DATA EXCHANGE- STNADARDS

• Automatic exchange of data sets amongst different

systems necessitating defining and using

standards. Standards are the crux of the NSDI.

• It is necessary to standardize data exchange

formats, networks, communication equipment, and

software interfaces, etc.

• There is a need to standardize the content of the

NSDI nodes, database design and creation

processes, network protocols, and exchange/

transfer of spatial data sets.

NSDINSDI--1010

Page 30: NSDI-10NSDI Facilitates • To reduce the difficulties in accessing datasets (metadata at all levels) • Helps to develop the datasets with uniform projections and scales • Improve

Purpose of the Data Content Document

It contains the proposal of "Data Specifications" for description and scope

of spatial data themes.

•To provide common definitions for geo-spatial information found in public

records, which will facilitate the effective use, understanding, and

automation of business processes.

•To standardize attributes, which will enhance data sharing.

•To resolve discrepancies related to the use of homonyms and synonyms

in the datasets of various organizations/agencies, which will minimize

duplication within and among them.

•To provide guidance and direction for geo-spatial professionals on

standardized attributes and definitions to improve the standards in data

creation and management.

•To use participatory involvement in the standard development to reach

out to various organizations to encourage application of the standards.

THE NSDI STANDARD

• Under NSDI framework major efforts are on in

standardizing data content and schemas, designing and

processing, network protocols, exchange and transfer data.

• The standardization will enable “user transparency” to

information access.

• The NSDI standard would have to be developed and should

cover:

• Content standardization

• Design and process standardization

• Network protocols standards

• Exchange and transfer standard

• NSDI Quality standards

Scope of Data Standard Document

This deliverable identifies definitions and scope of spatial data

themes. For each spatial data themes, the document provides:

•Definition – brief explanation

•Description – explains the spatial data theme in more detail

•Scope, Use examples - Provide prominent use examples, which

are in compliance to National policies.

•Important feature types and attributes – this is a non-exhaustive

list of the most prominent feature types and attributes.

•Overlaps and links with other themes - known overlap with

and/or dependencies from other spatial data themes.

Metadata: One of three

components of geospatial data

• Where: spatial - location

and relationships

(coordinates, topology)

• What: attributes -

descriptive info about

geographic features in

database

• metadata: description of

geospatial data is

incomplete without it!

THE NSDI METADATA

Metadata helps people who use geospatial data find the data

they need and determine how best to use it.

The Major elements of Metadata:

• Identification information

• Data quality information

• Spatial reference information

• Entity and attribute information

• Distribution information

• Metadata reference information

NSDI SERVERS ARCHITECTURE

The NSDI have network of Servers to enable the successful

performance of NSDI goals and objectives.

•NSDI Web-Server: The NSDI Web-Server would be the front-end

interface to NSDI. The Web-Server would provide the open access

to NSDI information and ‘secure’ entry to NSDI Metadata and

NSDIAgency Servers.

•NSDI Metadata Server: The NSDI Metadata Server would maintain

the NSDI metadata content. At a higher level, it would be linked to

NSDI Web-Server and lower-level it would be linked through NSDI

Server Catalogue to NSDIAgency Servers.

•NSDIAgency Server: The NSDIAgency Server (or Servers) would

hold the actual spatial data of the NSDIAgency.
