OptiTune Architecture
• OptiTune consists of the following components:
– Management Server: central webserver that orchestrates clients
– Management Client: gets task list from management server, and reports back status

– Relay Server: hosts remote assistance sessions when a direct network connection is unavailable

Management Server
• A central webserver that orchestrates all clients
• Microsoft IIS/ASP.NET based
• Cloud hosted for your convenience, but you can also self
host it on your own hardware or private cloud
• Management Client communicates with the
Management Server to:
– Get task list
– Submit reports and status
• Administrators or Report Viewers login to the
Management Server to carry out all operations

Management Client
• Client Software installed on each managed computer
• Native code, written in C++, with no dependencies on any runtime frameworks (e.g. .NET, Java, etc…)
• Communicates with the Management Server
– Gets task list
– Sends status reports
• Runs as a Local System Service on the managed computer, silently in the background
• No User Interface
• Can execute tasks when no one is logged in

Remote Assistance
• Lets an administrator remotely connect to an end user’s
computer to offer assistance
• The administrator can view the end user’s desktop, and
control the keyboard and mouse
• File transfer between computers is also supported
through an ‘Explorer’ like interface
• As long as both users have an internet connection, a
remote assistance connection can be established
• Works through firewalls, NAT devices, etc…

Support Center Application
• Optional, Tray Icon application that runs on each client
computer
• Appears in lower right corner of the screen as a
“lifesaver” icon
• Can also be launched from a desktop shortcut
• Provides end users with support options for contacting
technical support, or requesting remote assistance
• Fully configurable, all text, icons, support actions are
configured by the administrator
• Different configurations of the support center can be
applied to different groups of computers

Remote Assistance Server
• Application installed alongside the Management Client
• When an end user requests remote assistance through
the Support Center application, it is launched to serve
the user’s desktop
• The administrator will connect to the end user’s desktop
using the Remote Assistance Client software
• Written entirely in house, not a repackaged third party
product (e.g. TeamViewer, etc…)

Remote Assistance Client
• When an end user requests remote assistance, the
administrator uses this application to connect to the end
user’s desktop
• Shows the end user’s desktop, and lets the administrator
control the keyboard and mouse
• Can also perform file transfer between end user and
administrator computers

Relay Server
• When no direct connection is available to an end user’s
computer for remote assistance, the Relay Server is used
• Supports incoming HTTPS connections only, to allow the
greatest compatibility with firewalls and NAT devices
• Most OptiTune administrators won’t interact with the
relay server directly
• But, you can host your own Relay Server as well, if you
are hosting the Management Server

Monitoring & Alerting
• OptiTune can actively monitor your organization’s
computers, and alert you when important events occur
• Supports alerting through email and SMS text messages
• Comes with a predefined list of “events”, but you can also
customize this list, or add your own events
• You can also customize the email/sms template, event
categories, etc…
• Allows you to define a weekly schedule for each group of
users, to only notify specific groups during certain times

Antivirus Integration
• Rather than force organizations to use a specific antivirus
package, OptiTune integrates with existing antivirus
software you may already own, or are free
• Most competitors bundle an antivirus solution, and
charge extra
• It currently supports the following products:
– Microsoft Security Essentials
– Microsoft Forefront (2007, 2010, and above)
– Windows Defender (included in Windows 8 and
above)

Antivirus Integration
• OptiTune integrates with popular antivirus software to perform
– Quick Scans
– Full Scans
– Signature Updates
• It will also retrieve the following information from the antivirus software:
– Protection Information (Product/Engine/Signature Versions)
– Realtime Protection Status
– Detected Malware
• With OptiTune’s monitoring and alerting, you can subscribe to antivirus related events, and be notified when malware is detected on your systems

Application Deployment
• Deploying applications is an important part of managing
IT infrastructure
• OptiTune supports automated
– Application Install
– Application Uninstall
– Application Repair (MSI only)
• To deploy an application on many computers (e.g.
Microsoft Office), you use OptiTune’s Package Creator
tool to package up the install folder to a “.bvx” file.

Package Creator
• To deploy an application using OptiTune, you need to
create a “.bvx” package file, and then share it on a
network share, or upload it to an HTTP server
• The OptiTune Package Creator is a guided wizard that
will create a “.bvx” file from an application installer
directory.
• Typically, only an OptiTune administrator will ever use the
Package Creator

Application Deployment
• The “.bvx” file is then uploaded to a network share, or an
http server that all client computers can access
• Once the .bvx file is uploaded, you create an “Install Task”
in OptiTune, with help from the Package Creator tool
• Then, you select the groups of computers you want to
deploy the install task to, and specify the schedule for
when it should be installed on each computer
• OptiTune then proceeds to install the application on
each computer you have chosen, and notifies you of the
results

Application Deployment
• Similarly, to uninstall or repair applications, you create
“Uninstall Tasks” and “Repair Tasks” in OptiTune, and
deploy these tasks to groups of computers

Patch Management
• OptiTune fully integrates with Windows Update/Microsoft Update to install updates on all computers
• You can specify individual updates to install, or more commonly choose which categories or severities of updates to install
• You can see the Windows Update status for every update, for every computer in your organization
• Also, you can specify a “delay” for automatically installing updates, in case you want to evaluate the updates more carefully before installing them
• 3rd Party updates are also supported through Install Tasks

Performance Monitoring
• OptiTune gathers performance data, and shows you graphs of the following:
– CPU Usage
– Memory Usage
– Disk Activity
– Network Activity
– System Up Time
– Number of Processes

• You can specify how far back you want performance data, and at what interval to collect data
