Changes Thank you to all parents who have been very
understanding with the processes we have put in
place at Compton to makes sure all staff and
students are in a safe environment. Classrooms will
continue to open at 9am and close at 3:25pm. We
ask that parents undertake a quick drop off and pick
up and that they do not enter the classrooms at
these times. If you need to speak to a staff member,
please use Class Dojo or make an appointment. If it is
urgent, please see the office staff for assistance. As
restrictions ease, we will make changes to follow suit
– we will keep you informed along the way.
Library The Library will continue to be closed to parents/
caregivers/ family members at this time. Students will
still borrow in their borrowing time with Mrs Roulstone.
Illness Please continue to make sure that your child/ren are
not sick if they are attending school. Any sick child/

phone calls to check in to see how you and your

Lunch Day Popcorn If you are noticing strange popcorn kernels in your
child’s lunch box – do not worry! The 6/7s have been
putting drinks day popcorn directly in student’s lunch
boxes. This means no paper bags and it saves the
students from washing up so many plastic cups!

Happy Mothers Day to all our mums. Being a mum is one of the toughest things we will do and at the same time, one of the most rewarding and important jobs we will ever do. The task is to pick the positives out of the day and focus on them and use the negatives as stepping stones to make any adjustments that need to be made so that next time there is a more positive outcome in any given situation.

Transparent Jars
Mrs Mules is looking for donations of transparent screw top glass/plastic jars (that can preferably hold 400 ml or more of water). The jars are needed before week 5.
Any donations would be appreciated.

Bike and Road Safety Afternoon
This Friday our class along with our buddy class will be
taking part in a Bike and Road Safety Afternoon. We are
asking that your child brings along:
A fully functioning bike or small wheels (scooter,
roller skates, skateboard)
A helmet
The purpose of this afternoon is for students to
demonstrate their understanding of how to be safe on a
bike or small wheels. This term in Buddy Health we have
focused specifically on how to keep ourselves safe whilst
riding a bike and how riding a bike keeps us fit and
healthy.
The activities your child will be taking part in include:
1) Demonstrating how to safely use their small wheels.
2)Watching and observing others ride and identify
actions that promote safety and explore actions that
help make them safe.
3) Labelling parts of a bike.
4)Demonstrating protective behaviours and other
actions that help keep themselves safe by drawing and
labelling items you need to wear to if you are riding a
scooter, bike, skate board or roller-skates.
If you have any questions regarding the Bike and Road
Safety Afternoon, please send a Dojo message and we
will be happy to clarify any questions you have.
Looking forward to seeing your wheels on Friday.
Miss H and Miss Hamilton.

Around the Classrooms
Last week we finished our Big 4 Holiday Parks.
Students did a fantastic job and put in a lot of effort!
This week for Maths we move onto Fractions. Year
6s will be connecting fractions, decimals and
percentages as different representations of the same
number and solving problems involving the addition
and subtraction of related fractions. Year 7s will be
solving problems involving percentages and all four
operations with fractions and decimals.
In English we had been working on creating story
books. We read the book ‘Mig the Pig’ and students
then needed to create their own story involving an
animal and rhyming words. Students worked really
hard and created some great books!

UPPER PRIMARY 6/7
Over the past few weeks the Middle Primary class
have been working towards the following learning
intentions:
Reading
Each week we are focusing on a member of the
Pawsome Reading Gang! The Pawsome Reading
Gang is a team of canine characters, whose sole
purpose is to explore the reading content domains
and help our students improve their reading. So far
we have met Victor Vocabulary, Rex the Retriever
and Summarising Sheba.
Writing
In Writing we are learning how to recognise and write
compound and complex sentences. We have been
using fun acronyms like FANBOYS and
ISAWAWBUB to help us remember the co-
ordinating and subordinating conjunctions found in
these types of sentences.
Maths
In Maths we have been learning how to choose
appropriate strategies to solve problems involving the
four operations. We have also been working towards
solving time duration problems and converting
between 12-hour to 24-hour time.
Geography
In Geography we are studying the natural wonders of
the world and where they are located. We have
identified the continents of the world. Can your
family name the 7 continents of the world?
Arts
In Dance we have had lots of fun learning and
comparing different line dances such as the Boot
Scoot and the Nut Bush!
Miss Hamilton and the 4/5 Class
It is wonderful to see you all back for term 2. Even
though things may be different, everyone is happy
and safe at school.
During Maths, children were asked to write down the
numbers in the number plates of staff members cars.
Children worked in groups with assigned leaders.
Children wrote down the numbers and had to say the
numbers, put the numbers from biggest to smallest,
identify if numbers were odd or even and give reasons
why.
Children enjoyed the Challenge Task and Super
Challenge to this learning. Challenge question – Mrs
D could see two cars out her window and the numbers
equalled 253. What two numbers plates were the
cars? Super Challenge – Mrs D noticed another car
pull up and adding the number plates together it

equalled 2394. Which three number plates did she
see?
In Guided Reading groups are working on a new
Readers Theatre script. Groups choose their own
parts and have started working on their understanding
of text.
Mrs D and the 2/3 Class
Throughout weeks 1 and 2 we have been busy little
learners. In writing we have been focussing on deeply
looking at pictures and answering questions about
pictures to develop our inferential understanding. We
have then been using the same pictures we have a
deep understanding of and that we have noticed
many, many different things in as writing prompts, to
write narratives. Our Maths focus has been around
duration of time for the fortnight. We need to know
the days of the week, months of the year, seasons,
how long things take, order activities and be able to
work with digital and analogue clocks in o’clock and
half past times. We are working on correcting the
formation of our numbers in Handwriting and
evaluating designs in Design and Technology.

ANZAC DAY 2020
In the last newsletter we showed some images of how Compton Primary School commemorated Anzac Day
this year, despite the restrictions that resulted from the coronavirus outbreak.
Social distancing requirements meant that our school captains could not attend the dawn service at
Vansittart Park to lay a wreath on Anzac Day as is traditional.
These restrictions also made it impossible for school captains to attend the ceremony at the Boer War
Memorial on Bay Road to lay a floral tribute on behalf of the school community.
Instead, all school captains laid their tributes at Compton School’s newly constructed Garden of
Remembrance at different times during Anzac Day and spent a period of silent reflection.
This week our images showcase the contribution of school captains Will Norman and Olivia White in
honouring and remembering those who have served and are serving in the defence of the nation.
The school would like to thank our four school captains and their wonderful families for taking the time to
continue the school’s long tradition of remembering the individuals who have defended Australia and are
currently serving to protect us and our way of life.
Thank you everyone.
Shirley Roulstone
Olivia – When I laid the flowers I
felt proud to be representing our
school. It was a great honor to
be laying the flowers in our
Remembrance Garden. Thank
you mum for helping make the
flowers.
Will — Whilst I was laying the
flowers I felt sad for the men
and women who sacrificed their
lives for our freedom. This is
when we need to be respecting
the soldiers for who fought in
the war for our lives. Thanks Nan
for the flowers.
