DIAPERS... REUSABLE OR DISPOSABLE - A Messy DilemmaBy Punch Woods, Board Member

We are as anxious about our environment as we are concerned that all babies and adults have the clean diapers they need. What do we do? There seems to be no easy answer.

Did you know?

• About 40 babies are born each day in Pima County and each baby will typically use an average of 5000 disposable diapers before s/he is toilet trained.

• More than 100 million disposable diapers plus millions more adult incontinent supplies (adult diapers) go to land fi ll each year in Pima County.

• Two years ago, 2.1% of Pima County discards to land fi lls were disposable diapers compared to 4.4% were clothing and footwear.

• It is estimated that disposable diapers have a decomposition rate of 550 years.

• Disposables take about half as much energy as cloth diapers, using one-fourth as much wa-ter, generate half as much pollution and produce one-seventh the water pollution?

I’m not making this up! See; Pima County Health department, Alaska Science Forum, 1-9-91, www.realmama.org, and City of Tucson Environmental Services.

A few years ago the small upscale town of Santa Clarita in northern Los Angles County at-tempted to recycle disposable diapers. Knowaste LLC failed in this attempt, but they have been successful in other parts of the world. Knowaste describes themselves as the pioneers of the world’s fi rst cost effective and en-vironmentally friendly solution to meet the world challenge of nappy and adult incontinence product waste.

There are choices; disposable diapers, liners and/or training pants, most made from paper-like fi ber with plastic liner and backing. There are even biodegrad-able and fl ushable diapers. Most reus-able diapers are made of cotton cloth. And there are additional special features and wetness barriers, etc. But regard-less of the choice, all carry an ecological consequence.

Obviously we don’t have a solution but we do have the question. What Diaper(s) should we provide and recommend? Can you help us with some answers? Email us your ideas at [email protected]

SCHOOL DIAPER DRIVES... START PLANNING NOWSCHOOLS DONATE THOUSANDS OF DIAPERS EACH YEAR.

Does your child’s school hold a diaper drive? If so, great! If not, consider talking to teachers, administrators and parent groups about doing one during this next school year. Donations can be in diapers or money (Dollars for Diapers?) A school diaper drive can be fun, competitive and educational! Teachers can incorporate current curriculum using diapers for everything from math (how much does a million diapers weigh com-pared to a whale?) ot social studies (discussions of poverty, cost of diapers, budgets, etc.). The most important lesson learned will be that every single child can make a dif-ference in someone’s life in our community.

There are tons of ideas on our Web site to get you started:www. diaperbank.org/SchoolDrives.aspx

You can always call the Diaper Bank for further assistance in planning a school diaper drive. Remember, for a successful drive, keep it ... F.U.G. Fun, Upbeat and Goofy!

DANCING WITH OUR STARS A SMASH HIT! This year’s second annual gala fundraising event at Loew’s Ventana Canyon Resort - Dancing With Our Stars - was a smashing success for the Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona thanks to so many in our community who contributed their time, talent and treasure! Bobby Rich, from MIX-FM handled the M.C. duties and Allen Kath was our fast-talking auctioneer.

Our event sponsors - the Jim Click Automo-tive Team, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, and KVOI - deserve a big thank you as well. And kudos to all our local celebrity dancers who put their best foot forward for a good cause. You’re ALL winners on our dance card: Steve Alley, Slivy Edmonds Cotton, Faria Dretler, Jayne Henninger, Roxanne Housley, Richard Luebke, Dan Marries, Doug Martin, Carolyn Russo, Eric Schindler and Sue Sherrick.

A HUGE hug goes to our Dance Studio Partners: Arizona Ballroom Company, Fred Astaire Dance Studio, Shall We Dance and Studio West Dance Studio and to our stel-lar judges: Artie Stone, Melissa Lowe and Douglas Nielsen. Diana Madaras and Bar-bara LaWall served as honorary co-chairs of the event. Last, but certainly not least, thanks to all who came out to support the dancers and the Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona. The proceeds from this benefi t event will help so many people in need.

Starting - September 1, 2008, the Southern Arizona Community Diaper Bank will be auctioning off a number of fun and unique items to raise money for our organization - and the more items we have the more money we can raise, so we’re asking for your help.

Give a little and get a lot in return.Whether you have one item or 100 to contribute, your participation is an invaluable part of our fundraising efforts. By donating an item or service directly online, you’ll be helping to raise money for our organization, and you’ll receive a mention on our site that can link back to your own web page.

19th Annual MIX-FM Baby FairAids New Parents, Builds Awareness

We’d like to thank everyone who came out to the TCC for the MIX-FM Baby Fair on Au-gust 16th and took the time to visit our booth. Special thanks go to Bobby Rich, Mrs. Grant and the rest of the MIX-FM gang for their support of the Diaper Bank (naming us as the event’s “offi cial benefi ciary.”)

The Baby Fair is an exciting day-long event and a great resource for new and expecting parents, with vendors sharing goodies and infor-mation, providing resources and generally helping those with a new bundle of joy start off on the right foot.

And congratulations to the winners of our Daddy Diapering Olympics! See you again next year!

Thank YouFor Your Support!
