Habitat for Humanity Craft Show

Page 2

It’s almost here and we could use your help!

1Habitat for Humanity Craft ShowSaturday, November 4th

9:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M.Crafts, Raffle, Bake Sale, and Soup &

Sandwich lunchFree Admission

All proceeds will benefit the Habitat for Humanity – New Hope Partnership.

Hundreds of people will be coming to CTL for our annual Habitat for Humanity Craft Show. There is a lot to do and we

could use allot of help!

During the show, we have 25 – 2-hour slots available to fill.

Sign-up sheets will be posted in the entryway in October for:

Working at the Craft Show for a 2-hour shift, helping prior to the show getting the church ready, cleaning up, and more.

Donating baked goods for the bake sale or drinks for the CTL Café.

We will also have invitations and flyers available for you to take to give to your family, friends, and co-workers.

Thank you for your support! For more information or questions, contact Carol E at 847-695-0833.

Volunteer Help Wanted (on the technical side of things at CTL).

Do you have some specialized skills CTL needs? You can make an important contribution to the life of the church by volunteering your time and abilities. Right now, we’re looking for folks to take on these responsibilities as part of a team.

Sunday Morning Sound Board Technician If you have ever run a sound system – or wanted to learn how – here is your chance! This ministry lets everyone hear what is going on in worship! You will be responsible for the microphones and sound levels during the service. We would like to add more people to this team so the time commitment is less of a burden on everyone.

Worship Service Projection This team uses PowerPoint to project what the congregation needs to participate in the worship service, and creates graphic design to increase the visual appeal. The team also incorporates artwork and video that helps communicate the message. We would like to add more people to this team so the time commitment is less of a burden on everyone.

Let the church office or the congregation council know if you’re interested in volunteering, or hearing more about any of these ministries. The first of these is accountable to the E-team. The other is accountable to Worship, Music and the Arts.

*FROM OUR LEADERSHIP*

From Pastor TolzmannThe Last ESP (Extended Supply Pastor) Report

It has been an honor for five months to serve the people of God, known as Christ the Lord Lutheran. What a joy it was Reformation Sunday with a full sanctuary and now I look to All Saints Sunday, with dedications of a new banner and new entrance doors. What a way to “go out!” Now we have the ministry of welcome to offer Pastor Phil and his family. I am excited for us and I am excited for him as we serve side by side to the glory of God. After 26 months without full time pastoral leadership, I am ready for Pastor Phil to stir us up with the Holy Spirit and send us out as an inviting people. Changes will come here, because God loves us too much to leave us the way we are. Please join Jeanne and me as we continue to pray for our new Pastor every day, because he will need it and so will we.

During this time until Pr. Trzynka arrives, we have arranged for a supply pastor to be available each Sunday morning for Word and Sacrament. Yet, you may be in need of pastoral care at other times. If you have a special need for a pastor, please contact one of our sister ELCA churches in Elgin:

Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 847-741-8434 (Pastor Carol Book),

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 847-742-2025 (Pastor Jeff Mikyska),

Zion Lutheran Church, 847-888-2882 (Pastor David Daubert)

PrayPlease pray for the people who have been affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and others. May God’s healing presence give them peace and hope in their time of need.

Gifts to Lutheran Disaster Response, designated for “Hurricane Response – United States” will be used entirely (100 percent) for these disasters until the response is complete. Together, we can help provide immediate and long-lasting support. Give today to support the needs in this response and others like it.

ELCA Presiding Bishop Eaton's Article in the October Living LutheranOctober 32 and beyond. With the 500th anniversary, it has been “All Reformation All the Time.” However, Reformation Day is over—now what? In her October column for Living Lutheran, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton reminds us that in Christ we are set free for loving and serving others—so let us now live in that freedom. Read her full article Here.

*GET INVOLVED*

Welcome lunchWelcome Pr. Phil Trzynka and family! Come to a potluck

lunch following worship on Sun., Nov. 12. Sign up on the bulletin board to let us know what you will be sharing; main dish, salad or side dish, dessert. This will be a great opportunity to meet our new pastor, share a delicious meal and enjoy conversation with congregation members.

St. John's BibleIn celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation,

four Elgin congregations have joined forces to bring several volumes of the Heritage Edition of St. John’s Bible to Elgin. You will be hearing about and seeing the beautifully reproduced Bible at these churches, and at the Gail Borden Library, October through December. The name St. John's Bible's comes from St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. This institution has taken prime responsibility, with calligrapher Donald Jackson the initiator of the project, to raise the funds and plan for the reproduction of this work. This is the first handwritten and illustrated Bible since Gutenberg's printing press. Before the printing press, monks in the scriptoria of monasteries wrote and illustrated manuscripts used. For more information about this Bible, you can use Wikipedia.

You will be seeing screen shots of the Bible's magnificent illustrations in the CTL worship space and a volume of St. John's Bible will be available on selected Sundays at CTL. The congregations sharing this Bible are Zion Lutheran Church, St. Mary's Catholic Church, and Congregation Kneseth Israel. The Bible will be out of the library display case for closer viewing in the afternoon on Sun., Nov. 19.

Watch for more information and dates about this beautiful Bible. – Carol B

If you have information (events, photos) that you think the public needs to know, Carol can be contacted so that it can be put on our page and then shared in the group. The email address to contact Carol is [email protected]. If you want to share anything with just the group, go ahead and post it in the group. For example, you might have a question or just want to express an idea. Questions? Contact Carol, or Peggy (CTL Office) at 847-741-8141, email: [email protected]

Bound and UngaggedWe are reading "The Book That Matters Most" by Ann

Hood for our Sat., Nov. 11 meeting. Please note the date change due to the craft fair. For our Sat., Dec. 2 meeting we are reading "Lowcountry Christmas" by Mary Alice Monroe. For our Sat., Jan. 6 meeting please read a book of your choice and tell why you liked or disliked the book. Also for our Jan 6 meeting, we will be picking out the books for the new year. If you should have any questions or would like to suggest a book that you think the book club would enjoy reading and discussing please contact Carol H.

Kids Hope articleKids Hope USA is alive, well, and expanding at CTL. Six

mentors have been working with children this school year. Two more will meet their children on Wed., Nov. 1. The paperwork involved sometimes hampers our involvement since we have to

Page 13

have permission forms signed by parents before we can work with their children. Whether you are a "prayer partner" or not, please pray for this important ministry. The children we work with are all at risk in one manner or another. They all benefit from the time they spend with their mentors. For some of them, the uninterrupted, focused time they spend with their mentors is the only one to one time they spend with adults.

One of our loyal mentors recently shared with me that we need to convey the fact that the mentors get SO MUCH out of the relationships. We go in thinking it is all about giving to these kids. What we do not always realize is how much we get out of it. I'm quite certain that all of the mentors would agree!

If you are curious about this outreach ministry at CTL, contact Jeanne T (director) or ask any of the mentors (Tom J, Henrietta N, Karin K, Ann K, Jacki B). Wait a few weeks and then ask Jane T or Barb B. If you do not feel you can contribute by being a mentor, consider being a prayer partner. If that commitment does not work for you, just pray for the kids and the mentors when you happen to think of it. Prayers work!

Intergenerational EventSun., Nov. 5 at 10:45, children, families and all interested

parties will gather to learn more about the St. John's Bible that has been used at CTL and can be seen at Gail Borden Library. Carol B, who is CTL's representative for this Bible project, will give a brief talk about the Bible - its history, how it was created, where it is kept and how it is used. There will be snacks, maybe a game and a craft project. Please come! All are welcome!

September we disbursed Pastor Phil’s moving expenses to him, which was in the budget approved by the congregation last January. We are so blessed to have Pr. Arlyn Tolzmann leading us in worship during this extended supply period between Pr. Rothaar and Pastor Phil. Pastor Phil will be joining us on November 6th. I hope that we will continue our positive trends well into the future! We are very blessed, as a congregation, with many eager volunteers who continue to do God’s Work with Our Hands!

As has been written before, the above gifts given and gifts expected information does not include the AIM Appeal. We have received $37,082.51 as of September 30th! Thank you so much for your response to this important fund! In September, we have even disbursed funds out of this account for the concrete work in the amount of $3,000.00!

Thank you so very much for your continued financial support of CTL!

Social Ministry NewsThanksgiving Food Baskets: Before the Thanksgiving

holiday, CTL gathers baskets of nonperishable food to be delivered to needy families in the U-46 school area. The school social workers who oversee the education of homeless students select the recipient families. Sign-up for food donations will begin Sun., Oct. 22. Donations may be brought to CTL any time after that date and until the deadline Sun., Nov.12

Mitten Tree: A tree will be set up in the narthex early in November to collect mittens, gloves, and scarves for people who do not have them. Donations are needed for people of all ages.

Page 15

These items are then distributed regularly to schools, the Crisis Center, PADS, and food pantries. The tree will be available for donations from November through January.

White Gifts: The providing of White Gifts at Christmas is a long held tradition at CTL. Their social workers, because of family needs, select children in the U-46 school district. The children are interviewed and a list of three wishes is prepared for each child. We choose a child, buy a gift from the list ($30 limit per child), wrap the gift in white paper, and bring the gift to CTL to be delivered to the child. White Gift sign-ups will begin on Sun., Nov. 19. All gifts need to be at CTL by Sun., Dec. 10.

Some Quick Disability FactsQuote: "People with disabilities are the largest minority group, the only one any person can join at any time."

Disability is a subject you may read about online, or in a newspaper, but not think of as something that might actually happen to you. Yet, your chances of becoming disabled are greater than you realize. Today more people live with a disability than ever before due to our aging societies as well as improved medical treatments helping manage long-term health problems. Some people are born with a disability, others become disabled because of an illness or injury, and some people develop them as they age. At some point in our lives, almost all of us will have some type of disability.

About 1 in 5 people in America currently has a disability. 33% of 20-year-old workers will become disabled before

reaching retirement age. Over a billion people, around 15% of the world's

population, have some form of disability. Between 110 million and 190 million adults worldwide have

significant difficulties in functioning. Rates of disability are increasing due to population aging

and increases in chronic health conditions. One of the key challenges for a person with a disability is to be seen by the public, to be portrayed in media outlets, and treated by health care professionals, as an individual with their own abilities, not just stereotyped as a "disabled person".

There was an amazing array of delicious cookies at the “No Cookie Left Behind” bake sale! A big thank you goes out to all the people who baked these cookies. Thanks, also, to all the people who bought cookies and donated so generously to CROP. Because of you, CTL was able to donate over $750 to CROP this year. Some of these funds will go to local food pantries and the remainder to places in our country and in the world that have experienced disasters and/or are in need of food and water. Thanks to Debbie McG and Chris W for heading up the bake sale. There were a few cookies left behind. These cookies will be sold at the Craft Show to benefit Habitat for Humanity. In addition, some people from CTL walked in the CROP Hunger Walk. A local restaurant donated for each walker. Therefore, whether you donated at church or walked, you were helping feed the hungry!

CTL hosted Soup Kettle on Sept. 29. Dorothy G was our cook. She prepared a meal of comfort food for our 62 guests. The meal was sloppy Joes, macaroni and cheese, vegetables, salad, ice cream and cookies. Sharon and Eric L baked the chocolate chip cookies. Needless to say, there were requests for seconds and thirds! Dorothy was assisted by Peggy L, Jan E, Ken G, John M, Sharon and Eric L, Karen C, Marcy and Howard W, Carol and Rick E, Lowell B, and Barb B. Those of us in the kitchen were surprised during the dinner when a loud bang was heard from the dining room. The drink table had fallen--lemonade, milk, a big coffee pot, and more were all on the floor. John mopped the resulting puddle and Lowell soon had the drink table back in business. Barb made more lemonade. After that, all went well! Thanks to all of you for being part of this very important ministry. We could not have done it without all your helping hands. Our next Soup Kettle date is Fri., Dec. 29.
