Hel loI am John Roberts, the principal dentist and dental coach at Cote Royd Dental Practice.

I’ve been a dental practitioner since December 1981, set up my first practice in Rochdale in 1987 and have been based in Huddersfield since 2003.

I believe patients education and patient choice is paramount to building a partnership and trust between the patient and all of the team at Cote Royd Dental Practice.

The whole team looks to work with you to deliver a dental care journey you will appreciate and enjoy.

I understand the connection between someone’s dental health their previous dental care and how this could affect a person’s health.

I’ve been attending and teaching alternative medicine and dentistry courses in the UK, Europe and the USA and have incorporated my knowledge into my dental work though out the 25 years of my career.

The team are committed to improving and helping maintain a patient’s general dental health. Advice is given, from helping parents of new born babies on breast feeding and its influence in the growth of the jaws, to helping older people who want to avoid dentures or have a toxin free mouth.

There are treatments, protocols and materials we do not use at Cote Royd Dental Practice. This is because of our concerns about the safety to myself, our staff, our patients and also the environment. We offer dental alternatives to all of these or can refer patients if they chose treatments we do not provide.

The emphasis of the practice was on preventive and holistic dental care treating the patient’s wellbeing as well as their teeth.

PREVENTIVE CARE The basis of good oral health is preventing dental disease by, for example, appropriate oral hygiene measures, reducing the frequency of consumption of sugary foods and visiting the dentist when recommended. Your dentist and dental hygienist will give you lots of advice and support with caring for your teeth and gums, so influencing your overall health.

IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS We recognise that regular feedback helps us improve our services. So, if you have any comments or complaints about the care or service you have received at the practice please contact us and we will be happy to help.

▪ The initial consultation will provide you with a written report with a full range of treatments and costings.

▪ After a thorough clinical examination, the dentist will describe the treatment that he or she recommends, create an estimate of its cost and any alternatives that are available.

▪ Any relevant benefits and risks will be discussed. Where appropriate, the dentist will use photographs and other visual aids to help explain the treatment.

▪ Please do not hesitate to ask questions – we want to be sure that you fully understand and agree with the proposed treatment. The dentist can give you some information to take home, if you’re unsure of any aspect of the treatment.

▪ Most treatment is usually necessary to remove disease. To maintain oral health, you need to follow the advice your dentist or hygienist may give you relating to your treatments.

▪ Home care plays a major role in preventing further problems and that in turn will help you keep an attractive smile, eat in full comfort and should minimise the need for future treatment. If you do not understand your part in your care, please ask for an explanation.

▪ A written estimate and treatment plan will be provided for all treatment including dental hygienist appointments.

IN OUR TRE ATMENTpractice planningWE; ▪ Justify the trust our patients have

placed in us

▪ Listen to patients’ views and learn from them

▪ Communicate with patients in a courteous, friendly, professional manner

▪ Provide patients with the standard of care that we would expect to receive ourselves

▪ Make sure that patients receive full information about our services, their treatment and its cost

▪ Provide advice and treatment outside normal surgery hours where necessary

▪ Stand by the promises we make

▪ Refer patients for further professional advice and treatment where appropriate

▪ Are committed to ensuring that we keep our professional skills and knowledge up to date

▪ Accept we are humans not machines, if we do make mistakes we look to correct them, learn from them and not repeat them.

WE WILL; ▪ At all times respect our patients’ confidentiality

▪ Deal with every telephone call promptly – callers will not be asked to ‘hold’ without first finding out why the call has been made

▪ Call you back regarding specific enquires which can’t be answered at that time

▪ Provide patients with a treatment plan and estimate of costs for each new course of treatment

▪ No treatment will be undertaken without the patient’s full and specific consent

▪ Make patients aware of our policy for collecting fees. Requests for payment will always be made courteously

▪ Make the practice policy for dealing with complaints known to patients. All complaints will be treated sympathetically and according to the agreed procedures

▪ Provide the highest standards of infection control

▪ Provide any emergency treatment required during practice hours as soon as is reasonably practicable. Out of hours, an emergency rota will operate and details will be displayed at the entrance to the practice and recorded on the telephone answering machine. This information will be correct at all times. Practice Plan patients have additional benefits

IN RETURN, WE ASK OF YOU; ▪ Participate in your dental treatment, particularly any advice about

prevention and diet that we have asked you to continue at home

▪ Arrive on time for your appointment. Please give the practice at least 48 hours’ notice if you are unable to keep your appointment

▪ Treat our staff courteously; they will do their best to help meet your needs

oral hygiene treatments

Many people wonder why we insist on having dental hygiene visits first. The health of your gums is of paramount importance, as it will dictate the long-term success of our treatment. We can repair teeth but once the gums have failed then we are limited as to what treatment can be offered. More teeth are lost through gum disease than through actual tooth decay.

‘Because the understanding of periodontal disease has improved dramatically, treatment methods have been changing. Today the treatment of choice takes into account both local factors and systemic risk factors, and treats causes, not just effects. The goal is to help you achieve optimal long-term periodontal health and maximise your resistance to periodontal infection.’

Your hygienist will do a gross clean, show the areas where you have a problem and explain how you can improve your home care of these. He/she may examine your plaque using the microscope to see what is causing any problems and will also do several clinical tests and may write to you with a diagnosis and treatment plan’

The standard of hygiene treatment in this practice is very high. We see it as the foundation for good dental and general health.’

OF AMALGAM (MERCURY)

SAFEOUR

services

OUR PROTOCOL ▪ When we start removing amalgam during the procedure,

it is the mercury vapour that is most harmful to the patient and the dental team. Precautions and special equipment and techniques are used to ensure the safest working environment.

▪ Chlorella tablets are given to the patient to take before we begin amalgam removal. This ensures that any amalgam particles escaping the suction device will bind onto the tablets and pass safely through the patient’s system. We may also recommend Toxa-Prevent.

▪ Glasses protect from amalgam particles.

▪ Protective gowns and caps are worn to protect clothing and hair against transmission of amalgam particles.

At the practice we have a strict protocol in place which we follow when removing amalgam fillings.

▪ The dentist and nurse wear breathing apparatus and the patient wears a nosepiece that is supplied with medical air so nothing is inhaled.

▪ Gauze is placed in the mouth to absorb any traces of mercury. Raj, Gerry or Ellen may also use a rubber dam.

▪ A specialist suction device is used to ensure all traces of mercury are removed.

▪ A high-pressure drill with copious amounts of cool water and special burs are used to keep the mercury projection down

▪ The treatment room has two air filters systems that remove any trace of mercury vapour present in the air before, during and after treatment.
