Consecration Sunday Is Coming Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their churchs mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes. Our congregations stewardship committee has selected the New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving in our stewardship education emphasis this year. New Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues, we will treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, we are asking our attendees and members to make their financial commitments to our churchs missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in this community and around the world. Every attendee and member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending morning worship on Consecration Sunday. We urge people to attend who feel strongly opposed to completing a card. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card. We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning worship our guest leader will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship. We will encourage participation in Consecration Sunday events through the Consecration Sunday team and Session members. Since we will make no follow- up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday worship. Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events. Clerk of Session, Arland Smith Pastor, Greg Glover November 2017

Consecration Sunday Is Coming

Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues, we will treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?” During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, we are asking our attendees and members to make their financial commitments to our church’s missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in this community and around the world. The Legacy Gift of Frances Bardwell Powers

We give thanks to God for the generous bequest of $20,000 to the First Presbyterian Church Endowment from the estate of Frances Bardwell Powers. With the addition of Mrs. Powers’ gift, the value of the FPC and George Gracey Endowments stand together at $500,000. These Endowments will begin to contribute to the ongoing work of FPC with the first disbursement of earnings in 2018. We look forward to placing the bronze name plate for Frances Powers alongside that of Anna Kathryn Atkinson on the plaque in the narthex: “In Gratitude to those who loved the Church and have provided for the extension of God’s kingdom in their wills.” The vast majority of legacy gifts are the sort that Mrs. Powers gave. They are not fancy annuities and other financial arrangements requiring a professional financial manager; they are simple, old-fashioned gifts made through Wills, simply listing the name of the church and our address and the nature of the gift. Want to make a lasting contribution to the church that grows the Endowment and increases our ability to do mission and service every year? Consider leaving a legacy gift. Working through your attorney in concert with a financial manager is always a wise way to close any gaps that might delay your wishes. Want to know more? Contact James Eldon Thomas or Ann Waddle or another member of our Investment Advisory Committee and watch for a workshop on this and other topics from our Missions Committee next year.

Every woman attending FPC is auto-matically a member of PW and is wel-come to attend all functions. Guests

are also welcome. PW meets through the year, for programs, services, and

fellowship. August and April are dinner meetings and the remainder are 12:30 luncheons, held on the 4th Monday of the month. There will be luncheons in December and February. Meals are catered ($11.00) and sign-ups are in

Sunday’s bulletin, on the bulletin board or through the church office.

Presbyterian Women November Update It is that time of year again! Time to think about the holidays, and the PW are ready to help. FUEL is a program that sends food home with children on the weekend, to help families that may not have enough to eat. The PW in our church send 30 children home each week with a bag of snacks. School is back in session so to help us, you could sponsor a child! $20 per week or $200 for the school year would cover a child. This is tax deductible--please make your check out to FPC and on the memo line, please write FUEL. For questions about this program, or other ways to help, contact Jeanne Bettencourt. Our next luncheon is December 4, at 12:30 (no program in November). We will have a program from the Clarksville High School Choir. There will be great music, good food for the body and spirit! Please join us if you can. Cost is $11, and please sign up in advance. Have a blessed and thankful month of November. Marcia Williams PW Moderator

LOUISIANA SATURDAY NITE

ROOM in the INN

After meeting at the Old Firehouse Day Shelter with area churches concerning the Winter Shelter Program, we have realized that there are several other churches providing shelter on Fridays and no churches on Wednesdays. Therefore, we are going to change back to Wednesdays during the months of November through March. Fewer churches are par-ticipating in the Room In The Inn (RITI) program, thus there is a need to offer shelter for men and women each Wednesday. We will make a new sign up sheet with new dates. Please contact either Margaret Adames 980-1646 or Eric Salyer 624-9104 if you are interested in serving a meal or staying over-night as an inn keeper.

November is a month of Giving. The youth will be focusing on being thankful and how we can give to others. Children attending Children’s Church will be discussing this topic and using the book “Three Cups” as a guide; teaching children to understand the value of money by learning to save, spend, and give. Each family will receive a copy of the book to keep and read as a family. The month of November will also be spent preparing for the Advent season. We will work with music and stories that teach the purpose of the Christmas message. A Christmas Pageant will take place in December. Details will be posted in the bulletin and on Facebook. May you all enjoy a happy and joyous Thanksgiving! Dianne York
