Programs!

On October 15th, Erica Plank will be teaching the technique for a cathedral window pillow using a spe-cial template. The cost of the workshop is $30 plus $14 for the template.

I entered my first quilt into a judged show by mistake! It was a challenge

for our 2012 guild show, and I assumed it was an exhibition only category. I

thought my work wasn’t good enough to be judged, so imagine my surprise

when the quilt won an Honorable Mention ribbon!

Then there was the judges’ evaluation. For months I wouldn’t open it. Re-

member that “not good enough” thing? Finally, when I started to work on

my next show entries, I got the nerve to open the silly thing. The judges had

liked the quilt, and were very complimentary. In fact, the only critique was

about striving to make my binding corners square. They definitely had a

point. In 2014, I (knowingly) entered 4 quilts-all with very nice binding.

Now is the time to start working on quilts for the 2016 show, but some of

you are saying, “I’m not having MY quilts judged”. So, let me share what I

learned from not only having quilts evaluated, but also being fortunate

enough to be present while the judges were working, before our last show.

Do NOT be intimidated by the idea of having your work judged. This is your

chance to get assessed by experienced, positive professionals. Any critique

will be intended to help you improve your skills. Treat it as a learning op-

portunity, and you will become a better quilt maker. In fact, just the process

of creating a show quilt encourages you to make seams match a little better

and those points a little pointier. Yes, it is nice to win ribbons, but really it’s

the quilts that do you proud. They’re what you bring to Show & Share, dis-

play in your home and gift to family and friends. They are what live on long

after the show is over.

So, check out the show categories, pick a design you love and get sewing.

That August turn in date will be here before you know it. Most of all- have

fun!

Quilts of Valor, Quilts for Kids, Project Linus, Bo's Place, Cinderella-Cinderfella , and Ft. Bend County Women's Center

are the charities we will be supporting this coming 2015-2016 year. Remember to stop by the table we have at guild

meetings to pick up a kit (or two) for machine piecing, quilting, binding or crochet.

I want to thank Candy Horsley on the splendid job she did this past year chairing the Community Service Committee.

With the help of CPQG's generous and hardworking members, I hope to continue on the path she set.

I also wanted to thank Elizabeth Barrow for the time and hard work she donated as the liaison for Project Linus. At

the evening meeting, Jennifer Pazicni gladly volunteered to be our new liaison for this worthwhile charity. Helen

Wilems will be assisting Jen with kitting the fleece blankets and quilts our members make for this charity. Thank you

Jen and Helen!

Barbara Young will continue to head up Quilts for Kids. Because of Barbara's hard work, we donated 117 quilts this

past year to Quilts for Kids. Way to go Barb!!

Many thanks go out to the members that piece, quilt, bind, crochet and label our donations. I appreciate the generosity

Quilt Show News Our first meeting of the full show committee was a great success with 18

members attending.

We are excited to announce Veronica Cox as our show guest artist. Veroni-

ca has been a popular speaker at our guild meetings, and will be a wonder-

ful addition to the show. A list of her classes will be coming soon.

The Category List and Rules and Regulations for quilt entries are posted on

the website, under “Quilt Show 2016”. ALL guild members are encouraged

to enter at least one quilt in the show. It’s an excellent way to show off your work and have

your quilt(s) evaluated by positive, professional judges; plus your entry fees support the guild

by helping to defray the costs of putting on the show. There will be a non-judged Exhibition On-

ly category, (entry fee applies), which would be great to display your special or heirloom quilts.

Next month, we will begin taking orders for our quilt show themed T-shirts. Shirts will be

available on a pre-order basis only. More details to follow.

There are still a few committee chair jobs needing to be filled, so please contact one of the team

leaders if you’d be willing to help in a specific area.

Quilt Show News By Barbara Wall

Our guild has once again been asked to participate in several of the service activities that the First United Methodist Church sponsors. Below is information on the things we are being asked to help with. FUMC has been very generous in allowing us use of church space, free of charge, for our meet-ings, workshops and, most recently, QOV sew-ins. Please support these worthwhile projects.

Seafarer's Christmas Boxes: This year, knitted scarves w ill be included w ith the other items in the boxes. Each scarf is knitted with one skein of 5 ounce yarn in a "manly" color. Cast on 25 stitches and knit until the 5 oz. skein is finished. Their goal is 150 scarves by Nov. 20, so any contri-butions would be greatly appreciated. Please bring in scarves by the Nov. 19 meeting.

Day School Food Drive: Non-perishable food items, personal hygiene items, toilet paper, soap, toothpaste, dish liquid, etc. will be collected through our November 4 meeting. There will be a collec-tion box at the meetings.

Armstrong Elementary School Support: The school is in need of snacks to offer the children during the afternoon as a pick-me-up since several grade levels have early lunch periods, (large size boxes of Gold Fish, Animal Crackers, Ritz Crackers- no peanut butter please). There will be a collection box at the meetings through November.

Want to Learn to Use Electric Quilt? Did you buy the Electric Quilt program years ago anticipating that you would be able to design your own quilts only to find yourself frustrated by all the tools and screens? Come join the Electric Quilt bee which meets twice monthly just and get you comfortable designing blocks and quilts and playing 'what if?' with old familiar patterns. The EQ bee has been meeting for several years and welcomes newcomers. In January we will start over with the basics which makes this an excellent opportunity for you to join in on the fun. Don't worry about being confused about computer functions as we will help you through learning how to do things the easy way. To get started, you need to bring a laptop computer, with Electric Quilt 6 or 7 loaded. The Stitch version of the program can be used as well as MAC computers. We meet at the Bayland Community Center, 6400 Bissonnet which is between Beechnut and Hillcroft. Meetings start at about 9:30 on the first and third Wednesday mornings and conclude by noon. W e often go to a local restaurant for lunch following the session. For more information, or questions, contact Nancie Roach at [email protected]

Workshops By Martha Baldwin

At the October 7th evening meeting Susan Whatley will be presenting a lecture on “How Quilts are Judged for Quilt Shows”. This should be an interesting lecture just in time for us to know what we need to be looking for and focusing on for the quilts that we will be making for the Coastal Prairie Quilt Show next year. Susan is a NQA Certified Judge.

At the October 15th day meeting Erica Plank will be presenting a “Meet & Greet/Show & Tell” program. Erica is the Owner /Designer of Unseen Hands. She has been designing quilt patterns since 2009. Learn to Applique with Pat Sloan has recently been added to our library. Pat teaches you how to machine ap-

plique. She starts off with simple shapes and simple projects. First up are placemats and napkins appliqued with

a simple flower. Next are table toppers and a pillow cover. What you learn in these projects can then be combined

in a cute quilt entitled Walk in the Moonlight. If you would like to try your hand at machine applique check out

this book!

To see all the great books in our library go to www.librarything.com/catalog/cpqgoftx. If you find a book you would

like to borrow, e-mail me at [email protected] and I will bring it to the next meeting.

Guild members,

There will be a container on the sign in table at all our meetings for your comments, suggestions or great ide-

as you have for the guild. If you would like a personal response please include your phone number or e-mail

address. I will be available at guild meetings if you would rather talk face to face. I may also be reached

through my e-mail on the guild website or my phone, 832-528-2779.
