We made good progress in 2013 in all areas with regard to both the ‘software’ and the ‘hardware’ of our university. You will notice this immediately when you walk around the campus. We repaired the roof of the castle, renovated the tennis lodge and started restoring the labyrinth to its former glory. And we recently held the re-opening ceremony of the Plesman Pavilion to celebrate the completion of its renovation. These are positive developments that concern the exterior. But of course, Nyenrode is more than just the campus and the castle. I cannot emphasize enough that Nyenrode is all about people. It is the people who make our university that unique Nyenrode community. People who stimulate each other to make the most of their talents and abilities and to achieve their goals together. For me personally, this has also been the primary source of motivation when formulating the strategy for 2020.

It was very rewarding to see the enthusiasm among our faculty and staff when we asked them to think about the strategy for the future of Nyenrode. The involvement and enthusiasm

to contribute and to participate in this process was overwhelming, throughout the university and further afield. We all realize, from the people who welcome you at the gate to the lecturers and our alumni, that the Nyenrode community stands for high quality education, also in the future. It is wonderful to see this and it gives me a great boost of energy.

I look back on the past year with a very positive feeling and I would like to thank everyone for their contribution. We can expect to be faced with many challenges in the years to come but I look to the future with complete confidence and I am very motivated to start implementing the plans for the coming years together with the Nyenrode community.

‘Determine the course and persevere’ that is how i would like to characterize the past year for Nyenrode. the university, represented by our faculty and staff, and supported by our alumni, has accomplished a lot in 2013. we are pleased to be able to show this to you in this year overview, a tradition which was reinstated last year. this year overview is different from an annual report in which the emphasis is on figures. as there are so many important and interesting activities that take place at Nyenrode that cannot be expressed in numbers. with this year overview, we can bring alive the world behind the data and provide insight into our plans for the future for everyone who is a friend of Nyenrode.

A number of organizational changes were made in order to ensure that nyenrode is better prepared for our plans for the future. As of 1 September 2013, we now have aUniversity Board consisting of three members who bear joint responsibility. Another important development is the simplified governance structure of our supervisory body, the nyenrode foundation. The Supervisory Board and the Board of the foundation were combined into one supervisory body, in which the alumni, faculty and staff have also been given a say in the appointment of members. finally, works Council elections were held resulting in the election of an enthusiastic

new works Council. These times demand a new approach to education. we see increasing competition in a saturated market with less and less funding for research. At the same time, there are opportunities for rapid growth of blended learning in emerging economies in the east, South America and Africa.

furthermore, we see an increasing demand for applied research. Based on these insights and the perspectives of our stakeholders, we began the process of reformulating our vision and our mission while maintaining our core values.

In the strategic field, the main focus for Nyenrode in 2013 was on making choices for the future. we are on course with the university, but we are also facing several challenges. we are living in a time in which the world is changing rapidly. what we have to do now is to determine what we want to focus on and therefore it is of the utmost importance that we define our goals. we need to maintain close contacts with the business community and the public and semi-public sector as this is where the demand for our educational programs and our research comes from. we involve our staff members and our other stakeholders in this process as they form the Nyenrode community and they work hard every day to achieve results. together, we have worked hard in 2013 to determine our focus in the strategy for 2020.

‘ONwaRDs tO 2020!’Interview with Miša Džoljić

‘ Together, we have worked hard in 2013 to determine our focus in the strategy for 2020.’

ViSion 2020: Nyenrode Business Universiteit, preferred partner of internationally focused students and organizations, is a top-20 European education and research community and a member of a global network of top business and finance schools.

MiSSion: Nyenrode Business Universiteit serves society by shaping managers and professionals. We develop responsible leaders, entrepreneurs and organizations through action-oriented education and research.

in addition to these strategic themes, we are working on optimizing the academic program that we offer, for example, the program portfolio of the executive programs. it is important to offer a distinctive proposition ina market in which there is a growing number of competitors. in this context, we are also looking into the modularization and the composition of programs in order to be able to offer a unique range of programs that together form a continuum.

At the same time, we have put a lot of effort into the development of a BSc program in Business Administration. And we are rather proud of the result; it has become a true nyenrode program which is being offered by our subsidiary nyenrode new Business School in Amsterdam. our core values leadership, entrepreneurship and Stewardship, our international orientation and our Head, Heart and Hands philosophy are embedded in the curriculum. we are now waiting for the accreditation which will take place next year. our intention is to set up a BSc on campus in Breukelen.

for us, focus also means becoming more selective in the collaborations that we enter into. Traditionally, we are an enterprising university where many collaboration initiatives are launched and exist. However, this entre-preneurial zeal has also resulted in too many initiatives remaining limited to good intentions or not being developed to their full potential. Therefore, in the past year, we have critically examined our existing collaborations and have determined which collaborations we intend to invest in and which collaborations we intend to terminate because they have not resulted in the joint added value that we aimed for. we wish to be able to actively develop the full potential of a collaboration in the long run. A good example of this is the collabora-tion with the reputable S.P. Jain institute of Management and research in Mumbai, with which we plan to set up a joint degree program and collaborate in the executive modular MBA in Business & iT. At the same time, we plan to strengthen and expand existing long-term collaborations such as the University of oregon lundquist College of Business and Stellenbosch University in South Africa.

we aim to further improve various activities in the operational field in the coming year. Practical issues such as making a more efficient use of the CrM system throughout the organi-zation, further streamlining the administrative processes and running the campus in a more cost-efficient manner are examples. But also how and through which channels should we communicate with our stakeholders? A number of lines of communication run from nyenrode to the outside world. Certainly in these times in which everyone communicates with everyone via the internet, this is something that we have to consider carefully. if we succeed in feeding and managing these communication channels then this offers great opportunities.

our university consists of a close-knit com-munity of highly motivated professionals with a strong dedication to nyenrode. we saw this confirmed again with the homecomings of the classes of 1947 and 1953, who listened to our plans for the future with a great deal of interest. or an alumnus who gave a very generous donation to the university in the form of stocks. But you also see it in an excellent and well-attended conference on governance in the semi-public sector that was organized at the initiative of one of the ‘VCV Circles’ in cooperation with nyenrode. The people who constitute the culture of nyenrode together, students, staff and alumni, form a real community. This nyenrode community is alive and active, you can see that in every area. There are not many other universities that have this.

“We plan to strengthen and expand existing long-term collaborations.”

The nyenrode Alumni association ‘Voortgezette Compagnie van Verre’ (VCV) is the network of former students (alumni) of the nyenrode Business Universiteit. with 15,000 nyenrode alumni, spread over more than 100 countries, and over 5,500 active VCV members, we are one of the largest and well-organized alumni associations in the netherlands. The VCV was founded in 1957 and is a non-profit organization, run by volunteers and four staff members at the VCV office.

nyenrodians form a unique social and business network based on their common entrepreneurial spirit. The goal of the VCV is to offer optimal added value to its alumni by developing opportunities on a professional, educational, business and social level. As the alumni association of the nyenrode Business Universiteit, we support nyenrode in maintaining and upgrading its position as a leading business university.

Many activities of the nyenrode Alumni VCV are initiated and executed by its members and its sub committees. There are currently over 52 different committees that organize social and business events regularly for the members and their invitees. ranging from entrepreneurship to Sustainability and from Amsterdam to Hong Kong. Keeping up to date with the latest economic developments, during the past year we have organized successful Career events, investor relations events and are currently working on a new initiative to help unemployed alumni in their quest for a new job. The nyenrode interna-tional Alumni evening, nyenrode rally and VCV Golf day are examples of social events that were also highly appreciated by our alumni in 2013. in 2013 as well, our alumni continued the connection with the BBA students of the nyenrode new Business School by inviting them to several circle- meetings such as Business in india.

Accountancy & Controlling alumni and alumni of our general management and leadership open programs can now become members of the VCV for free retroactively. After obtaining their diploma or certificate, those students and participants can become members for

two years free of charge. By paying their initial membership fee, the university wants to stimulate them to experience what the VCV is all about.

A special event this year was the celebration of the 25 years of employment of Metty willemse, our highly appreciated co-worker at the VCV office. Before she started at the VCV, Metty already worked for nyenrode for 10 years, which makes her a well-known and trusted face for many of our alumni.

The VCV interactively communicates and interacts with all nyenrode alumni through our website, our bi-monthly newsletter, our quarterly magazine and through the various social media platforms such as linkedin, facebook and Twitter.

on our website www.NYENRODEaLuMNi.NL you will find more information about our unique network and numerous activities.

Nyenrode wishes to enter into a dialogue with the outside world more intensively. through modularization of our programs, we intend to create more flexibility with regard to the moment at which a student follows a specific course. in this manner, we are better able to cater to the wishes of our clients. we also do this by making more effective use of the CRM system with which we remain in contact with students and alumni. and a curatorium, consisting of people who know the market and who are willing to provide advice on our programs, will be appointed for each program.

we had a full-time and part-time MSc in Management accreditation by nVAo. we have not received their evaluation yet but expect the programs to be up to the standard with some comments by nVAo and some suggestions for improvements in the future. The necessary effort has been put into educational innovation in 2013 and we have started to implement the BKo (Basis Kwalificatie onderwijs), a qualification for teachers in scientific education. we are thrilled that we have launched a new master’s program in fiscal law. The Bachelor and the Master Accountancy and Master Controlling have received a positive evaluation by the nVAo and have been granted accreditation up to 2019.

we are an institute for education and personal development. Personal skills and personal development are not only key in the Management and Business programs but are also receiving more and more attention in the Accountancy & Controlling programs. leadership, entrepreneurship and Stewardship (leS) is being implemented in the programs and is incorporated in Career & Personal development, in our marketing and communication and in the criteria on which we select our students. The appointment of the Campus dean is related to this as well. She is also the community manager. The aim is to let people be part of our community; however, that also entails obligations. we have to be active in that area: calling people to account about what they are doing.

we serve society by shaping responsible leaders. if you train, educate and develop people who are capable and respectful, who do things differently, companies and society will benefit. Gandhi said: everybody is built in the same manner, it is our behavior that makes us individuals.

The market for accountants and Accountancy programs is under pressure. All the more reason to listen carefully to wishes and demands from our partners in the market. An example is that, in order to achieve a better alignment between the university education programs and the demands of the workplace, as from the course year 2012-2013 nyenrode now offers the (post) master Accountancy programs in various routes. in consultation with their employer, students are not required to attend lectures during months in which they are very busy with their jobs. They can also choose to follow the program at the regular pace, at a faster pace or at a slower pace. The program can also be geared to their on-the-job training, internal training program, career and summer vacation.

in addition, we are entering into agreements with the employers of students regarding exchanging information and the coordination between the internal and external training and development program.

New Board Programin 2013, the new Board Program (nBP) started with two new groups. daniëlle Melis joined the new Board Program faculty staff. She plans to obtain her doctorate in the field of Corporate Governance in 2014 and will then be appointed Academic director of the new Board Program. She is also the chairwoman of the nyenrode Corporate Governance institute (nCGi). The nBP has contacted the Munich Business School, which plans to launch a German version of the nBP for German executives and non-executives at the end of 2014. nyenrode and the Munich Business School are pleased to announce that they signed an Affiliate Agreement in december 2013 in which the cooperation was formalized.

Commissarissencyclus (Supervisory Board Cycle)nCd, the netherlands association for supervisory and executive board members, and nyenrode have decided to terminate their cooperation in the field of the Commissarissencylus (Supervisory Board Cycle). Setting up the Commissarissencyclus was a joint initiative at the time. However, over the years, nyenrode has increasingly become the main driving force behind this initiative. Both parties agreed to go separate ways from the 1st of January 2014 onwards, thanking each other for the mutual contacts over so many years. The further development of this initiative will be carried out by nyenrode independently from now on.

LEArN Factory anniversaryon Tuesday 8 october 2013, it was exactly one year ago that the leArn factory was officially opened by the four partners of the leArn initiative. This one-year anniversary was celebrated with an inspirational afternoon in the leArn factory. The theme was lean Management: successful through passion, maturity and handicraft. A few days earlier, the leArn factory was the venue for training for the health care sector. Twenty physicians assembled to learn the lean principles and to experience for themselves just what it is to work lean. At the end of September, the leArn factory also saw the kick-off meeting for the newly-inaugurated VCV lean Manage-ment Circle. leArn is an initiative of nyenrode

in partnership with ABn AMro, Achmea and McKinsey & Company. in 2013, the first leArn research projects were also launched.

Since it became part of nyenrode Business Universiteit in 2010, i can truly say that the nyenrode new Business School is now fully built up from the nyenrode dnA. The educational alignment of the BBA and the MSc was obviously a logical step; however, we also see that our students have become true nyenrodians. nyenrode’s vision on education, summarized in leadership, entrepreneurship and Stewardship, is shared and promoted widely within the BBA. The core values of nyenrode new Business School: entrepreneur-ship, Creativity and responsible Business are well aligned with this. The Jongste Compagnie van Verre, the student association of the new Business School, plays an increasingly important role in our BBA with regard to personal development and education.

we have seen an increase in the number of studentsfrom229studentsin2012to260in 2013. we expect to have 320 students in 2014. we are still growing and therefore 2013 was mainly dominated by the new phase for nyenrode new Business School. in the second half of the past year, we were very busy with the preparations for the relocation on 30 and 31 december, 2013, to the building de 5 Keizers on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. A fantastic, central first-rate location from which we can further realize and expand our ambitions.

we continue to work hard on improving the quality of the education that we offer. The next step that we have taken in this context is that we will be participating in the dutch national

Student Survey as of September 2013. This is a good addition to our existing communication with our student council about the quality of our education. The international character of the nyenrode new Business School was also reflected in the study trips to india (110 stu-dents)andtoEthiopia(26students)in2013.in 2014, 45 students will travel to China.

A highlight in 2013, which we are extremely proud of, is the contribution that we have been able to make to “freedom through education”, a project of the foundation “round Table india” that raises money to build elementary schools for underprivileged children in india. Through The new Business School Charity foundation, which we founded in 2009, our students succeeded in raising a record amount of €122,000 in January 2012. with this amount, these children will be given a better prospect for the future. we will also continue to support international and national (development) projects via our foundation in 2014. we do this in a financial and a material sense carried out by students of the nyenrode new Business School. The projects to be supported are selected according to the themes education, entrepreneurship, health care, developing rural areas and improving access to the labor market.

it is great to see how our students are able to make a flying start with their own company immediately after graduating. Again in 2013, a number of good and successful start-ups have resulted from the project Business Planning.

finally, at the end of 2013, one of our alumni, as an employee at lenS, was involved in winning the Herman wijffels innovation award with a current distributor for solar panels.

enough reasons therefore to look back to the past year with pride and satisfaction; although we prefer to look ahead. we were very pleased to observe that there was an overwhelming interest for our school at our first information evening at the end of last year. Therefore, we are positive regarding the prospects for the intake of new students in both the spring and the fall.

RaPiD gROwthJan van der Plas on the Jongste Compagnie van Verre (JCV)

the Jongste Compagnie van verre, the JCv, is the student association for the bachelor students of the Nyenrode community and it is based in amsterdam at the Nyenrode New business school. the JCv is the young-est van verre association established within Nyenrode and is governed by the iii Collegie der Raedt van v. Like its predecessors, our association seeks to promote the further development of its members and it offers them a unique experience that cannot be found at any other institute. the JCv strives to challenge its members on a daily basis and seeks to expand their comfort zone. it also enables members to obtain a competitive advantage that distinguishes our members from other graduates across the world.

Since its founding in 2011, the JCV has grown at a rapid rate, and as of this year, the association has seen its first alumni join the Voortgezette Compagnie van Verre “VCV”. At present, the Jongste Compagnie van Verre has 140 members, who partake in twenty-two inimi-table committees. As time passes, additional traditions are being introduced within the association, such as the “Baptism”, “Chairman’s Gesture”, “introduction” and many more.

The founding fathers felix weerts, Josh ward and Menno van eijk have created the JCV as an associa-tion that is organized “by students, for students”. our members have the opportunity to share their passion or challenge their peers by setting up a committee of their own. They are also encouraged to join other existing committees where the JCV affiliates can collaborate or compete with one another on a race track, virtual stock market - Handelshuys, or attend company visits organized by CUBA - Committee for Useful Business Activities.

This past year, the JCV has strengthened its ties with the nieuwe Compagnie van Verre - nCV and the Voortgezette Compagnie van Verre. The iii Collegie der raedt van V strives to build upon these relations and collaborate more with the van Verre associations in order to further unify the nyenrode community. we look forward to challenging the nCV, and their affiliated committees such as rugby Club nijenrode or de Zilveren rijder.

all the prerequisites must be just right to ensure an optimal Nyenrode experience in which customer intimacy is the central focal point. visitors should feel welcome and should be able to enjoy sufficient attention, comfort and good facilities during their stay in a well-maintained environment that is in keeping with what they may expect from Nyenrode. in order to make this possible and to continue to make this possible, the Real Estate & Landscaping and hospitality & service departments - both under the supervision of a new manager - have undertaken many activities in 2013.

The real estate & landscaping and Hospitality & Services departments are internal service providers for nyenrode. our tasks lie in the area of events, housing, gardening and landscaping, maintenance, facilities, purchasing, security and the environment. Some of these tasks are carried out directly by our departments and other tasks are outsourced under our supervision. Spear points for the departments when carrying out these tasks are the standardization of processes and optimization of costs. we carry out our work in accordance with market standards and we also have in-depth knowledge of the (changing) working environment of our client. As a result, we can allocate the people, processes and resources in such a manner that we can provide an optimal service. we are proud when we are able to achieve the best results together with our client.

it is my task together with the real estate & landscaping Team to manage the buildings and the estate in such a manner that they provide a meaningful contribution to the quality of the education and the well-being of the students, faculty and staff. They should also promote the unique image of the university. The estate, the monuments and the buildings are important for the “nyenrode experience”. we are therefore proud that we are responsible for the management, maintenance and new developments that take place on the nyenrode estate.

The hall is now much lighter and has a new bar and outside terrace. Part of the hall, where a large picture of founding father Albert Plesman now hangs, is also in use as a breakfast area. The lecture hall was also modernized and fitted out with up-to-date facilities. The Plesman Pavilion has four so-called break-out rooms that can be used for the education programs. These rooms were also thoroughly renovated. The building has been equipped withan energy-saving lighting system.

New entrance to the castleThe summer months were also used to carry out renovation activities in the castle. The hall directly behind the entrance of the castle has again been given the function of welcome area with a cloakroom for guests. now, we can welcome our guests at the castle in a much more stylish manner than before. near the entry, there is also a new space reserved specially for the host and the hostess of the castle.

Sustainable renovation of the donjonThe old slates on the roofs of the four towers of the donjon, the stair tower against the donjon and the restrooms next to the stairs have been replaced with new slates which have been fastened with copper nails. The copper nails are much more sustainable that the iron nails which were used previously. The pointing of the battlements and the chimneys on the donjon has also been renewed. in addition, the necessary brickwork has been carried out, including the completely new brickwork of the chimneys.

Nandus Food & Finance The last nandu on the estate died last year. for many people these characteristic birds were strongly connected to nyenrode. Therefore, we were very grateful when the students of the Modular executive MBA in food & finance donated two nandus to nyenrode at the occasion of their graduation in March. They also donated food for the birds for over a year. Head gardener Jan-willem Jagtenberg accepted the check on behalf of nyenrode. The new nandus were given the appropriate names “food” and “finance”.

Lecture hall De Rooij 104The lecture hall 104 in the de rooij building was completely renovated this summer. The old fixtures and fittings needed to be replaced after 20 years of intensive use. The whole hall was renovated whereby not only new (sponsored) chairs were installed but also new carpeting, energy-saving lighting and completely new presentation equipment. The area has now been made very suitable for webcasts. Charging points have been installed for students to charge their laptops, tablets and mobile phones. A side wall now contains a large panorama photograph that literally pulls the estate into the lecture hall, without becoming a distracting factor. Similar renovations will also be carried out in the coming period in adjacent halls.

New beginning for the labyrinthThose who occasionally take a stroll around the estate have been able to observe that the labyrinth had been going downhill in recent years. The first signs of a disease that was afflicting the hedges appeared around four years ago. A search for a solution did not produce any results. As a result of the high humidity in combination with moderate temperatures and not much light, the disease could easily spread among the shrubs. The gardeners at the loo Palace in Apeldoorn had experienced a similar problem. After consulting with the gardeners at the loo, the gardeners at nyenrode opted for a painful but radical solution: complete removal of the hedges of the labyrinth and then planting new hedges. As there used to be a tennis court in the spot where the labyrinth had been constructed there was not much life in the soil. So the acidity of the soil had to be improved first. After that the hedges of the labyrinth can be planted again. To this end, 4,500 Japanese holly plants were purchased that have the same manner of growth as the box-wood hedges. These holly plants were supplied by the loo Palace.

Tennis cabin restoredThe small tennis cabin next to the labyrinth has been restored and returned to its original state as far as possible. The woodworms have been removed from the building by making use of heat instead of chemicals and the wood was restored. The leaded windows were restored and the roof was redone. The little tennis cabin was also painted again mostly in the original colors such as ox blood red.

caterer Vineyard. Based on their proposals, the decision was taken to switch to a new caterer, Vermaat. This caterer was preferred above the other parties based on its price-quality ratio, the support that the caterer can provide to nyenrode and the possibilities for conceptual modernization of the catering. it is expected that the catering costs will decrease substantially. The contract with Vermaat starts on 1 January 2014. Separate contracts will be concluded with Vineyard and Martinair Party Service for party catering and external events. Thus the organizers of events at nyenrode will have a wider range of possibilities to choose from.

Vermaat appointed as the new catererAt the beginning of 2012, the decision was taken to outsource the whole catering process at nyenrode again through a tender. Three parties participated in the tender, including the existing

Coffee tastingCaterer Vermaat will also provide the coffee facilities at nyenrode after 1 January 2014. As good coffee may well be one of the most important employment conditions, nyenrode staff were given the oppor-tunity to participate in a coffee sampling project and to indicate which brand of coffee they preferred. The majority of the participants opted for coffee roasted by J.J. darboven. The high quality coffee of this brand has the fairtrade/Max Havelaar hallmark.

New restrooms in the De Rooij building new restrooms were installed in the de rooij building in the spring of 2013. These areas were completely restyled with the assistance of an interior designer.

A better lifeAs we value stewardship highly as an organization, we have asked our caterer to remove meat from bio-industry chickens, calves in veal crates and other animals that have been raised in poor conditions from the menu. As of 1 September 2013, poultry, eggs, beef, veal and pork must at least satisfy the Better life Hallmark criteria for one star. furthermore, biological bread will be served from now on.

The 3 FontyneThe white house at the exit of the estate was formerly known as the house for the rector, but as of 1 october 2013 the building the 3 fontyne has been taken into use as a location for events. The living room and the garden are ideal to enjoy an informal and separate gathering with participants, guests or colleagues. The 3 fontyne can be used for every type of event, but is especially suitable for team building sessions, private dinners and workshops. The lovely view over the garden and the fields contributes to a relaxed atmosphere.

OPEN fOR visitORsin order to maintain an optimal undisturbed learning environment for our guests, it is not possible to open the estate for every interested visitor who simply wishes to come and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. However, a number of exceptions were made again this year. for instance, the nyenrode estate was open to the public during open Monument day and for a number of walking tours. These walking tours were organized by the iVn (the dutch institute for nature education and Sustainability) and a local church community.

DigitaL sERviCE sYstEM“in order to make the services provided by our staff departments more visible and accessible the iCT, real estate & landscaping and Hospitality & Services departments have jointly implemented an information system”, Kathelijn Simonis, Manager Business Support, says. “The new system called facilitor is accessible for all nyenrode employees via the intranet. This convenient tool can be used for reporting and making reservations, registering visitors and placing orders. in the next year, the functionalities will be further developed and improved. in a later phase, the digital services will also become available for students on campus.”

ENERgY MaNagEMENtAt the end of 2013, a project was started in cooperation with a number of technical partners in order to achieve a more efficient and cost-conscious energy consumption. for example by installing ‘smart meters’ and better monitoring, we will obtain more insight into the actual energy consumption in specific locations so that we can take more effective energy-saving measures.

fORMaLiziNg aND MakiNg ExPLiCitRoland Speklé and Roberto Flören on faculty, research and publications at Nyenrode

for Roberto flören, head of faculty, and Roland speklé, Director of Research, 2013 was characterized by transparency: showing what you are doing. in addition to the faculty Management Charter that had already been drafted, a Professorial Policy was also developed. Criteria were laid down in this document that the faculty must satisfy in the field of teaching, research and conduct as a good Nyenrodian. in addition, within the framework of the strategy for 2020, a number of committees are examining how research fits in with the total Nyenrode business model.

flören describes the activities of the faculty as a bridge between two banks: on the one side the practice of the business sector and on the other side the academic world. The nyenrode output rating System has been developed in consultation with the faculty and indicates the extent to which a publication in a specific journal counts in the appraisal. But the applicability in the field is also important. An example is leArn research, the research division that was connected to the leArn factory in 2013. Speklé regards this as a strong concept: “This structure ensures that the feedback between research and practice is maintained.”

The faculty teaches various target groups and is selected and assessed with regard to teaching skills. The third criterion is: being active for nyenrode outside your own field of expertise, whether that concerns providing assistance to a doctoral student or raising funds. The three criteria apply to all four of the levels within the faculty: the Phd researchers, assistant professors, associate professors and full professors. furthermore, a virtual class has been set up consisting of ten associate professors who have the possibility to become professors within now and five years. They receive targeted coaching and advice. flören and Speklé believe that providing such clarity is in accordance with a good personnel policy.

it was not the large amount of competition in the traditional banking segment, but the desire to grow that stimulated banks to engage in new activities with lower interest margins as a side

effect. The desire to expand caused banks to switch from relationship directed banking to transaction directed banking. The change

in the operating model transformed the balance sheets of banks and lowered the interest margins of banks as a side effect. These surprising conclusions go against the generally accepted assumption that banks started new business activities because the interest margins were under pressure due to competition.

This dissertation shows that managers who excel at the political game behind the scenes can gain power that can be decisive at crucial times. These managers thus increase their own job satisfaction and are better able to promote their own interests with regard to their career and position. At the same time, politically skilled managers contribute to productivity, innovation and decision-making within organizations. Therefore, the study argues that paying attention to this manage-ment talent in the recruitment and selection and in education and training provides added value.

The association will be governed by the lXiXe Collegie der Heeren Vijf in 2014.The ties between nyenrode and the nieuwe Compagnie van Verre are strong. All members of the nCV are students at nyenrode, and many students at nyenrode are members of our association. This cooperation makes nyenrode a unique community. The nCV has a strong own identity, is independent and builds forth on the traditions that our association hasbuiltupoverthepast67years.The students who have studied at nyenrode over the years have shared the same experiences as the students before them and have thus become true nyenrodians. Through the work that they have done for the various committees, they have learned to assume responsibility, to be enterprising and to ultimately organize fantastic events. examples of successful annual events are the Jazz night, the Garden Party, the Ski Trip and two study trips to other countries, for

example Brazil and the Middle east (istanbul, oman, dubai) in 2013. Sports on campus have become very popular among today’s students and it is a good way to spend time in between studying and partying. our members have kept fit by doing a lot of rowing and playing rugby and golf.

in this manner, we carry on a longstanding tradition of leadership, entrepreneurship and stewardship. The nCV has a big influence on the personal development of the nyenrode student with a hands-on mentality. while at nyenrode as a university the emphasis lies on

in 2014, the board of the association will again consist of three gentlemen and two ladies. in the coming years, the nieuwe Compagnie van Verre will continue to follow its course full steam ahead. Always listening to its members, former-members and in good communication with nyenrode. it remains a great challenge to take everyone’s interests into account and to maintain the association’s own identity. Ultimately, we all have the same goal: to deliver excellent graduates to the business community

each year. our class has had a great time, has learned a lot and is able to perform in a pressure-cooker environment and will always look back with pleasure to this unique experience!

CREatiNg OPPORtuNitiEs fOR taLENtAntoine Boelen on the Nyenrode Fund Foundation

i have been the chairman of the nyenrode fund foundation (Stichting nyenrode fonds, Snf) since May 2013. This role is a way for me to give something back to nyenrode. i was fortunate to be able to do my BBA at this beautiful business university from 1989 to 1992 and i still have very special memories of that time. nyenrode has made a real contribution to my personal development, has offered me great opportunities during my career and has provided me with friendships that are irreplaceable. i would really like future students to have this unique experience and i hope that the Snf, together with the alumni, will be able to make an important contribution to maintaining THe nyenrode spirit.

thE ObJECtivE Of sNf is siMPLE: Fundraising among the business community, institutions, capital funds, public bodies and private individuals to support the objectives of the Nyenrode Foundation established in Breukelen, now and in the future, as well as providing scholarships to students at Nyenrode university and furthermore the administration, designation and allocation of the funds that have been raised.

At present, Snf makes a large contribution to the scholarship program whereby alumni also play an important role in the selection process. However, Snf wishes to achieve even more, such as funding professorships, contributing to relevant research and other matters to support the faculty. we also try to ensure that our activities are well-aligned with nyenrode’s three strategic pillars: leadership, entrepreneurship and Stewardship. our role in establishing the business accelerator 60Acres,aplatformforentrepreneursatNyenrode,isagoodexampleofthis.

As the Board of Snf, we have set ourselves the goal to have the fund grow to a total of 10 million euros in 2020. This is ambitious, however, it should be feasible if we look at, for example, the total alumni network and the strong ties that many alumni have with nyenrode.

of course, we target an as broad a group of alumni as possible through the various programs. with our efforts, we do hope to receive a number of large donations or legacies. There are already good examples of this: we recently received € 50,000 from a legacy and the American alumni (united in the American friends of nyenrode University) just donated $ 125,000. The classes are also active for example the class of 1958 with funds for over five scholarships during five years.

This is, of course, great news and we hope to receive additional support to realize our ambitions. The VCV and Snf have also recently decided to carry out a number of administrative activities from one joint office, which will benefit both the effectiveness and efficiency. in addition, the cooperation with the new board of the American friends of nyenrode University has been intensified.

A small number of scholarships were sponsored privately by alumni. The interest of the business community has decreased strongly since 2009. The revolving Scholarship Project was launched in 2010, in which scholarships are financed by alumni (classes, debating societies, year clubs, VCV Circles and individual alumni) whereby the recipient is expected to repay the scholarship in the future. The number of scholarships that are sponsored by alumni grew from two in 2010 to 40 in 2013.

New BoardAfter more than two years as chairman, frank van wezel (alumnus 1958) - who, for that matter, also received an honorary doctorate from Anglia ruskin University (Cambridge Chelmsford) in the fall - handed the hammer over to Antoine Boelen (alumnus 1989). Miriam Zwaan terminated her board activities for VCV, but remained a member of the board of Snf. last but not least, professor Geert Sanders joined the Board. He has been active as a

fundraiser for many years and, within the netherlands, he is regarded as an expert in the field of fundraising within the dutch university context. Sanders has held the professorship Academic entrepreneurship - institutional Advancement at nyenrode since 2012.

highLightsClaim your chairSnf launched a new project this year: “Claim your chair”. Sponsors were sought for three lecture halls in the de rooij building that were being renovated. The board members of Snf and the university gave the good example in this case. in the meantime, without much publicity, nearly 50% of the chairs in the first hall have been sponsored. it is expected that the number of sponsors will soon increase as soon as the first sponsor name plates appear on the chairs.

Alumni selection committeeseach year, on the day of the opening of the new academic year, alumni selection committees come to nyenrode. These alumni selection committees represent alumni that have funded scholarships in that year. from among all scholarship winners of nyenrode, they choose their ‘own’ winner.

A word of thanks to donorsevery spring, Snf thanks all of its donors, also the donors of previous years. At the same time, the alumni scholarships of the past year are formally awarded by these same alumni and finally the new alumni scholarship agree-ments are signed. former winners of scholar-ships are also invited so that we can see how they have progressed. one of the reasons why maintaining the ties with these alumni is important is that they can also make new scholarships possible with their donations. finally, this event is used to place donors of objects in the limelight by unveiling a name plate in connection with the object. This year, it was frank van wezel (alumnus 1958) and his wife Caroline’s turn who officially took the new pergola in the rose garden into use. The new pergola had been financed by frank van wezel and his wife together with their guests at the occasion of their wedding a few years earlier.

Life Time Achievement AwardThis year again, Snf and nyenrode Business Universiteit awarded a life Time Achievement Award. This award is granted to someone who can serve as a role model for students. enterprising leaders who dare to take the initiative. This time, alumnus Gerry Staartjes, who passed away in 2010, was honored posthumously by presenting the award to his widow.

what stuck with me from the past year was working with a wonderful nyenrode team across all our programs. we have achieved good accreditation results with great team work. The Best Masters title also is something to be very proud of as well as the fact that our core values leadership, entrepreneurship and Stewardship (leS) have become more and more integrated into our programs, organization and the minds of people. The structured approach to accredi-tations and rankings is paying off and will be continued.

nyenrode’s ambition in our care for quality is to be a world-class university renowned for our quality programs. we aim to be within the top 20 of european business schools because of the quality of our programs, our educational philosophy and successful implementation of educating responsible leaders. we have made enormous progress in getting the quality cycles right. now we need to focus on implementation and monitoring.

The values leadership, entrepreneurship and Stewardship (leS) are integrated in everything and cannot be separated. They are reflected in how we use our heart, hands and head to make this world a better place with the business community as an important stakeholder to do so.

Quality is a matter that concerns all of us. we all need to be aware of our own quality issues and how we deal with this with the aim to increase the performance of nyenrode as an educational institute educating responsible leaders.

The chair of the exam Committee signs the diplomas at the end of the course; this signifies that the exam Committee stands for the quality of the program and therefore of the diploma. Additionally, an Assessment Committee will be installed, led by Anne-Marie Kruis. This is a committee required by law (wet op het Hoger onderwijs, wHw). it is responsible for the quality assurance of all the assessments within the program.

To support both the exam Committees and the Assessment Committee, nyenrode Business Universiteit employs an assessment specialist within the Academic Services Center. To ensure internal coherence, the chairs of the three exam Committees form a central exam Committee, chaired by Christine Anderton, that discusses policy issues and advises the Associate dean and dean of degree Programs about assessment issues.

‘OPLEiDiNgsCOMMissiE’ fOR aLL DEgREE PROgRaMs sEt iN PLaCEAccording to the wet op het Hoger onderwijs (wHw), it is necessary for each program to have an ‘opleidingscommissie’ (curriculum committee). The task of an ‘opleidingscommissie’ is to provide advice to Program Management and the dean on the rules and regulations, including the examination rules, for the program. furthermore, the ‘opleidingscommissie’ carries out an annual evaluation of the rules and regulations and the way things are going with the program. And finally, the ‘opleidingscommissie’ formulates recommendations concerning all educational aspects of the program for Program Management and the dean.

aDvisORY bOaRD (CuRatORiuM)Although not required by law, we will install an advisory board for each program to have a direct link with the professional sector which the students in the program are aiming at. An example of such a board is the Program review Board (PrB) of the modular MBA programs. it ensures the quality from the sectors’ perspectives.

VAS, the Vereniging van Accountancy Studenten, has been looking after the interests of accoun-tancy students since 1971 and offers support for students in various ways. The VAS looks after the interests of students, making sure that the quality of the accountancy programs is safeguarded and by dedicating itself to various study-related matters. The VAS has approxi-mately 2,500 members as every accountancy student is a member of the VAS. A smaller group of students actively participates in the various bodies of the VAS. The board is responsible for general matters and for directing the other bodies of the VAS. i am currently chairing the board, with naëchestah Blokker, Harry Bontje, Mike Broekhof and willem neuvel as other members.

The Student Council meets on a monthly basis and discusses developments regarding the accountancy programs of nyenrode. As the representative of student interests, VAS has a seat on several of the nyenrode Accountancy department’s consultative bodies and task forces. Several years ago, nyenrode and the VAS initiated a Steering Committee Quality Control (‘Stuurgroep Kwaliteitszorg’)

in which complaints lodged by students and developments in the accountancy programs of nyenrode are discussed. in addition, VAS puts a lot of effort into stimulating the bonds among students and reinforcing student ties with the university. The Activities Commit-tee organizes various activities throughout the year. ‘Achter de Komma’ is our magazine which offers the latest developments of the VAS and other interesting articles for students.

during 2013, the Students Council met on a monthly basis and we focused, among others, on the digitalization of the accountancy programs. The VAS represented students on various open days of the university informing prospective accountancy students of nyenrode, represented students on the annual teachers’ seminar, organized the introduction evening for new students (together with the university) and organized its annual sailing weekend.

PRiDE Marcel Hoes on marketing and communications

we devote a lot of attention to our potential students and participants. we really want to get to know them to see if there is an academic and cultural ‘click’ with Nyenrode. we do this to ensure that they will be successful. so this is also what we wish to communicate and share with the world. we are a community you would like to be part of.

right from the moment of nyenrode’s founding, daring has been a significant motivator. everything tackled here has to do with boldness. And we try to translate that into a corporate campaign which no other university conducts in this way. The market created us as nyenrode, and it is ultimately the cornerstone of all our marketing and communications.

Proud people like to talk about their studies, their work, their families, their children. right now we are seeing how pride is coming to the surface among students, staff and alumni. when people are proud, they tell the stories themselves. These times demand the use of modern visual tools for communication and marketing. This year we got our own studio with a green screen so that we can easily make short videos, for example with faculty members, students and participants; these videos can then be distributed swiftly via newsroom and the social media. we were concerned in recent months that people might not be willing, or might not dare, to talk. But it went so smoothly. People simply opened up. This says that they are proud of what they are describing.

Although nyenrode is only a small player in the international playing field, it has big ambitions. in this context, nyenrode is targeting emerging markets in particular as these countries will make an important contribution to the global economic growth in the future.

The University of oregon - lundquist College of Business (USA), the University of Stellenbosch Business School (South Africa), the indian institute of foreign Trade (india), S.P. Jain institute of Management & research (india) and the University of Cambridge Judge Business School (UK) are important collaboration partners.

everyone is so incredibly busy with the nyenrode product that we often forget to communicate about this. There’s so much to tell. The new corporate brochure explains what we take for granted: what is nyenrode, in fact? Take our premises here in this wonderful environment, for instance. in contrast to the outside world, we often do not realize just how special this is. The corporate brochure is perhaps our most distributed brochure ever. we have now had 2,700 copies printed, in dutch and english together. All of them are gone.

At nyenrode we are not too good at telling ourselves and others when we have done something well. nevertheless this does also have a positive aspect: we do certainly have the scope to consider things critically. you can learn from mistakes, after all, and from things which don’t go quite so well. nevertheless i think we should now tell ourselves and others more oftenabout our successes.

Trade with Bangladesh

The embassy of the Kingdom of the netherlands in dhaka has partnered with nyenrode in order to stimulate economic relations between the netherlands and Bangladesh. The project at nyenrode is conducted by Prof. dr. désirée van Gorp and her team. 2013 was an eventful year for the Bangladesh Trade & investment project with a focus on agri-business and water sectors. The year started with the launch of the netherlands Bangladesh Business Platform (www.nbbp.org), which provides access to economic information and is an important instrument to boost trade. Two sector studies on agri-business and water were published and presented during a sector meeting at nyenrode in June, which was aimed at informing the dutch business community on the economic, political and social developments in Bangladesh. in September, nyenrode in cooperation with the embassy organized a trade mission to dhaka for thirteen dutch companies and organizations to explore business opportunities in the Bangladeshi agro-food and water industries. in november, there were thirteen Bangladeshi companies and organizations visiting the netherlands to identify business opportunities in the agro-food and water/textiles industries. The Personal leadership Track posed questions such as: How do i learn? what can i learn from others? what are my own qualities? what are the qualities of others? Kathelijn Geerts who is responsible for the track on behalf of nyenrode: “This was a very intelligent group of high school students who were open to development. They have learned to value differences. do not exclude other people, instead welcome the differences.”

The conference was organized by the Management Control Association in cooperation with nyenrode. lecturer and co-organizer Anne-Marie Kruis: “in short, Management Control is about steering and motivating people within organizations, from the top management to the shop floor. it is about measuring and numbers, but also about the question what can we do with this information. The sentiment at the conference was very positive towards one another: thinking about solutions together and helping each other with research. what i enjoyed the most is seeing all these happy faces of people who were clearly enjoying both the conference and the beautiful surroundings and the lovely weather.”

Sustainable business strategies for cities in Africanyenrode organized a symposium together with Cordaid and AT osborne on sustainable busi-ness strategies for cities in Africa on 3 december 2013. representatives of the dutch business community, the government and the development cooperation sector came together at the symposium. in 2020, approximately two billion people all over the world will be living in slums. Many residents will not have access to city services such as clean water, sanitary facilities, ener-gy, housing and employment. whereas the cities in developing countries actually provide a good opportunity for new sustainable business models. The symposium was an illustration of the idea behind the Urban Change lab, an education program of the above-mentioned parties, which has been set up for future leaders. The Urban Change lab will start in 2014.

nyenrode is subject to the Higher education and research Act of 1993 in the netherlands, con-forming to a Bachelor-Master System, as well as to the european Credit Transfer System (eCTS).

nyenrode adheres to current national academic codes of conduct. in 2001, the dutch royal Scientific Academy (Koninklijke nederlandse Akademie van wetenschappen, KnAw) and the dutch organization for Scientific research (nederlandse organisatie voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek, nwo) issued a notice on scientific integrity and consequently established the national entity of Scientific integrity (landelijk orgaan wetenschappelijke integriteit, lowi). lowi implemented the Code of Conduct for Scientific Practice on January 1st 2005, intended for all universities in the netherlands. This code aims to address the societal demands and academic requirements for conducting scientific research. its goal is to enhance the awareness of what good scientific research and teaching entails.

To strengthen our commitment to responsible education, nyenrode became a signatory member of the United nations Principles for responsible Management education (PrMe) in 2011.

bENChMaRks aND aChiEvEMENts nyenrode has an excellent reputation and is very well-known as a brand. nyenrode’s distinctive features compared to other universities are the strong focus on the students’ personal development and on community building. our students are on a ‘development journey’, where character, skills and competencies are developed and trained and above all shaped. leadership is not about what you do, it is about who you are. A robust auditor has the guts to ask critical questions. nyenrode students should have the guts to make decisions,in difficult times as well, and this creates the difference that the world of business essentially requires: real leaders and entrepreneurs.

Nyenrode’s mission speaks of shaping managers and organizations. Every staff member at Nyenrode contributes to this. an education at Nyenrode provides more than just useful academic knowledge and research skills; it also provides for the development of social skills, personal development and above all the most important attitudes to successfully exercise a profession. in short, we focus on the head, heart and hands. together with a network for life, we rightfully promise students and participants a reward for life.

we like to see nyenrode as “a most comfortable place to be out of your comfort zone”. for part of the staff, this means that they ensure that students and participants acquire thorough knowledge and expertise. These are the professors and the program managers who develop the educational programs that open up new horizons. And of course the researchers that provide scientifically sound answers to the questions and issues that the business world and professionals are actually confronted with.

other members of the staff ensure that nyenrode is “a most comfortable place”. in our beautiful locations (the campus in Breukelen and the new location 5 Keizers in Amsterdam), a large number of staff (from service desk to program support and from administration and iCT to the gardeners) ensure that students and participants can focus on the program that they are following. And of course: whoever is “out of their comfort zone” is vulnerable and needs a good atmosphere, personal attention and good facilities. we provide for all of this together!

As an employer, nyenrode stands for growth. Growth of employees is one of the most important preconditions for nyenrode to be ranked among the european top 20 business schools. with a relatively small and flat organization, there are no long career development routes at nyenrode, the main development opportunities are through job rotation.

Therefore, working at nyenrode is learning while enabling learning.

bEhiND thE CORPORatE CuRtaiNRonald Emons on organizational changes

behind the curtain, interesting changes have been made both on the university board level and on the foundation board level, closely following the Dutch Corporate governance Code. in addition, the aNbi status has finally been implemented in the new Nyenrode foundation aNbi Policy plan.

The Board of the foundation and the Supervisory Board thoroughly reviewed the foundation’s governance structure. former partner of Allen & overy Steven Schuit, who is also a Professor of Corporate Governance and responsibility at nyenrode, proved to be most helpful in providing constructive input with regard to the Memoranda that finally led to the decision to do away with the two Boards and replace them by a one-tier foundation Board. Special attention was paid to seats on the foundation Board, to be nominated by nyenrode’s stakeholders VCV, Snf and the works Council. new Articles of Association and new By-laws, drafted by Allen & overy helped to open the way for more transparency in the decision-making processes in the nyenrode foundation.

As for the University, the executive Committee was abolished, and its members, the dean and the financial director, became members of the University Board (College van Bestuur). The University Board members are the only ones who are entitled to legally bind the University. Their tasks, and that of their Secretary, are laid down in the By-laws for the University Board. The approval list and the Articles of Assocation

have not been changed. More transparency in the decision-making process and with regard to the decisions themselves has been ensured by periodically publishing the decisions of the University Board on the intranet.

Governance applies or should apply to the nyenrode community as such. This means that it will not be sufficient to change things at the top and then just go about our business as usual. especially at nyenrode University, the changes should not remain limited to University Board and Academic Board levels, but once started at the top level, these should continue to be applied to the levels below the top.

As the rector Magnificus already stated, the whole framework of MoUs and contracts with external parties has been scrutinized thus enabling the organization to cancel contracts that are not of real importance to the University. it became very clear that an organization such as nyenrode requires rules that allow qualified people to do their jobs properly without being caught up in red tape situations.

Page 65: Nyenrode year overview 2013

63Nyenrode year overview 2013

in the total framework of the strategy discussions, specific attention has been paid to governance issues on the levels below the University Board, including future empower-ment by granting mandates, adapting the right and meaningful titling of function levels and so on. A project group consisting of the two Associate deans, the Head of faculty, the Head of Academic Services, the Head of HrM, the coordinator of Secretarial Staff, the ethics offi-cer and myself has issued a recommendation to the University Board on how to deal with these issues. Apart from that, the General Statute, the Code of Conduct and additional rules and regulations have been closely examined to determine whether they correspond with nyenrode now and in the future.

nyenrode booked a number of non-recurring gains in the year 2011-2012 as a result of which the operating costs amounted to less than normal. This concerned, among other items, the release of provisions and reservations that had been made in the past and that turned out to no longer be necessary. This has been included below in the item “financial income andexpenses”.Nyenrodeinvested€2.6millioninthepastyear,mainlyin the maintenance of buildings, furniture and equipment as well as in the development of iCT. The investments in previous years amounted to € 1.8 million (2011/12) and € 0.9 million (2010/11). Group equity increased to € 12.9 million with a solvency rate of 28%.

in the past year, the revenue of Nyenrode foundation increased by € 3.7 million to € 51.4 million. this increase was mainly realized by the executive education programs, the LEarN activities and the Nyenrode New business school in amsterdam. this growth was achieved with a relatively limited increase in the number of employees and in the external costs.

i was asked to become a member of the nyenrode Supervisory Board three years ago. i have been chairman of the Supervisory Board since december last year. As of 1 September 2013, i was appointed chairman of the new foundation Board. i think it is important for the organization to know who actually carries out the supervision. who are these people? what is their role?

Previously, as the Supervisory Board we only convened twice a year. i believe that in these times this is not often enough to really be involved in the organization. i do not believe that people are any worse than before; however, the temptations are greater. Therefore, supervision has become increasingly important in the business sector. we have seen many examples in the world where it has gone wrong. The role of the supervisor has become bigger and also more

ListENiNg tO what is gOiNg ON iN thE ORgaNizatiONClosing remarks by Jan Nooitgedagt

up to the summer of 2013, the governance structure of Nyenrode consisted of three levels: the supervisory board, the board of the Nyenrode foundation and the university board. as of september, we have simplified Nyenrode’s governance structure considerably. we havereducedthethreelayerstotwo:asupervisorybody(theFoundationBoard)andanexecutivebody(theUniversityBoard).RectorMagnificusMišaDžoljić is the chairman of the university board. professional. Therefore, you may also demand more from the supervisor than in the past.

in my opinion, you can only supervise institutions and companies that you understand and that you have knowledge of. To this end, you must have access to sufficient information. you do not only exercise supervision over financial matters you also exercise supervision over the people who work

in an organization. The best way to understand what is actually going on in an organization is to talk to people. This is why i try to spend at least a few days a month at nyenrode to speak with people. not only with the University Board but also with other faculty and staff members.

it is important for nyenrode that the University Board and the foundation Board maintain a good relationship with the alumni. Therefore the alumni association VCV has now been granted the right to nominate a candidate for the foundation Board. They have already exercised this right. The works Council has also been granted the same right. i hope that we will be able to appoint a candidate soon who has been nominated by the new works Council. in this case, it is the chairman’s responsibility to ensure that all members of the board are and remain equally important. The members of the foundation Board operate as one, thus confidential information must of course remain confidential within the Board.

The number of female students has grown considerably in recent years and female students now account for half of the student population in many of nyenrode’s programs. we are also working hard on diversity in the

various governance bodies. we have recently appointed a female member in the founda-tion Board, Tjarda Molenaar. And that was about time. But we have not achieved our goal yet. As far as we are concerned, we definitely should have more female board members. in the past year, Piero overmars stepped down as the President of the nyenrode foundation. However, he will continue to be involved in the nivra-nyenrode foundation, that aims for

stimulating the development of Accountancy & Controlling. in previous years, as the President of nyenrode foundation, he has brought together a good team. we have made considerable progress where quality is concerned. in addition, he also played an important role in the succession of rectors last year.

At present, we have a healthy financial position; however, we are not living in a world in which it is going extremely well from an economic point of view. from an economic perspective, 2012-2013 was one of the most difficult years that the netherlands has ever experienced. However, we are doing relatively well and have achieved a positive result. But we have to do a lot more to achieve the same result that we had in the past. Success for nyenrode depends largely on entrepreneurship. fortunately, many people at nyenrode see opportunities to take new initiatives.

A word of thanks goes out to the University Board and to all faculty and staff who have contributed to the result achieved in 2013.
