the country and help touch the lives of those most vulnerable.
smiles Across America® reached 350,000 children in 2011 and has
sealed 428,000 teeth—well on our way to meeting our commitment
to America’s Promise to seal Two Million teeth by 2020.
The Wisdom Tooth Project® secured major funding to do research
which resulted in blueprints to build a web portal for care advisors that
will be used by an estimated 40 million Americans.
The Campaign for Oral Health Equity educated 300 million people
through multi-faceted communication strategies, such as our annual
Fall for Smiles® campaign.
NsTEP® (National spit Tobacco Education Program) educated
350,000 children and families about the danger of smokeless
tobacco at little league World Series in August.
In 2012 and beyond, we will continue to touch the lives of
millions of Americans through collaborations we build and with
support of donors like you.

* Service Completed in 2011
impacted over 350,000 children in 35 states
Provided over $2.1 million in grant funding since
the program’s inception in 2004
Sealed over 428,000 teeth on our way to sealing Two
million teeth for more than 500,000 children by 2020
“OHA provided funding for a pilot dental sealant program. matched by a local
Walmart Foundation grant, the gift leveraged support for a public-private partnership that
includes the Health care Network of Southwest Florida and the ronald mcDonald care
mobile, in partnership with the University of Florida college of Dentistry. Approximately
1,000 dental sealants were placed in six low-income schools located in collier county.”
—Teresa A. Dolan, DDS, mPH, Professor and Dean,
University of Florida college of Dentistry
smiles Across America® (sAA) continued to expand in 2011. CHs Healthcare,
which provides care to more than 48,000 patients annually, now offers a school-
based sealant program in collier county, Fl. Oral Health Across the Commonwealth
expanded from Boston to provide dental services to 1,000 more children in
Springfield, mA. Community Health Center of southeast Kansas extended its
program to schools in two additional counties, designated as dental health
professional shortage areas. in Apache Junction, AZ, smiles Across Pinal County,
an initiative of A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, now
provides preventive services to students at four schools.
Winners of the first-ever sAA Innovation Grant used the funds for a variety of
projects, including development of an oral health curriculum for local teachers and
filming a public service announcement. OHA also offered technical assistance to
partners through a Share & learn conference designed for peer-based education,
and initiated a bi-monthly webinar series with guest presentations from non-profit
and corporate partners.
6
The Wisdom Tooth Project® (WTP) received a boost in 2011 through a grant
from the DentaQuest Foundation. OHA was able to begin the development of the
WTP web portal, which will connect older Americans and their caregivers with
online oral health resources. Our progress in 2011 included commissioning a focus
group through Harris interactive that facilitated conversations with caregivers
about the importance of oral health for the older adult in their lives and how they
view their role.
OHA also engaged an expert panel to advise on the portal’s focus and content, and
a corporate task force to provide input on technology and marketing. We initiated
demonstration projects with the University of Florida College of Dentistry and
the University at Buffalo school of Dental Medicine. Thanks to a grant from
the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation, OHA teamed up with Dr. ruth goldblatt,
a dental geriatrician who will serve as a consultant in the state of connecticut,
where OHA is piloting the concept of local Wisdom Tooth Project web pages.
“Duplicating efforts is frustrating and costly, and OHA’s Wisdom Tooth Project
provides a way that we can become more efficient at helping people help themselves by
connecting caregivers and patients with accurate and timely resources to improve and
maintain healthy mouths. i work with OHA because i feel it is a way to make a difference
on both a local and national level.”
—ruth goldblatt, DmD, FAgD, FASgD, DABScD
regional consultant to the Wisdom Tooth Project, Farmington, connecticut
OHA’s Wisdom Tooth Project web portal aims
to reach over 40 million care advisors
in 20 years, nearly 25% of the U.s. population will
be age 60 or older. That’s over 90 million older adults
every day in the U.S. 10,000 adults reach age 65
8
Fall for Smiles generated 300 million audience
impressions educating the public about oral health
The campaign was mentioned in over 560+ articles
OHA worked with over 50 partner organizations,
associations and corporations that helped spread
oral health messages to Americans across the nation
Oral Health America and the Dental Trade Alliance hosted 100 oral
health supporters in September 2011 on capitol Hill to address the impact of oral
health disparities on our nation’s health. U.S. Senator Ben cardin (D-mD) was
recognized for his leadership in bringing about policy changes that are helping to
reduce disparities and increase children’s access to dental care in maryland and
throughout the country.
Fall for Smiles®, OHA’s annual communications campaign, educates the public
about the importance of healthy mouths. Through our annual public opinion
survey, OHA found that more than one-third (35 percent) of those who regularly
visit the dentist cut back in 2011. The survey, sponsored by Oral Healthcare can’t
Wait® and Plackers®, showed that 17 percent of parents reported their child
had missed at least one day of school due to dental related pain or illness. The
campaign generated 300 million audience impressions about the importance of
regular dental visits, brushing and flossing, avoiding tobacco, and eating a healthy
diet to maintain good oral health.
“Twelve-year-old Deamonte Driver of Prince george’s county, maryland, lost
his life after a tooth infection because our system failed him. inequalities continue to
exact an enormous toll but the status quo is changing with 2009’s reauthorization of
the children’s Health insurance Program (cHiP), the Affordable care Act (AcA), and
the newly elevated National institute on minority Health and Health Disparities. We’re
eliminating gaps in coverage, expanding access, and increasing research to improve
overall quality of health care.”—Ben cardin, United States Senator from maryland

NsTEP®
NATIONAL sPIT TOBACCO EDUCATION PROGRAM
The winner of the 2011 NsTEP® (National Spit Tobacco education Program)
slogan contest, 11 year-old louie lafakis a little league player from Basking ridge, NJ,
had a personal reason for entering the contest – this own father has used smokeless
tobacco since his high school baseball days. Despite many failed attempts in the past,
John lafakis was inspired by his son’s slogan, “Make a great play ... throw tobacco
away,” and decided to try quitting again, hopefully for the last time. in addition to
the annual slogan contest, NSTeP supported the campaign to ban tobacco use in
major league Baseball, Knock Tobacco Out of the Park. Players ultimately agreed
not to carry tobacco packages and tins when fans are in the ballpark, or use tobacco
during pregame or postgame interviews and at team functions.

OUr DONOrS
“I began my involvement with OHA as
i began my career in the dental industry. i was
impressed by the way OHA is able to connect with
congressional leaders and those who are able to
positively impact oral health. The NSTeP® program
was of particular interest to me since it brought
attention to a problem that, up until then, had
received little public attention.”
