on; “Refreshed in Him”. Let me have joy from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in the Lord. Philemon 1:20. We need to use our gifts to serve others bringing glory to God. The foundation of edification is love. Edification is teaching with open eyes being positive and to understand truth and reality. God Will Refresh Us if We But Let Him!

Mardene read the thought and Bible verse for the day. Roll call was answered with a verse from Deuteronomy by eleven members and Pastor Adam.

The secretary and treasurers’ reports were read.We served the luncheon after the funeral of Elise Taylor on September. Mardene read a “Thank You” note from the family.

We received a new coffee pot since the other one didn’t work even though it was new. Marilyn (and Jordan) contacted the company and after much work they sent a new one. Marilyn had to pay postage, so Lois made a motion to pay her for the postage with a second by Virginia. We discussed giving money to the food pantry for turkeys for Thanksgiving. We will decide next month.

Charlene, Audrey, Mardene and Eunice will play Bingo this month at Oakland.Charlene made a motion to adjourn with a second by Eunice. We closed with the Lord’s prayer.

YOUTH REPORTThe high school Sunday School class has been meeting each week at 9am. We have been discussing a different hero of the Bible each week.

We have talked about Abraham, Moses, Noah, Joseph, and Abel so far. We decode the message and then have a “Battle Plan” that we will implement and take with us as we live our everyday lives. The “Battle Plan” has three challenges that they are to work on throughout the week.

MIDDLE MINISTRIESMiddle Ministries has been meeting on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. They have been using movies to help teach on different topics. For the month of November, they will be meeting on November 12th to discuss “Courage” and then on Tuesday, November 25th to discuss “Thankfulness”. Middle Ministries is for youth in grades 5-7 and it starts at 5:30pm.

J-FORCEGalatians 5:22-23  "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."

The J-Force continues to study the fruit of the Spirit.  In October, we looked at the fruit of the Spirit "patience" and spent a couple of our meetings having some fall fun!

Looking ahead to November and December, there are several early dismissal and no school days.  Just a reminder that J-Force does NOT meet on early dismissal and no school days.  Please note the November and December schedules below.

Also, the J-Force will be holding their annual Grandparent Christmas parties on December 3 & 17 this year.  Grandparents--please be watching for an invitation from your J-Force student soon!

It's never too late to join J-Force, so please invite students in kindergarten through fifth grade to join us on Wednesdays after school until 5:00!

SCRIP UPDATE

So far in 2014, SCRIP has raised $2,710.96. Zion’s elementary, middle, and youth ministry programs are solely funded by the SCRIP program. Thanks again to everyone who has been faithfully ordering SCRIP each month.  SCRIP orders can be placed anytime.  All the orders will be collected and sent in (typically) after the first Sunday of each month.

As the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons quickly approach, don’t forget to buy your groceries with SCRIP, as well as any gift purchases that you will make. A little bit of time planning ahead can make a huge impact on the programs and ministries right here at Zion. As always, if you have a major home project that you will be doing, consider using SCRIP to pay for your purchase. As always, thanks for continuing to support Zion’s youth.

The 2014-2015 Confirmation Year is well underway. You will see the five confirmation students working hard on Sunday mornings during Sunday School and Worship, as well as each Wednesday evening. The Confirmation Class meets Wednesday evenings from 5:30pm-6:40pm and Sunday mornings from 9am-9:45am. Please keep the entire class and confirmation process in your prayers.
