Lean sIX sIGMa seRIes

This series of nine workshops is being offered in partnership with BCIT. Lean Six Sigma is a managerial concept combining the problem-solving techniques of Lean and Six Sigma. Both Lean and Six Sigma focus on reducing unproductive processes in organizations with the goal to improve operational effectiveness. Six Sigma strives to improve both quality of service and process outputs by identifying and eliminating the causes of defects and minimizing variability. Lean, also known as Lean Manufacturing, is a process-improvement methodology that identifies and eliminates non-value-adding activities in business processes.

Introduction to Lean This one-day module is appropriate for organizations with little to no previous experience with Lean concepts. It will provide a broad, overall understanding of what Lean is and what it can do for your company. This includes understanding and identification of the principles of customer-based value, value analysis and how to eliminate waste in your company.Course code: MGR 332KEL: Sep. 23, Tue, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM CRN: 70627$299 (+ GST)

5s housekeeping strategies This one-day module will give you the information you need to participate in implementing the 5S method of housekeeping for your organization. Learn what the 5 Pillars of the Visual Workplace are and why 5S is the cornerstone of productivity improvement activities and a good starting point for your company’s Lean journey.Course code: MGR 334KEL: Oct. 28, Tue, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM CRN: 70631$299 (+ GST)

Process/Value stream MappingThis practical, hands-on workshop will introduce participants to both Process Mapping and Value-Stream Mapping techniques. These techniques enable modelling of complex business processes. Through modelling, we see where waste occurs, where hand-offs and delays take place and where bottlenecks exist. These remarkably valuable tools are starting points for any process improvement activity. In this workshop, participants will apply mapping techniques to real processes from their own workplace.Course code: MGR 333KEL: Nov. 18, Tue, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM CRN: 70630$299 (+ GST)

empowering Lean Managers In this one-day module you will learn how to achieve significant productivity gains in your company by applying current and proven ways to lead employees. The major sources of competitive advantage in today’s business world lie not in new technology, but in the dedication, quality of commitment, and competency of employees. The results of employee energy and creativity - human capital - are a company’s most important resource. How you empower your employees and teams is critical to company survival in the new and competitive Lean world.Course code: MGR 335KEL: Dec. 2, Tue, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM CRN: 70632$299 (+ GST)

Work Flow design This module will explore the concepts of work flow design that lead to efficiencies related to just-in-time delivery and continuous improvement. The following topics will be discussed: establishing work cells with self-directed, problem solving work teams; the difference between push and pull manufacturing processes (Kanban system); the benefits of lot-size reduction; visual controls - developing work areas or processes as self-explaining, self-regulating and continuously improving; the use of schedule boards, problem reporting, work load plans, and “ahead and behind” charts; and the PDCA model, Standard work and 5S system for work place cleanliness and organization.Course code: MGR 336KEL: Jan. 20, Tue, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM CRN: 80183$299 (+ GST)

Keeping Continuous Improvement alive - KaizenIf you are looking to achieve quick and effective resolution to a process problem in your business, a Kaizen Event may be just the thing. The goal of a Kaizen Event is to develop solutions to important problems and implement them, all within a few days. Some applications include reduced cycle time, increased throughput, reduced error rates, shortened lead times and redesigned processes.Start with some training in the basic tools of quality and some Lean techniques, then tackle a problem and develop solutions, implement improvements, and assess the impact. Kaizen Events form a part of your continuous improvement strategy, complement Lean implementations, and help speed up the problem-solving process.Course code: MGR 338 KEL: Mar. 17, Tue, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM CRN: 80185$299 (+ GST)

theory of Constraints The Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a management paradigm that views any manageable system as being limited in achieving more of its goals by a very small number of constraints. There is always at least one constraint, and TOC uses a focusing process to identify the constraint and restructure the rest of the organization around it. The underlying premise of theory of constraints is that organizations can be measured and controlled by variations on three measures: throughput, operational expense, and inventory. Throughput is the rate at which the system generates money through sales. Inventory is all the money that the system has invested in purchasing things which it intends to sell. Operational expense is all the money the system spends in order to turn inventory into throughput.Course code: MGR 339 KEL: Apr. 28, Tue, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM CRN: 90057$299 (+ GST)

six sigma Does your organization spend time, energy and money resolving problems that seem to keep repeating themselves? Have you reached a plateau with initiatives such as Lean Manufacturing and want to drive your improvements to the next level? Six Sigma is the approach you can use to address these issues and move towards increased bottom-line performance. Six Sigma is a structured, disciplined problem-solving approach that allows companies to design and monitor everyday business activities in ways that minimize waste and resources while increasing customer satisfaction. It is a system that guides companies into making fewer mistakes in everything they do. Whether your business environment is in the industrial manufacturing sector or in the commercial service sector, Six Sigma will allow you to discover and address the underlying cause of process problems to ensure that those same problems do not recur. This workshop will provide an overview of the Six Sigma methodology, how you can apply Six Sigma techniques to solve on-going problems, how Six Sigma enhances on-going improvement initiatives, and will enable you to embark on the Six Sigma pathway.Course code: MGR 343KEL: May 26, Wed, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM CRN: 90058$299 (+ GST)

Project Procurement This one-day workshop will provide project managers with the ability to manage the procurement process by planning, conducting, monitoring and making adjustments to plans as required. Complex projects, especially those requiring specialized skills or goods, often require the project manager to acquire these resources from outside the organization. The acquisition of these resources is called procurement. It is the project manager’s responsibility to ensure all goods and services required for successful completion of a project are acquired, even if the organization has a procurement or purchasing department.

Historically, procurements were simple, consisting of a purchase order with quantity and price giving us a total cost. Today, as a result of globalization, we can procure labour, specialized subject knowledge, equipment and almost any part of the project scope that we do not wish to “make.” Procurement is becoming increasingly complex, yet is essential for the success of many projects and as a project manager it should be part of your tool kit.Course code: MGR 344KEL: Mar. 18, Wed, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM CRN: 80186VER: Feb. 4, Wed, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM CRN: 80189$350 (+ GST)

Learn a systematic approach for identifying risks, how to analyze the risks for potential impact on the project, how to create strategies to mitigate risks, how to apply risk response measures, and how to establish procedures for monitoring, controlling, and reporting on risks. This workshop is based on the risk management practices outlined in “A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)” fifth edition published by the Project Management Institute.Course code: MGR 131KEL: Feb. 18, Wed, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM CRN: 80188VER: Mar. 24, Tue, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM CRN: 80191$350 (+ GST)
