Arena Details About our Building:
Opened in October 2011, the Compton Family Ice Arena anchors the south edge of campus, adjacent to the Joyce
Center and west of the Irish track and field facility. The state-of-the-art arena houses two ice rinks and was designed
to support the Notre Dame hockey programs and those in the local community. The facility was made possible by a
generous lead gift from Kevin and Gayla Compton, who also own the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League
(NHL).
With its eye-catching, barrel-vaulted roof and bow trusses, the main arena has two levels with a capacity of 5,000 -
both seated and standing room combined--with the majority of the seats a comfortable, chair-back style.
The student section and hockey band seating are located on the west end of both levels. O'Brien's, the exclusive club
for Fighting Irish Hockey games, is located on the upper level, as well as general admission seating and the media
center. Open concourses on both levels provide ample standing room. The Charles W. "Lefty" Smith Jr. Rink, the NHL
-size playing surface of the main arena, honors the first coach in the Notre Dame hockey program. The Olympic-size
rink can be divided into two smaller rinks to be used by the Irish Youth Hockey League (IYHL) for their USA Hockey
Athlete Development Model (ADM) practices. The facility is also used for ND club hockey, ND synchronized skating,
youth figure skating, public skating, and intramural broomball. The building also houses numerous offices, locker
rooms, and training facilities.
“Lefty” Smith Rink:
Total Capacity: 5,022 (4,500 Arena Seating - 1,100 Bleacher Seating)
O'Brien's: 250 seat premium club area
Playing Surface: 200' x 90' (5’ wider than traditional NHL size rink)
Scoreboard: 15' x 15' Daktronics 4-sided center hung scoreboard with 8'4" x 13'6" 10mm video displays with integrated auxiliary displays and fascia boards
Olympic Rink:

Game Day Procedures Locker Room Policy:
Locker rooms will be available ONE HOUR prior to the start of your ice time and you are expected to be out of the
locker room 30 MINUTES after the conclusion of your ice time. Some exceptions may apply if games are ahead or
behind schedule.
A Coach or Team Manager will leave his/her keys in the Pro Shop or with the Greeter as collateral for the locker
room keys. By accepting the keys to the locker room, the coach/manager will accept full responsibility for the locker
room.
When entering a locker room to dress, if a team finds any trash or damage to the room, the Pro Shop attendant
must be notified immediately. The excuse of “it was like this when we got in here”, will NOT be accepted.
After all players are finished in the locker room, the coach/manager will lock the room and bring the key to the Pro
Shop. An arena employee will check the locker room. If the arena employee finds the locker room to be clean (free
of tape balls, bottles, candy wrappers, etc.) the coach/manager’s keys will be returned. If the locker room is not
clean or is damaged in anyway, the arena employee will either request that the coach/manager clean the room him-
self /herself until keys are returned. If the locker room is damaged, arena management will be notified and will work
with the tournament director to solve the problem.
Always lock the room and bathroom (shower door) when leaving the room unattended. Smoking, alcohol beverages,
and chewing tobacco are STRICTLY prohibited in the building and locker rooms.
Team Benches and Ice Entry/Exit:
* DO NOT ENTER THE ICE UNTIL THE ZAMBONI DOORS ARE COMPLETELY SHUT!*
“Lefty” Smith Rink
All teams will enter the ice through the visitors bench AT ALL TIMES. Do NOT enter the ice until the Zamboni doors
are completely shut! The home team will occupy the north bench (attached to the scorer’s and penalty boxes). The
visiting team will occupy the south bench.
Olympic Rink
All teams will enter the ice through their respective bench AT ALL TIMES. Do NOT enter the ice until the Zamboni
doors are completely shut! The home team will occupy the north bench (right side of the ice). The visiting team will
