TASK2- Nutrition in Plants1° ESO Biology

UNIT 9: PLANT KINGDOM

Plants are autotrophs

● Plants are autotrophs, which means they make their own food.○ They produce organic substances from inorganic substances.

● Nutrition in plants involves multiple processes:1. Absorption of water and mineral salts

2. Transport and distribution of liquids

3. Photosynthesis

4. Cellular respiration

5. Gas exchange

Card A

Absorption

● Water and mineral salts are taken in from the soil through the roots of the

plant.○ The mixture of water + mineral salts is called raw sap.

Card B

Water

Raw sap = salts + water

Water

Raw sap = salts + water

Transport of liquids

● Raw sap is the water and minerals absorbed by

the roots. It travels up from the roots the plant

to the leaves.

● Elaborated sap is the food produced by the

plant. It moves down from the leaves to other

parts of the plant.

Card C

Raw sap = salts + waterElaborated sap: food + water

Photosynthesis

● Green plants use the energy from sunlight,

water and carbon dioxide to make their own

organic matter (food).○ This process is called photosynthesis. It takes place

in leaves mainly.

● Photosynthesis takes place in chloroplasts.

These chloroplasts absorb energy from

sunlight.

Cellular Respiration

● This process is performed

by plants and animals to

make energy.

● The process happens in the

mitochondria in plant cells.

Gas Exchange

● Gases enter and come out from the plant through stomata.

● The stomatas are holes in the leaves and work like doors that open and

close.

● Oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapour come in or come out through

the stomata.

VOCABULARY ENGLISH= SPANISH

1. Absorption = Absorción

2. Photosynthesis = Fotosíntesis

3. Cellular respiration = Respiración celular

4. Gas exchange = Intercambio de gas

5. Stomata = Estoma

6. Raw sap = Savia bruta

7. Elaborated sap = Savia elaborada
