Welcome to the long anticipated ONEWAY Product Catalog.Founded in1991, our family-owned company has consistentlyproduced the finest turning equipment available anywhere. The past year has been a very busy and exciting time asONEWAY transitions into its third decade of state-of-the-artengineering and manufacturing technology.

With that transition comes many new developments thatwe would like to share with you. We have purchased a

new green facility that will increase our manufacturingspace by over 100,000 square feet. This expanded capability keeps all of our manufacturing,

and more importantly, all of our workers employed in North America. And the new facility is veryenvironmentally friendly featuring solar heating and low energy lighting. Our goal is to protect jobsand the environment while expanding our production capabilities to increase inventory allowing us to

significantly decrease wait time for product delivery.ONEWAY founder Tim Clay has set a standard for quality and innovation that is unparalleled in ourindustry. Together we have brought sweeping changes to the craft of woodturning. As we moveforward, I will continue to collaborate with my father Tim in the design and engineering of newproducts that take both the hobbyist and professional woodturner to the next level.

Since our last catalog, we have introduced a variety of new products that will make your turningpursuits more productive and rewarding. As you page through this catalog look for new productshighlighted with a golden graphic.

Here’s a quick preview:n Our new 1236SD Sit Down Lathe gives woodturners the option to sit or stand while turning.n Woodturners have asked for a larger range of jaws for our chucks, and in our efforts to fill this

demand, we have introduced 2 new large sets of aluminum jaws for the stronghold chuck.n A cooperative effort between ONEWAY and Gary Sanders from Texas has allowed us to

manufacture and offer the new “Gary Sanders Light Stand”. This high quality, powder-paintedstand is a terrific and versatile way to add lighting to your work pieces, which is particularlyimportant for getting the finer details just right. And it fits with any lathe!

n A demand for a way to sharpen wider plane blades has resulted in the re-design of our everpopular Grind ‘n Hone jig. Enjoy simple, accurate grinding and honing with our fully adjustable jig.

As always, for the latest news and up-to-date information on our entire product line, feel free to visitour web site at www.oneway.ca or www.onewayeuropa.com.

Happy Turning!

FEATURES OF THE 2000 SERIES LATHES

THE DRIVE

AC Electronic Variable0 - 3000 RPM with Full Speed Reverse

n Drive packages are fully electronic with speed from

0 - 3000 RPMn 1.5, 2 & 3 Horse Power motors are available.

Excellent torque is available at as low as 30 RPMwith brute force available at as little as 100 RPM

n Speed ranges are 20 - 800/190 - 1900/305 - 3050.Changing range is easy and can be completed inunder 1 minute

n Drive motor is mounted directly below theheadstock in a base housing welded to the bed tube

n Drive pulleys are 3 step 10 groove poly V

n Controller comes programmed ready for use withbuilt-in ramp up/ramp down and dynamic braking. It’s a top quality drive, 220 volt, single phase AC - thevery best we could find

n Drive controls are mounted on a swinging pendantwhich can be moved to the headstock or tailstock foreasy and safe reach at all times

n Lathe runs extremely quiet

THE BED

Bedways and ribs are welded to a 10¾” dia. by5/16” wall tube. The assembly is stress relieved andprecision machined. Almost perfect torsional rigidity

is achieved many times more so than twin tube or castiron bed designs.

THE SPINDLEn The spindle nose, which holds the front bearings,

protrudes approximately 3” in front of the headstockallowing easy tool maneuvering when working onthe backside of a plate or bowl.

n The thread is M33 x 3.5 with a groove machined fora lock screw to allow full power forward and reverseturning. This design contributes to the safety of thismachine as it eliminates the possibility of chucksor faceplates accidentally unscrewing form thespindle.

n The spindle is the cartridge type and can be pulledfully assembled from the headstock by removing sixbolts. If a belt ever needs to be changed, it shouldtake less than ten minutes by even the most novicemechanic.

THE HEADSTOCKn Features a three bearing spindle. At the front, one

angular contact bearing is locked to the shaft witha clamp ring and lock nut. This minimizes radialand axial play of the spindle. The rear bearings floataxially to allow for heat expansion. All bearings aremaintenance free and lubricated for life.

n 6 position spindle lock and 7½° (48 position)indexing is standard (96 position is an availableoption).

n The spindle is 50 mm (2”) at max dia., 16” longand bored thru 5/8” dia. with a number 2 Morsetaper at the inboard. It is made from high alloysteel hardened and ground to precision toleranceof ±0.0003”.

THE TAILSTOCK n The Tailstock has an 1½” diameter quill with 4”

travel.

n The lead screw is a ¾” diameter 6 pitch acme thand the barrel has a 3½” bearing length.

n The 5” handwheel and high lead on this screwallows rapid in and out feeds for drilling.

n Precision design and a #3 Morse Taper for the ustronger live centers and larger drills.

n Super rigid Tailstock clamp is designed to elimiflexing under clamp pressure. This ensures thatclamp holds firmly while requiring no adjustmefor the life of the lathe and will retain the ease omovement of the Tailstock along the bed.

n Through hole is 5/16” (8 mm) dia. for lamp basesimilar drilling to be carried out.

n Handled for easy removal and adjustments.

BANJO / TOOLREST BASE

The Banjo is a radical new design that assures evpowerful locking anywhere on the bed (Patented)The sliding cam is supported by a cam support blwhich rests on a ledge machined in the toolrest baNote: Also available as an aftermarket item to upgrade your flatbed lathe. See Page 15.

THE TOOLREST

Made from ductile iron, it is stronger and lasts lothan cast iron. It is suitable for under and overhagrips. It is 14” long with a 1” diameter post.

Keith Burns Mesquite Hollow Form

Q. Why use a weldment instead of a casting when cast iron is much better at absorbing vibration?

A. Cast iron is better at absorbing vibration than steel but a casting is not as good at breaking up vibration as aweldment. A properly designed casting is a homogenous structure with a uniform cross section, much like abell. Any vibration will transmit easily through the casting because of the design limitations of a casting. A steelweldment can be designed with no regard for the shape required for the casting and the weld themselves act tobreak up vibration. For example, any belt vibration in our machine gets transmitted across the weld that holds

the motor box in place, then across the tube to rib welds and then across the rib to the bed weld. There are 3abrupt changes in material thickness in that vibration path. The vibration never stands a chance.

Q. What about vibration from the forces of the spinning wood?

A. Steel has a modulus of elasticity about 3 times greater than cast iron. For a similar weight of lathe, the steellathe will be 3 times stiffer.

SO WHY A WELDMENT?n Less Weightn More Strengthn Lower Vibration

A WORD OR TWO ABOUT WELDMENTS

“More than any other lathe I’ve used, theONEWAY seems to disappear as I’m turning.Tis allows me to concentrate on the workrather than overcoming the deciencies ofa machine.”

SERIES 2000CUSTOMIZATION OPTIONS

96 POSITION INDEXINGPART NO. 2946

All our large lathes come standard with 48 positioindexing which allows you to lock the spindle at e7.5 degrees. Sometimes you may want to be able have a finer increment for your indexed turnings. this end we offer 96 position indexing which allowspindle locking every 3.75 degrees!

DOUBLE #2 MT SPINDLEPART NO. 3458If you want to turn between centers on the outboard sthis option is very desirable.

STAINLESS STEEL BEDWAYS

PART NO. 2387ssRusty bedways are a thing of the past. You can saturn wet or caustic wood without having to worryabout the damage it will do to your lathe bed. If ylive near salt water or in a high humidity environmthe stainless steel ways is the only way to go.Our 2000 Series lathes, Multi-Purpose Extension 60” Long Bed Extension can be ordered with stainsteel ways.

Important Note:Due to the nature of the options in thiscolumn, they are only available when ordering the lathe.

SPECIAL NOTE:The following options are either difficult to install, an expensive upgrade or are not available lathe is built. Therefore, each should be given serious consideration before ordering your lathe.

ACCESSORIES

TAILSTOCK RISER BLOCK PART NO. 3300

For newer lathes, the Tailstock Riser Block is an easyadd-on to the Swing Outboard Attachments. Byinstalling it onto the Outboard Attachment, it allowsthe Tailstock to be used on the outboard side of thelathe. Being able to use the Tailstock will increasesafety (important when turning up to 48”), allowheavier and a wider variety of cuts. An Alignment Kit isavailable for older lathes.

DUST HOODPART NO. 3350

Designed specifically for the 2436, this dust hoodwill quickly and efficiently suck away any small dustparticles generated while sanding. Simply hook it upto a dust extractor, vacuum or central-vac system byattaching the vacuum hose to the 5” gate and startsanding. It can also be moved to the outboard side (if youfind it’s in the way) by folding the side flaps back andsliding it away. There is a nice viewing window forthose interested onlookers and it’s powder painted fora resilient finish.

BRAKING RESISTORPART NO. 3046

If you are a professional woodturner doing large-scalework, the braking resistor is a must. Simply put, thebraking resistor allows the lathe to stop large piecessafely and quickly without tripping out the drive. The drive is designed to shut down to protect itselfwhen an overload occurs, such as trying to stop anoversized or overly heavy piece. No damage to thelathe occurs, but the piece will freewheel to a stop andthe drive will have to be reset. This wastes time andeffort and can be unnerving to say the least. The braking resistor makes stopping the lathe more orless bullet-proof. It will stop any piece, in any gear in4 seconds. It also has the potential of extending the

life of the drive, although drive failures are few and farbetween (estimated 20 year life span).

RFI FILTERPART NO. 2748

Helps minimize AM (and some television antennaereception) interference. It can be factory installed orcustomer installed as an aftermarket item.

REMOTE START/STOPPART NO. 2787

This option is especiallyconvenient when turningoutboard or on a large bedextension. It is wired into the control box and can beattached anywhere on the lathe with its magnetizedcontrol box. It is an option on all ONEWAY lathes.

Important Note:Items in this column are easyelectrical upgrades if you are comfortable workingwith wiring. Otherwise, we recommend these items beinstalled at the time you order your lathe.

OUTBOARD ATTACHMENTSThe ONEWAY 1640 Lathe has an outboard spindle that is threaded right hand and motor with reversing capabilities, making it a true bowl turning lathes. Most wood turners never use the outboard of their lathe because they would have to buy left hand threadedattachments and learn to turn opposite to what they are accustomed to on the inboard side; and let’s face it.,most of us have enough problems learning to turn one way (no pun intended). ONEWAY solved this problem bythreading the outboard spindle right hand and providing a motor with reversing capabilities.

24” BED EXTENSION & OUTBOARD ATTACHMENTPART NO. H0043

The 24” bed extension may be bolted onto either end of the 1640 Lathes.Attached to the outboard end it creates a maximum turning lengthof 24”, but more importantly creates a turning capacity of 24” (i.e. 24” swing).Used on the inboard end, it extends your turning length between centersto a whopping 64 inches.

Special Toolrest Included with the Extension BedA special Toolrest is supplied with the extension toallow you to use your existing banjo on the outboard

side. This extended length post toolrest can be usedwith either the regular 1640 Banjo or with the 24” Banjo(purchased separately). This toolrest goes deeper into thesocket on the 24” banjo but causes no interference issues.

Recommendation: We recommend purchasing a 2436 Banjo (PartNo. 2683A) when using this extension bed on the outboard side as thevibration will be transferred to the lathe in a more desirable fashion. The 24” banjois somewhat stronger and stiffer which will lead to fewer vibration induced catches and lesspossibility of bending the toolrest. This makes using a 24” Banjo a sturdier option when using the24” extension bed on the outboard side of your 1640.

LATHE ACCESSORIES FOR 1640 LATHE

TAILSTOCK RISER BLOCK PART NO. H0116

The Tailstock Riser Block is an add-on to the 24”Extension Bed (H0043). This allows the Tailstockbe used on the outboard side of the lathe. This in twill increase safety and allow a heavier & wider vof cuts.

TAILSTOCK EXTENDERPART NO. 3449

This handy accessory allows for a deeper reach.

BRAKING RESISTORPART NO. 3046

Helps the lathe stop big pieces quickly. Recommefor production turners and people that start and stothe lathe frequently. See page 7 for more details.

RFI FILTERPART NO. 2748Helps minimize AM (and some television antennareception) interference. It can be factory installedcustomer installed as an aftermarket item.

HAND WHEEL HUBPART NO. 2802

Wood is screwed to this hub so a custom hand whcan be made. Only available in M33 x 3.5 thread

SPINDLE EXTENSIONPART NO. 3069

This extension is threaded M33 x 3½” which screwonto the spindle and effectively lengthens it 2-7/8

TAILSTOCK SWINGERPART NO. H0121

This is designed and manufactured with the samehigh quality standards as the Tailstock Swinger fo2436 (Part No. 3598) on page 6 but sized for the 1

REMOTE START/STOPPART NO. 2787This option is especially convenientwhen turning outboard or on a largebed extension. It is wired into the controlbox and can be attached anywhere on the lathe wiits magnetized control box. It is an option on allONEWAY lathes.

EXTRA 16” BANJO (TOOLREST BASE)PART NO. H0082There are certain situations when it is very desirableto have an extra banjo at your disposal. One exampleis for extra long toolrests which allow you to makeone continuous cut. The construction is exactly thesame as the banjo that comes with the lathe. Thesetoolrest bases can also be purchased to upgrade yournon-ONEWAY lathe’s toolrest base. If you are generallyhappy with your lathe but find your current toolrest basemoving while turning or not solidly clamping to the bed, this could be a good option for you. Rather than buy awhole new lathe, just upgrade the toolrest base!Note: A Toolrest is NOT included with this accessory.

24” BANJO (TOOLREST BASE)PART NO. 2683A

The 2436 Banjo can be purchased for use on the 24”Extension & Outboard Attachment. This is a preferredmethod of turning on the outboard side due to increasedsafety and decreased vibration. IN DEPTH FEATURES OF THE 1236SD LATHE

WHY A SIT DOWN LATHE?Traditional woodturning lathes have forced woodturners to turn in a standing position. As we get older it becomesmore and more difficult to stand for long periods of time, even short periods can be an issue. When was the lasttime you had to take a break from the lathe due to sore feet, aching legs, painful knees or hips or a back ache? These are symptoms we can all face while standing at the lathe. Until now we had to bear the pain or take a break. With the creation of the SIT DOWN Lathe you no longer have to suffer. Simply flip the lathe to the sitting position, sit down, relax and turn. The 1236SD is the only woodturning lathe available today which utilizes a rotation bed configuration to allow youto choose your turning position, making it possible to turn for longer periods of time and in more comfort.

THE BEDn Bedways and ribs are welded to a 4½” dia. by ¼”

wall tube. The assembly is stress relieved andprecision machined.

n Bedways are offset so chips and debris fall straightthru without sacrificing rigidity.

n Almost perfect torsional rigidity is achieved - many

more times than twin tube or cast iron bed designs.THE HEADSTOCK n Features a three bearing spindle. At the front, one

angular contact bearing is locked to the shaft witha clamp ring and lock nut. This minimizes radialand axial play of the spindle. The rear bearings floataxially to allow for heat expansion. All bearings aremaintenance free and lubricated for life.

n The spindle is 1-5/8” at maximum diameter anddrilled thru 7/16” with #2 Morse Taper at the inboardend. It is made from high alloy steel, hardened andground to precision tolerance of ±0.0003”.

n A special self supporting wrench is used to removeaccessories from the spindle such as faceplates andchucks.

n 24 position indexing is standard.

THE SPINDLEn The spindle nose which holds the front bearings,

protrudes approximately 1½” in front of theheadstock allowing easy tool maneuvering whenworking on the backside of projects.

n The spindle is 1” - 8tpi with a groove machined fora lock screw. This design contributes to the safetyof this machine, as it reduces the possibility ofchucks or faceplates accidentally unscrewing fromthe spindle. It is safer when sanding and braking.

THE TAILSTOCK n The tailstock has an 1-1/8” diameter quill with

3”travel.n The Tailstock lead screw is a ¾” diameter 6 pitch

REMOTE START / STOPPART NO. 2787

A remote START / STOP control is an availableaccessory for all ONEWAY lathes. It can be factoryinstalled when ordering or customer installed as anaftermarket option. It is wired into the control boxand can be attached anywhere on the lathe with amagnetized control box.

1224 LATHE BED EXTENSIONPART NO. M0221

1018 LATHE BED EXTENSIONPART NO. M0140

Bed extensions are 24” long which bolt to the end ofthe lathe increasing the distance between centers.

Because of the solid construction of these lathes, usingthis extension easily allows turning pieces at thisextended length. The end of this extension is equippedto handle a leg but does not come with one. Aftertesting this extension in our shop we feel that oneextension bolted to the end of a 1018 or 1224 lathewill not require a support leg in most applications.

BANJO / TOOLREST BASE DESIGN(*)

The patented ONEWAY toolrest base is designed tosolve problems associated with traditional cam-locktoolrest bases. This sliding cam clamping mechanismensures tight clamping and smooth operation over therange of the lathe bed. Conventional long cam shaftssuffer from cam shaft deflection. This causes non-uniform clamping over the range of the toolrest base.Cam shaft deflection also causes the clamp handle totighten in different positions.

A conventional clamping mechanism consists of a camshaft that runs the entire length of the toolrest base.Deflection is unavoidable using this unsupportedsystem. Because the cam shaft is so long, it bendswhen clamping pressure is applied when positionedin the middle.

ONEWAY has solved this problem by replacing theregular long cam shaft with a sliding cam assembly.

METAL SPINNING - A LOST ART

Metal spinning is an age-old art which has been some-what forgotten... until recently. With the growth of thewoodturning industry, new life is being infused intometal spinning. What is metal spinning? Simplistically, the processof metal spinning is taking a metal disc and forming itover a predetermined shape on the lathe.

Not many people realize their ONEWAY lathe is perfectfor spinning metal. The quality and precision built intoevery lathe is exactly what you need to spin metal!

The toolrest is clamped in the toolrest base witha captured non-marking block. As a result a verytight fitting hole can be bored. This improves thetoolrest clamp position. The clamp screw handlemay be adjusted at 45° rotations to assure minimum

interference with the handle when turning.

PREMIUM PROFILED vs SERRATED JAW DESIGN?There are advantages to both types of jaws, however we at ONEWAY recommend ourpatented profiled jaws. At design diameter (Figure 1) the serrated design and profile jaws grip equally well, the advantage here for serrated jaws being less wood damageat this specific diameter. However, as soon as you grip something which is not at the

Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3

design diameter (Figure 2), profile jaws grip much better as they are holdinmore surface area. Serrated jaws contact only a small area which diminishdiameter increases and conversely increases wood damage. Premium Profalso give the turner the flexibility of gripping square stock (Figure 3), whicrecommend doing if using non-profiled serrated jaws.

ONEWAYSTEADY RESTS

Why a Bowl Steady?Woodturning is all about vibration and how to deait. Vibration can become a problem in the followinsituations:n Spinning out of balance work piecesn Excess play in spindle bearingsn Flexibility of the woodNo matter how good the lathe is that you are turnion, the machine cannot stop vibration caused byflexibility in the wood. Spindle turners have beensteady rests for as long as people have been turninwood, but bowl turners have never used them. Spsteady rests are generally not suitable for bowls, sthe urging of Dave Lancaster (a professional bowlin Maine) we set out to design a steady rest that tainto account the unique demands of bowl turning.

Increased SafetyWhen turning a bowl or platter, you no longer havtry to support it with your fingers. A nasty catch cbreak any bowl into pieces, and if you are supportwith your fingers you can get badly cut.

Using the Bowl SteadyTo use the Bowl Steady, bring the two wheels up cand perpendicular to the rim of the bowl or platteryou are turning. Loosen off the wing nut and givetensioning arms a squeeze. When they are firm agthe rim, tighten the wing nut and you are ready to The thinner the bowl is the more the bowl steady whelp.

SPINDLE HEAD ASSEMBLY ONLY PART NO. 3308

SPINDLE STEADY PART NO. 3280

After using the bowl steady for only a short time, realized the same scissor principle could be appliespindle steady rest. The resulting steady rest is difthan any other steady rest in history. Pressure canbe applied to the spindle to hold it rock solid withobending it. It can also be mounted without removyour workpiece or your tailstock from the lathe. These Steadies are easy to put on the lathe and onmost lathes can be mounted at any time. They use

virtually no swing and most importantly dampensvibration. With less vibration problems you can ema wider variety of cuts and cutting styles to get thefinish you want.It will handle spindles from ½” to 3”.Note:Clamp Block may be packaged separately.Extra Clamp Blocks available. Why is owning a grinding xture so important?

WHAT’S INCLUDED

WOLVERINEGRINDING JIG

WOLVERINE JIG

Producing razor sharp tools and finely finished bevelshas moved from an art into a science. Any grinding job from skews, scrapers, bowl gouges or roughinggouges are all easy prey for this Jig. The WOLVERINEwill speed up your grinding, give you sharper tools andprolong the life of both tools and grinding wheels. The Wolverine System was designed to turn a lowcost grinder into the ultimate tool for sharpeningwood turning tools. Properly installed with balancedwheels, this system will outperform grinders costing

many hundreds of dollars. The real beauty of thissystem; it fits most 6”, 7”, 8” and 10” grinders witor no modification (please specify if to be used w10” grinder).Owning the WOLVERINE Grinding Jig will ultimsave you time, frustration and money. You can nogrind your tools properly the first time. Uniformcutting edges and single facet bevels will give yousafer, more predictable tools. Because you aregrinding your tools less, both your wheels and toowill last longer.

TWO BASES

The WOLVERINE comes with two aluminum anodizedbases, one for each side of the grinder. By mountingone under each wheel, grinding operations can rapidlybe performed on either side of your grinder withouthaving to reposition bases. Because bases mountdirectly under grinding wheels they are completelyout of the way for occasional freehand grinding. Basesare equipped with cam clamping that makes removing

and installing attachments possible in seconds. Thecam forces all attachments rigidly into the base whicheliminates all play. This system is especially importantas it allows the platform to be moved from the rightto left side of the grinder without disturbing the angleand maintaining a safe minimum clearance from thegrinding wheel. This clearance should always be setfrom / ” to / ” from the wheel Bases are precisionmachined on modern CNC equipment as are allONEWAY manufactured products

PLATFORM

This Grinding Jig also comes equipped with anadjustable angle sturdy platform that has a 3 x 5inch working area. It is made from ¼” thick steeland is machined square after welding. The result isa platform that is both incredibly sturdy and square. This platform can be used on both the left and righthand sides of the grinder. An adjustable speed handlemakes adjustments quick and easy and ensures that

the handle is never in the way.

The Vee-Arm slides in the base and holds your bevangle constant. The handle of the tool is set intothe Vee-Pocket and the tool’s bevel angle can be sewhile the grinder is off. It then becomes a simpleprocess of fine adjustments to get the exact samegrind every time. The Vee-Arm is long enough toany standard tool. Adjusting the arm is as easy asunlocking the clamping lever, moving the arm in o

out and re-clamping the lever.

More consistent grinding will give more consistent cutting which will lead to fewer digs and b

DRY GRINDING AT HIGH SPEED

WOLVERINEGRINDING JIG

WET GRINDING AT SLOW SPEED

Prosn Very fast.n With a properly conditioned wheel a very good edge

can be produced in seconds.n Reshaping a tool is fast.n Grinders and wheels are long lasting and low cost.n Properly dry ground tools out perform wet ground

tools.n Wheels can be trued in seconds with a proper

dressing system.

Consn Less forgiving due to the speed. Care must be ta

to retain tool shape.n Machine set up is critical. Wheels should be

balanced for optimum performance.n Tools will get hot and burn if the wheels are the

wrong type or not properly dressed.

Prosn Tool overheating is not possible. Hardness is retained.n A fine surface finish can almost always be obtained.n Grinding wheels are usually wide therefore wider tools

can be sharpened.

Consn Messy.n Rusting can occur.n Slow - reshaping can take hours.n Wire edge will form. When this is broken off, th

tool is not sharp and must be stropped or honed.n When the grinding wheel goes out of true (round

or flat), resurfacing to true is not possible to do ireasonable time. Expect to spend hours rather thminutes.

What The Wolverine Jig sharpens…

SCRAPERS

The Wolverine Grinding Jig comes with a 3 x 5 inchadjustable platform which allows even large scrapersto be ground with ease.

PARTING TOOLS

Parting tools are sharpened using the platform.Laying it flat on its side on the platform gives a slighthollow grind which is very desirable for clean parting.

GOUGESGouges are ground in the Vee-Arm supplied withthe Wolverine Grinding Jig. Once the proper angle isdetermined, turn on your grinder. Place the tool inthe Vee-Pocket, rest the cutting edge directly on thewheel and roll the tool. It’s that simple.

CHISELSCarpenter chisels up to 1¼” wide can be sharpenedusing the Wolverine’s Vee-Arm. The arm is adjusted toset the bevel and the chisel can be ground with smallsideways motions and light cutting pressure. Three orfour strokes on a stop will generate a razor sharp edge.

SKEWS

The Wolverine’s Vee-Arm can be used to sharpen skewsbut a superior method is described on page 25.

CARVING TOOLS

With a finely dressed 80 or 120 grit wheel, evensmall carving tools can be superbly ground using thestandard Vee-Arm.

GRINDING TIPIf you are working with a tool that will need to be re-sharpened several times, leave the Vee-Arm clampedin place. By doing this you can rapidly reproduce anidentical bevel angle. You can also sharpen the toolbefore you put it away so that your tools will alwaysbe sharp while removing only a minimal amount ofmaterial.

The ONEWAY Team recommends dry high speed grinding over wet slow speed grinding.

WOLVERINE VARI-GRIND 2ONEWAY is pleased to introduce an exciting newdevelopment in sharpening technology. The newVari-Grind 2 features all the benefits of the OriginalVari-Grind but increases ease of use, and safety. Thenew Vari-Grind 2 restrains both the side-to-sidemotion of the tool, as well as the pivot point so thatthe tool cannot slip in either direction. The patented pivot point location allows the tool tomove in a true cylindrical motion about the adjustingrod which produces a true fingernail and side grind atany bevel angle. The ONEWAY Vari-Grind 2 is the onlyrestrained grinding jig that performs in this way. Withthe Vari-Grind 2 sharpening is virtually fool proof.Designed with a bearing based clamp fitted with anylon cap, the Vari-Grind 2 cannot damage the tooland can be easily replaced if it ever wears out.

WOLVERINEORIGINAL VARI-GRIND & SKEW GRINDING

Te ONEWAY Skew Grinding Attachment isshown with the ONEWAY Wolverine Grinding Jig.

One reason that the skew leaves such an incredibl

finish on work pieces is its very thin edge whichleaves naturally cleaner cuts. This creates a problsharpening the skew as this thin edge will easilyfold over during grinding. ONEWAY’s Skew GrinAttachment minimizes this problem by allowing tskew to be mechanically held. The unique offsethandle position actually reduces the hollow grindgenerated and leaves a stronger more predictabletool.

SKEW GRINDING ATTACHMENT -Quickly and easily sharpen your skew chisels

INSIGHTS ON DESIGN

Very simply the jig consists of two pockets offset3½” to either side of the wheel. When the handleof the skew is placed in these pockets the cuttingedge becomes square to the wheel. As the toolis moved side to side on the wheel the offsetposition of the handle forces the tool slightly upand down the wheel. As the tool is forced up thewheel it grinds more off the back of the bevel andflattens the grind producing a virtually flat bevelwith greatly improved cutting characteristics. Thifixture is a highly recommended option with ourWolverine Grinding System.

THE ORIGINAL VARI-GRINDThe Wolverine Original Vari-Grind Jig has remained abest seller for many years and for good reason. It willproperly shape and maintain the edge on standardbowl gouges, the modern side grind shape and thetraditional fingernail shape.Shown is a Matercut Bowl Gouge held in the Vari-Grind with a side grind configuration. ONEWAY hasspent a considerable amount of time and effort todevelop a system which will consistently producesharp, repeatable geometries on turning tools for thewoodturner.Three tool shapes that are very popular and useful arethe fingernail grind, the traditional bowl gouge andthe side grind configurations. These shapes howeverare difficult both to grind and to maintain. This single attachment will produce every shape fromthe first mentioned fingernail grind right up to theside grind and everything in between to suit yourneeds.NOTE: The Vari-Grind was designed for use with theWolverine Grinding Jig. This attachment can be usedwithout it by creating a suitable rest position for thefixture.

ONEWAY’s Dressing system is the onlydresser on the market that allows controlled removal ofthis minute amount of material.

Wheels will:n Last longern Be round, clean and sharpn Cut faster, cooler and finer All with less burning!

Why dress grinding wheels?

Grinding wheels must be dressed to keep them sharpand clean. Grinding wheels like sandpaper become dullwith use. The grit wears down and becomes dull. Ifgrinding wheels are not sharp they begin rubbing ratherthan cutting, resulting in increased friction causinghigher temperatures and burned tools.Wheels must be kept free from metal par ticles that buildup during sharpening. Like sandpaper that gets cloggedwith sawdust during sanding, grinding wheels becomeclogged with metal particles during grinding.

This hand held dresser is well suited to quickly cleanup loaded grinding wheels. Excessive pressure willquickly take away a lot of the grinding wheel, however, the wheel will cut fast and cool for rough shaping. For finishing we recommend final dressing with ourWolverine Dressing Attachment described above.

WOLVERINEDRESSING JIG

Picture above is the Wolverine Dressing Jig mounted in a Wolverine Grinding Jig.

Q & A: How often should I dress mygrinding wheels?

How often you dress your wheel will depend on mfactors such as how much sharpening you are dointhe type of wheels you use and the method you usto dress your wheels. The grinding surface shouldbe kept in good condition and dressed when thefollowing occur:n Excessive heat is noticed during the grinding pron The wheel looks glazedn Metal particles that build up in the wheel may ca

load lines in the tool you are sharpening

Because ONEWAY’s Wolverine Dressing Attachmmechanically held you can (to a certain extent) cothe finish of the wheel. By moving the diamond athe wheel quickly you can attain a ‘rougher’ finishmoving it more slowly across the wheel you can aa ‘finer’ finish.

Tools will have:n An excellent finishn Sharper edgesn Smoother bevels

PRECISIONBALANCING SYSTEM

BALANCING SYSTEM

Tame your grinder and drastically reduce vibration. With ONEWAY’s Balancing System, wheels can becustom balanced at a fraction of the cost traditionallyassociated with this procedure.

Why Balance Grinding Wheels?Grinding wheels are sensitive to vibration due to theirmass and speed. Vibrations can be responsible forinferior finishes on tools and can harm bearing andbearing housings of the grinder. Vibration is causedby unbalanced grinding wheels. Bench or pedestalgrinders do not come equipped with a way to balancethe wheels. That is why ONEWAY has designed aneconomical way to balance grinding wheels. The following defects may be present on your grindingwheels:n Wheel out of roundn Hole not centeredn Thickness variationn Density variationOne or a combination of the above cause vibration. Ifexcessive, the wheels must be balanced.ONEWAY’s balancing system is a product which peoplemust see to believe. The difference can be astounding.Benefits: Wheels, bearings and bearing housings willlast longer. Your machine will make less noise. Finisheson your tools and projects will be improved with lesseffort.

How does it work?Left and right hand balance flanges mount directlyto the wheel and stay there until the wheel needs tbe replaced, at which time they can be put on newwheels.

This flange/wheel assembly is then placed on thebalance fixture base. The heavy side of the wheelwill naturally settle at the bottom. The balancingscrews are moved towards the top to counter theout-of-balance of the wheel. The screws are move‘up’ in small increments until balanced. The wheeconsidered balanced when it no longer settles in o‘heavy side down’ position.

Rebalancing may need to be done after the first wdressing.

Balanced wheels will give better grindingperformance. Once completed, rebalancing shoulnot be necessary for the life of the wheels. You wget better grinding performance needed to get shatools for better finishes on your turning projects.

GRINDING WHEELS

Grinding Wheels are an integral part of toolsharpening. Manufactured for ONEWAY to ONEWAYspecifications, these wheels are just hard enough notto shed grit in use yet they are soft enough to allowdressing without difficulty. They are porosity induced to stop excessive loadingand glazing The grit is more angular than globular forbetter cutting action than white or pink wheelsThese wheels are excellent for the woodturner’sapplications

Which wheels are right for you?n For large tools such as skews, flat scrapersand

carpenter chisels choose 54 grit for roughing and 80grit for finishing

n For small tools and finishing large gouges choose

80 and 120 grit wheels

What is the best conguration for sharp-ening my HSS turning tools?

The following five items should be considered whensetting up a grinding station for sharpening your HSSturning tools.

1.The Grinder- recommended specs.n Power: ½ HP (min.), ¾ HP (best)n Wheel Size: 8”n Shaft Size: ⁄ ” (min.)n Speed: 3450 RPM

Note: Test that the grinder you are purchasing comesup to speed quickly - say 4 to 6 seconds. It must runvibration free with the wheels removed.

2. Grinding Wheels - must be suitable for yourneedsWe suggest the following:n 54 grit for roughing large surfacesn 80 grit for finishingn 120 grit for fine finishing and small tools

3.Balanced Wheels - most wheels that come withbench grinders are unbalanced. See page 28 formore information.

4. Wheel Dressing - use a single point dressingdiamond in a holder capable of being fed in withcontrol .001 or less.

5.Grinding Jig - for best results use a grinding jig forall your sharpening needs. The ONEWAY GrindingJig can be found on page 22-23.

In conclusion, there are many different grinders andgrinding wheels on the market today. If you adhere tothe above five items you will be able to build a highlyefficient and effective sharpening station, withoutbreaking the bank.

EASY-CORE™ CORING SYSTEMWhy core? The one main reason that coring is better than hollowing can be said ina single word: SAVING. Coring saves you time, saves your energy, savesyour tools, saves your wood and can save a huge amount of clean up.

n Saves you time

Coring is a very time effective method to make a bowl.It is far quicker than hollowing.

n Saves your energy

You are not only done faster but it is also less physicallydemanding

n Saves your toolsHollowing out a large bowl can take a toll on your toolsand your grinding wheels. Depending on the wood andsize of bowl blank being hollowed, tools can get dullquickly and need constant sharpening.

n Saves your wood

Whether you’re using a small piece of expensive woodor a log from the wood pile, coring will save yourwood. Less wood required for more bowls gained is anequation in the turner’s favor.

n Saves you clean up duty

Hollowing a large bowl can produce a staggeringamount of wood shavings and chips. Garbage bagscan quickly be filled creating a problem of what to dowith the waste. The rapid accumulation of chips on ashop floor can also cause a myriad of hazards, oftenmaking it necessary to stopand clean up several timesbefore the jobis done.

Step 1: Specify your BASE SETThe base unit needed is determined by the size of thelathe. The distance between the middle of the spindleand the bed of the lathe multiplied by 2 is the baseunit required.Any size lathe from 16” to 26” swing with a flat bed canbe accommodated with the Easy-Core™ System. Seepage 31 for smaller swing options.A Clamp Block (packaged separately) is included withthe Base Unit. This will also vary from lathe to lathe. To determine the size of clamp block needed, measurethe distance between the bedways. This gap distancedetermines the clamp block required. A 12” Sure GripTool Handle is included with each base set as well.

SPURS &SAFE DRIVERS

ONEWAY Safe Drivers and Spurs are made frompremium carbon steel. The points are held in thebody with a set screw so the length which the pointprotrudes is adjustable.

CHUCK SPURS

ONEWAY Chuck Spurs are available to mount directlyinto Chucks made by ONEWAY.

Why buy a Chuck Spur?

The answer is simple. Convenience. Because of thisdirect mounting capability, it is unnecessary to removethe Chuck from your lathe to do spindle work.

What sizes are available?n Our Chuck Spurs come in two sizes. ½” and 1”.n The ½” Chuck Spur is great for turning spindles that

are less than an inch in diameter, i.e. Chair legs.n The 1” Chuck Spur will work best for anything of an

inch in diameter or larger. It is a lot more robust.n Both our Chuck Spurs have total length of 3 inches.

BIG BITE CHUCK SPURPART NO. 3946Woodturners are lucky in that turners get to use spectacularly figured woods that are rejected bywoodworkers. The difficult thing is trying to make the best use of the grain of these pieces. If a a faceplate you have to make your best guess as to what is inside the burl when you are lookingideal solution to make the best use of a challenging piece of wood is to mount it between centerwork better than four prong spurs for this because you have an easier time tilting the piece and board grain better than four prong spurs. Oneway is pleased to introduce the Oneway Big Bite Cinch diameter it easily drives pieces up to 24 inches in diameter but is safely contained inside thof even our smallest chuck. The spur has a 1 inch locating plug to center securely into the chuckcrosswise by the jaws for a secure hold. The teeth and point are 60 degrees so it will bite deeplyadvantage of the holding power of the chuck making it very economical.

TOOL HANDLES, ADAPTORS &THREAD-LOK™ FERRULES

THREAD-LOK™ FERRULES

This innovative product from ONEWAY allows you toquickly and easily connect a gouge to a wooden toolhandle. Here’s how it works:

The ferrules have an internal threaded taper. Byturning a tool handle with a matching taper at thetool end, you can quickly and easily screw the ferruleonto the handle. If the ferrule ever loosens up, simply give it anothertwist to lock it on to the handle again. The tool is then inserted into the ferrule and lockeddown using the set screws. If you want to be able to adjust the length on the toolstick out, simply drill an appropriate sized hole intothe handle before you turn it. This will allow the toolto be inserted further into the handle and obtain theright balance for the tool.

LASER GUIDEDDEEP HOLLOWING SYSTEM

What Does It Do?Laser guided hollowing systems allow the turner toeasily gauge the wall thickness of a vessel while it isbeing cut.

How Does It Work?

A laser pointer is set so the laser light is offset from thecutting tip by the desired wall thickness of the vessel. When the hollowing process is started the laser willpoint mostly to the middle of the vessel. As the vesselis hollowed and the cutting tip moves outward thelaser light follows. Once the cutter reaches the desiredthickness the laser light falls off the vessel.

What Lathes Can It Be Used On?

The laser light system can be used on any machinethat has a flat bed that can support a rear backrest. Arear backrest support is necessary because the laserlight must be held square to the bed of the lathe.

What Makes Our Hollowing SystemUnique To Other Laser Systems?

One of the difficulties of laser pointers is that asyou move about the form the laser pointer must beconstantly adjusted to keep the laser perpendicular tothe area of the vessel that is being cut.The ONEWAY laser point is designed so that it can beeasily adjusted to be perpendicular to the wall of thevessel while the cutter is still inside the vessel.

Why Is The ONEWAY System Better? The ONEWAY Laser Guided Hollowing System hasbeen designed to make turning hollow forms easierand safer. Back arresting the hollowing bar reducesthe strength needed to control the bar and controlstwisting forces which allows the use of offset bars. The backrest is large and easily adjustable for bothoverall height and height of the gate. The bars are stainless steel and / ” in diameter. The

/ ” diameter was chosen as it allows easier accessaround the tight neck of a vessel where vibration isnot a problem. For deeper vessels an optional ¾” baradaptor is available.

Because the tips can be rotated, only three bars arerequired to hollow a 7 inch diameter sphere through a1 inch hole with a 1 inch long neck.

Which Tools Are Recommended For ABasic System?

To make full use of the system you should use all thebars. The most used bars are the straight and singlebend. More difficult shapes can be achieved usingthe double bend. Deeper vessels require the 1 inchstraight bar.

How Deep Can I Hollow Using ThisSystem? It depends on the type of wood, the kind of lathe, yourexperience and your patience. Most people will beable to hollow 9 inches deep relatively easily with thestandard ⁄ ” bars.

What Is The Cutter Made From? The cutter is made from M2 HSS.

How Is The Cutter Sharpened?

The cutter can be easily sharpened on a grinder. It isground on the outside like any standard scraper. It canalso be honed on the top if required.

Is The Backrest Adjustable? The ONEWAY backrest can be adjusted for height withtwo screw adjusters. This allows you to get the backrestflat and the right height. The height of the opening inthe gate is also adjustable with screw adjustment. Thegate can be also be propped open to allow easy insertionand removal of heavy boring bars. The gate can then beset back shut to the preset height. The backrest is offset and has a slotted base so it can be

set with the wide part of the backrest to the front or tothe back. For very large offsets it can be rotated.

Do I Have To Be An Advanced Turner ToUse The System?Hollow turning is difficult as you are working blind. TheONEWAY Laser Guided Hollowing System removes mostof the problems by giving you a visual aid to where thetool is. You still need a basic knowledge of the properway to hollow a vessel but now execution is greatlysimplified.

VERSA-MOUNT™UNIVERSAL MOUNTING SYSTEM

The Versa-Mount™ universal mounting system isdesigned to make exchanging lathe accessories simpleand easy. It not only allows you to easily changebetween accessories on one lathe, you can also gofrom one lathe to another with different spindle threadsizes!

VERSA MOUNT™ COUPLING

The key to the system is the Versa-Mount™ Coupling(pictured with the Faceplate Rings). This is screwedon to the spindle thread on your lathe and remainspermanently mounted. Other accessories like chucksand faceplates are then mounted to the Versa-Mount™Coupling using a twist & lock type configuration.Couplings are nickel plated and direct threaded in foursizes: M33 x 3 ½, 1¼” – 8 TPI, 1”-8 TPI, and ¾”-16TPI.

Does the coupling have a set screw to“lock it” to the spindle?

Yes, all our Versa-Mount™ Couplings have the drilledand tapped holes for set screws to lock it to the spindle.

Can the Couplings be used in reverse?

Yes, the Couplings have countersunk keyholes for thescrews. This will prevent the screws coming loose fromthe coupling when turning or sanding in reverse.

Is the coupling available for other threadsizes?

A Universal Coupling is available, but at a higher costas a Stronghold chuck adaptor is required to convert itto the appropriate thread. A special wrench is includedwith each Coupling for removing it from the lathe.

VERSA-MOUNT™ FACEPLATE RINGS

These faceplate rings are designed to be used with thenew Versa-Mount™ Coupling (described above). Theyallow you to un-mount and re-mount large blanksof wood with ease. You no longer have to screw thefaceplate onto the spindle which can be extremelyarduous depending on the size and weight of theblank.Simply mount the Faceplate Ring to the blank as youwould a standard faceplate, and then lift it onto the

bed and into the mounting holes of the Versa-Mount™Coupling. Tighten down the three Faceplate RingScrews and you’re ready to go! Simple, quick and easy.Multiple Faceplate Rings can be purchasedinexpensively to fit onto one Coupling. FaceplateRings are powder painted and available in 4 inch, 5inch, and 6 inch sizes. This makes this system idealfor a classroom setting. If a customer has lathes withdifferent spindle sizes, multiple Couplings can bepurchased and pieces can be moved from one machineto another.

Do the Faceplate screw holes accept thesame size screws as the ONEWAY No-FlexFaceplates?Yes. These faceplate rings use the same sized screwsas the No-Flex Faceplates (page 33) however; thecountersinks are slightly larger on the 4” FaceplateRing to ensure the head of the screw sits below theface of the ring. This is necessary in order to be able tomount the ring to the Versa-Mount™ Coupling.

What are the advantages of this system?

Screwing a heavy blank which is mounted on afaceplate onto a spindle can be an awkward anddifficult task that is beyond the strength of somepeople. With the new ONEWAY Versa-Mount System, mounting heavy pieces is much easier. The piece stillhas to be lifted to the spindle but locating and lockingit onto the Coupling is much simpler and requires lessstrength. Three bolts on the Versa-Mount FaceplateRing engage into matching slots on the Coupling. TheCoupling has a pilot which matches up with a boredhole on the Faceplate Rings to ensure concentricity.Once the work piece is in place a simple 1/8 turn willhold the piece sufficiently so that it can be safely letgo. The Faceplate Ring can then be easily tightenedto the Coupling with three bolts. The danger of crossthreading and damaging the faceplate or the spindleis eliminated.

What is the reasoning behind the holecongurations?

We wanted holes opposite so that if they are left onwhile the blank dries, two screws can be left alignedwith the grain and the others removed. We put ineight screw holes because that should be very close tothe strength of the three bolts that hold the plate ontothe coupling.

Are there any maximum weight recom-mendations for these Faceplate Rings?

We do not make maximum weight recommendatiobecause so much more is dependent on the speedand out of balance condition than the weight. Theheaviest piece we ever mounted damaged the threon a cast iron faceplate because it was screwed onlittle crooked. The Versa-Mount™ will prevent thfrom happening. Since it is all steel construction ibe in the area of twice as strong.

DRILLWIZARD™ &SCREW CHUCK

DRILLWIZARD™ ASSEMBLY PART NO. 3377

Spindle turning seems to be one of woodturning’sforgotten pleasures. A simple object like a stool can beturned quickly and used forever. You get to use a largevariety of cuts, coves, beads, v-grooves, planing with askew, roughing down a square; a single spindle can usealmost every cut there is. If you dislike the repetitionof doing even four stool legs the same, make them alldifferent! The trouble with spindle turning is that most spindleturning projects need cross holes. A stool needs four holesdrilled in the seat, at the correct angle and all at 90 degreesto each other. The legs will need cross holes, again at thecorrect angle and indexed to each other. Setting up for thison a drill press is difficult. Our DrillWizard™ makes it easy. Ideal for theconstruction of chairs and stools, the DrillWizard™ will

allow you to quickly and easily drill holes of a specificdepth at a specific angle.

SCREW CHUCK The ONEWAY Screw Chuck was designed in response to a requirement for makingsmall parts. It is especially well suited for projects such as drawer knobs and otheritems where holding possibilities are limited. You can use any length of slotted,Phillips or square head screw from No.8 o No. 10. The hex bit seats firmly into thescrew head. A set screw then pushes the hex bit forward and locks the wood screwfrom the rear against the brass head in the front.Small parts can be drilled and held with the same screw size that will be used forinstalling the piece when it is finished.
