The farm offers a variety of products and incorporates both conventional and non-conventional agricultural practices. Wine serverAn ideal course for those wanting to take

their knowledge about wine to the next level. This 12-hour course was developed in consultation with industry and identifies why B.C. wines are unique. It covers how to recommend and serve wine

and includes information and practice in uncorking, tasting, identification of wines, and wine label lore. The history, geography and location of wineries and vineyards will be covered along with the identification of local attractions and community services. This course will be held at Benoit’s Wine Bar. airbrakesThis course has been designed to prepare students for the ICBC written examination for an air brake endorsement to operate air brake equipped highway vehicles. Emphasis is placed on safe operating procedures, and ongoing maintenance for air brake systems. This course includes one day of theory and an airbrake pre-trip hands-on practical portion. Upon successful completion of this course, students have 30 days to write their air brake endorsement exam at the ICBC Driver Services Centre. Please note, there is an ICBC $15 exam fee which is payable by the student directly to ICBC. Prerequisite: Students must have a valid BC driver’s license. Basic accounting CertificateIf you’re working to keep the books for a small business, or if you are interested in an entry-level accounting job, this 66-hour hands-on program can provide you with the necessary expertise. It also provides a good foundation for those who are planning to study computer-based accounting such as Simply Accounting.

This two-module program covers accounting concepts, generally accepted accounting principles, the rules of debit and credit, the accounting cycle, using the general journal to record transactions

and posting to the general ledger. Preparation of financial statements, periodic adjustments, and year-end books are also covered.

Basic security trainingIf you would like a career as a security guard, security alarm installer, locksmith, private investigation or armoured car guard, you’ll need to start your training with Basic Security Training. traffic Control Person CertificationThis two-day traffic control course is a provincial regulatory requirement and certification is valid for three years. Successful completion of this standardized training course will satisfy the requirement of WorkSafe BC for those wishing to work as a Traffic Control Person. Participants will experience both classroom and practical instruction. Students are to bring a passport photo (must be authentic passport paper quality) in order to receive photo qualification required through the Construction Safety Network. transport of dangerous Goods (tdG)The Transportation of Dangerous goods Act states that no person shall handle, offer for transport, or transport dangerous goods unless they are trained or working under the direct supervision of a person who has been trained. This course is intended for individuals involved in the transportation of dangerous goods - manufacturers, warehouse personnel, shippers, drivers, couriers and transportation managers. Workplace Hazardous Materials information systems (WHMis)To comply with the regulations of (WHMIS), companies which use or store controlled products are required by the Workers’ Compensation Board to ensure all staff receive appropriate training on WHMIS. This course covers the interpretation of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs), labeling, procedures for safe handling use and storage and emergency procedures for specific hazardous products. Instructor Bio: Megan MaclureMegan started cooking on an open fire in Banff National Park, riding around on horseback and packing food on the backs of mules, and hasn’t looked back since. She has almost 15 years of camp cook experience, from backcountry cook to being a catering operations manager. Her experience includes managing all catering operations for three military camps for the 2010 Winter Games and

overseeing the entire catering operations at six difference locations with over 1000 people. Flying in groceries by helicopter, training new staff and working through complex camp logistics is what occupies a lot of her time these days. In her off time, she loves spending time with her daughter and dog, as well as Downhill Mountain Biking, snowboarding, camping (just can’t get enough camp) and running.

education assistant Certificate - January 2012This 447-hour program prepares students to work as Education Assistants in a school setting with an emphasis on working as part of a team. The Education Assistant works under the instructional supervision of classroom teachers and employment supervision of other School and District level staff. Duties include helping to implement the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that has been developed by the team for individual children with exceptionalities in the areas of: cognitive abilities, physical challenges, severe health issues, behavioral challenges, autism and related disorders.

This program includes both theoretical studies and practical applications in such areas as understanding school curriculum and developing strong observation and related skills while working with children who have severe challenges. As well, it will encourage the imagination and creative ability of each student in the program.

graduates of this program are well prepared to facilitate and support the learning and independence of children who require extra assistance in meeting their educational goals.

Admission Requirements:• BC secondary school graduation, or

equivalent, or 19 years of age and out of secondary school for at least one year as of the first day of classes.

• Computer Fundamentals or equivalent.• A minimum grade of 60% in one of

English 12, Technical and Professional Communications (TPC) 12, or an equivalent Provincial level ABE English course; or a minimum score of 24/40 (level 4) on the language Proficiency Index (lPI) test. Note: Communications 12 is not acceptable.

• Applicants must complete a criminal record check no more than three months before their date of admission. The form will be given to the applicants by the Continuing Studies office offering the program. Applicants who have a criminal record and plan to seek a pardon are advised that this can be a lengthy process and that they should initiate the criminal record check procedure at their local police department at least six months prior to application. special needs Worker Certificate - september 2011The Special Needs Worker Certificate program provides training for people who support children and adults with disabilities in the community. To meet the demands of the work and to provide quality support and services, graduates must have a strong foundation of knowledge, skills and abilities including an understanding of the values, attitudes and beliefs of community living. Emphasis is placed on understanding and practicing the community living philosophy and utilizing a person centered approach. graduates of this program will be prepared to practice professionally as part of a team in entry level positions in homes, workplaces, educational, recreational and social settings. This program consists of eight courses totaling 288 hours of instruction and lab time. There are two 60-hour field experiences with 20 hours of seminars.Students must pass each component with a minimum grade of 60% to receive a certificate.

Birch tapping and syrup ProductionBe introduced to “sugaring off” boreal forest style. Tapping birch sap is considered “agro-forestry” and the sap itself is a “non-timber forest product” (NTFP). With the massive distribution of birch across Canada, coupled with a growing interest in alternate crop agriculture, local food production, food security, and the small number of commercial producers operating today, the birch syrup industry has potential for expansion. The workshop will focus on tree and sap physiology, backyard and commercial supplies and equipment, legislation and marketing, food safe production, culinary uses, and an introduction to other products that can be made from the birch tree. As a form of small lot agriculture, an emphasis will be made as to how birch tapping fits into healthy community sustainability and economic diversification. Instructor bio: Gordon Hiebert Gordon is a Certified Permaculture Designer and former energy efficient home builder. He has traveled and studied in Central America, New Zealand and Australia to gain a greater understanding of global sustainability. He combines his passion and knowledge of energy efficiency and regenerative design to deliver courses that are empowering, inspirational and positive.

A six week program designed to prepare students for employment in the construction field. You will be introduced to power tool use, framing, insulation, measuring and cutting in addition to practical project work. Students will also receive certificates in Occupational First Aid and WHMIS.

The Adult Academic and Career Preparation (AACP) program is designed for adults who have not achieved the education levels necessary to allow them to reach career goals. No specific academic background is required although some courses do have prerequisites. Two delivery modes are available. AACP courses are now tuition free for all students. Some material costs and Okanagan College Development and Education Technology fees apply. Financial Aid may be available to cover costs of fees and materials for students in financial need. Ask the AACP Coordinator about ABESAP funding.

Our ProgramThe English as a Second language Settlement Assistance Program (ESlSAP) at Okanagan College is a one-to-one volunteer tutoring program. We assist immigrants to settle in Canada and to gain the cultural knowledge, language and literacy skills necessary to succeed. The program runs from September to June.We offer:

• Free one-to-one English language tutoring• Free weekly ESL classes• Monthly field trips• Access to ESL software

Who Can Use the Program Services?• Canadian immigrants who are 17 years or older who speak beginner to

intermediate level English.One-to-One TutoringVolunteers meet with learners weekly for 1.5 to 2 hoursThey help learners:

• Improve their English language skills• Learn about cultural norms in Canada• Learn about available services in Revelstoke

Free Weekly ESL Classes• Are multilevel• Teach settlement topics• Are a chance to meet other newcomers• Include monthly field trips or speakers

Access to Software and SupportOur students have access to:

• ESL software, and support in our staffed Centre of Learning• Audio tapes and materials for self-study.

VolunteeringBecoming a Volunteer Tutor is a great way to develop new skills, get involved and make a difference in the life of a Canadian newcomer. We provide ongoing support, resources, and training.

The Pathways to Success program ran from April to August 2011. Funded by Service Canada, the Program assisted eight participants with self-identified permanent disabilities living in Revelstoke. Four weeks of classroom-based employability and life skills training, including certificates such as OFA1, FoodSafe and WHMIS, helped participants build the confidence and knowledge needed to enter or re-enter the workforce. Many of the participants remain in their work experience placements, and all participants have increased their employability for the future.
