October Recap:
October's Guest Ensemble Group - River City Pipe Band
River City Pipe Band is a performance (non-competition) pipe and drum band. Money earned
from band performances is used to purchase uniforms, instruments, and additional piping/drumming
instruction. They performed with a mini-band. Their tune selection included the 2/4 marches “Teribus”
and “Corrichoillies
Welcome to the Northern
Meeting.” They also
played a set of 3/4
marches: “Shoals of
Herring” and “I See Mull.”
They followed this with an
excellent 6/8 aire called
“Dark Island” and 6/8
marches “Bonnie
Dundee” and “Steam
Boat.”
Local Hero - Logan Chavez
L ogan is 16 years old; he is a junior at Mt. View High School in
Vancouver, WA. He started learning the bagpipes when he was 10. Not
knowing what to do or where to go he was given Mark Tomassetti’s name
and number, that is when Logan’s piping really got started. Logan has played
with the Portland Metro Youth Pipe Band for the last two seasons. While in
the band there has been great friendships made with the members of the
Portland Metro Youth Pipe Band, White Spot Pipe Band from Canada, and
NW Junior Pipe Band from Seattle.
Along with bagpipes, Logan enjoys playing competitive
hockey. He started skating when he was three. By the time he
was five he was playing competitive hockey traveling the
country playing Ice and roller hockey, this has made for some
great adventures and memories for Logan and his family. Going
to Detroit Michigan and Phoenix Arizona for Nationals in roller
hockey was a great accomplishment.

Featured Performer – Will Nichols
Will Nichols- a current member of SFU who started piping at
the age of 6 in Eagle River, Alaska- began his performance with a
double MSR, including some common tunes like Susan McLeod and
some less known pieces. Between the sets, Will discussed the technical
aspects of the tunes and gave pointers on effective practice techniques.
He steadily worked his way
through his MSR, settled in and
played a few Piobaireachds, and
then finishes off with some fun
pieces. In addition to the fulfilling
the OPS audience's request for a
Piobrairachd, Will moved into high
gear with Gordon Duncan's
"Pressed for Time". Will was the judge for the competition earlier in
the day. Results for the competition may be found below.

Competition Schedule for 2010-2011 Session Schedule: Detailed listing of events is shown in the chart below. There will be no competition in February because of the planned workshop.
Times: Chanter and Grade 5 – Check in 4:30. Competition 5:00. All other piping grades – Check in 5:00. Be prepared to play. All drumming grades – Check in 5:30. Be prepared to play.

All contestants are required to play in recognizable Highland attire except Chanter class.
Tune Requirements: All tunes for piping and drumming events are required to be 4 parts. Exceptions are all changer class and grade 5 piping events where 2 parts of a tune played twice is permitted. Also note specific requirements for certain grade 2 and 1 piping events indicated in the chart below.
