Market Review
RBI maintained status quo on policy rates in its Aug-16 Monetary Policy.
Correspondingly, key rates stand unchanged – Repo rate at 6.50%, Reverse Repo Rate at 6% and MSF Rate at 7%.
August CPI inflation cooled off sharply to 5.05% as against 6.07% in Jul-16. However, Core CPI edged up marginally to 4.72% from 4.64% in the previous month. Bucking analysts’ estimates, India’s 1st quarter GDP for 2016-17 came in at 7.1 per cent, compared to 7.9 per cent in the previous quarter. Declining private investment and a perceived decline in indirect tax collection, leading to higher subsidies are estimated to be the primary causes of the decline. The month of September saw record surplus liquidity including a surprise OMO G sec purchase announcement by the new RBI governor. We saw record FII purchases (including updation of masala bonds purchases) in debt market which could have led to boost in liquidity too.
INR ended the month of Sep at 66.57 against the USD.

Peace of mind and Wealth Creation ideas for long term
Karvy Insights brings to you investment wisdom to help our investors make sound investment decisions and reach their goals faster. These inputs may not help you become wealthy in a short span of time, but they would definitely give you peace of mind and a roadmap for your financial journey.
How much insurance do you need?
» Typically, insurance is purchased as a tax-saving instrument - is it enough to cover all our liabilities and provide for our families? What’s a good way of figuring out how much insurance you need? Insurance needs change as you move on in life. Amount of insurance needed for a single individual with no liabilities, or for a person with children or a home loan to repay, will not be the same.
» Simple back-of-the-envelope calculation should indicate that value of your insurance policy should be 15 to 20 times your current income. The lower figure (15 times) would mean more frugal living while the upper limit (20 times the current income) anticipates a more lavish lifestyle.
» In other words, priorities in life determine your insurance needs. Therefore, sum insured should be equal with your future needs.
» Another way understand the life insurance requires you to ask:: ‘how much money would your family need in an unfortunate circumstance of your untimely demise?’ Your family’s future needs can be determined by posing the following questions:
» How much money would be needed at death to meet immediate obligations?
» How much future income would be needed to sustain the household?
» How much would the family need in the more distant future - for children’s education, marriage, etc?
» The difference between your family’s current and future needs and the resources in place to meet those needs will determine the amount of life insurance you need.

CAN NRIs INVEST IN MUTUAL FUNDS IN INDIA?
Most of us realize the role mutual fund investments play in helping us achieve our future financial goals such as child’s education and marriage, marriage, retirement and so on. The same is true for non-resident Indians (NRIs), who have been showing tremendous interest in investing in Indian mutual funds. However, a lot of questions remain unanswered. Let us try to answer some.
1) Can NRIs invest in mutual funds through foreign currency?
This is one of the most common questions. Mutual funds do not allow investment in any currency other than the rupee. Hence, the investment has to be done from rupee-denominated accounts such as...
2) Can POA invest in mutual funds on behalf of an NRI?
Yes, a POA (Power of Attorney) holder is allowed to invest in mutual funds on behalf of an NRI...
3) Is there any kind of RBI/SEBI approval needed for the NRIs/PIOs/FIIs to invest in Mutual Funds?
No, there is no such regulation mandated by either the SEBI or RBI which restricts NRIs towards investment in mutual funds.
4) What about KYC for NRIs?
Those NRIs who are not know-your-customer (KYC)-compliant can get their KYC done in order to invest in mutual...

Story of The Month
A carpenter went home after shutting down his workshop. While he was gone, a poisonous snake entered his workshop.
The snake was hungry and hoped to find its supper lurking somewhere within. It slithered from one end to another and accidentally bumped into a double-edged metal axe and got slightly injured.
In anger and seeking revenge, the snake bit the axe with full force. What could a bite do to a metallic axe? Instead the snake’s mouth started bleeding.
UNCONTROLLED REACTION
Sometimes when we get angry, we try to cause harm to others. But as time passes by, we realise that we have caused more harm to ourselves. It is not necessary that we react to everything. Step back and ask yourself if the matter is really worth responding or reacting to.
Out of fury and arrogance, the snake tried its best to strangle and kill the object that was causing it pain by wrapping itself very tightly around the blades.
The next day when the carpenter opened the workshop, he found a seriously cut, dead snake wrapped around the axe blades.
The snake died not because of someone else’s fault but faced these consequences merely because of its own anger and wrath.
