The Pastor’s Message

Pope Francis Speaks to Our Hearts God is Patient with Us God is not impatient like us, who often want everything all at once, even in our dealings with other people. God is patient with us because he loves us, and those who love are able to understand, to hope, to inspire confidence; they do not give up, they do not burn bridges, they are able to forgive. Let us remember this in our lives as Christians; God always waits for us, even when we have left him behind! He is never far from us, and if we return to him, he is ready to embrace us.

Sunday Morning Option for Adult Bible Study!

Jim McCullough, Adult Catechesis, is offering a Sunday morning Bible Study for interested adults. It meets from 10:30-11:30 AM while our parish Religious Education program is in session. Bring your own

Please Note: Thanksgiving Day,

Friday, November 28th, NO Mass Or Communion Service

The Church Office will be closed Thursday, November 27th and

Friday, November 28th.

“Laudetur Jesus Christus!” (Praised be Jesus Christ!) I became the organist at my parish church when I was in the 6th grade. The year was 1975, and I remember looking at the flood of magazines about the “liturgy” that were marketed toward the amateur organist (now called the “pastoral musician”). In that generation following the Second Vatican Council, the vocabulary that had for centuries been customary suddenly changed overnight in an effort to be more “relevant” to modern men and women. “Holy Mass” or “The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass” became the “liturgy” or just “Eucharist.” No longer did the priest offer the Holy Sacrifice. Instead, we gathered as a community and “did” liturgy together—especially in the “hip” or “mod” parishes. Please understand that this is not meant to denigrate these parishes, only to draw a distinction between the myriad of experiences most folks had in various parishes. During this time, a great emphasis was placed upon having everyone EXCEPT the priest involved in “planning liturgy,” as if this no longer was the sole domain of the priest. I can remember in the Jesuit high school I attended, the weekly “planning sessions” where arguments broke out among the participants about which song to sing and when. Why do I mention this past history?

On occasion a question is asked about why a certain thing is done the way it is. At this time, I’d like to spend a few moments and answer why we follow the practice of chanting the Communion Antiphon and verses and do not substitute another “song” as folks come up to receive Our Lord in Holy Communion. To begin, the first and ultimate authority regarding the way Mass is offered is the Church herself. It is her prerogative to govern and control how, why and when the Mass is offered the way it is. These norms are found in the document called “The General Instruction of the Roman Missal” (GIRM, for short). As such, they are not just suggestions, but are authoritative rules and regulations that are to be followed whether the individual priest, deacon, bishop or member of the laity like, dislike, agree with or disagree with them. For some today, this concept is very difficult given our subjective and “option oriented” culture. With the promulgation of the Third Edition of the Roman Missal in 2011, a new more accurate translation of the GIRM was promulgated.

In the new GIRM are changes with regard to what is sung at Mass and when. Paragraph 87 states: “In the Dioceses of the United States of America, there are four options for singing at Communion: (1) the antiphon from the Missal or the antiphon with its Psalm from the Graduale Romanum, as set to music there or in another musical setting; (2) the antiphon with Psalm from the Graduale Simplex of the liturgical time; (3) a chant from another collection of Psalms and antiphons, approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop, including Psalms arranged in responsorial or metrical forms; (4) some other suitable liturgical chant approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop. This is sung either by the choir alone or by the choir or a cantor with the people.”

The thing to note is that the four options are listed in order of preference by the Church, meaning that Option One is the ideal and is meant to be the norm. If for serious reason, that norm is not attainable (in parishes with no musicians or musicians with lesser degrees of skill), then Option 2 should be normative, and so forth down the line. Our Lady of Grace is blessed to have the skilled musicians which make

it possible for us to make Option One normative at our weekend Masses. All are encouraged to lift their voices in the chanting of the Communion Antiphon (which is found in the bulletin). One of the many spiritual benefits that I have noticed as a result of our doing the mind of the Church is a marked increase in reverence during Holy Communion. I personally attribute this to the beauty of hearing the words of Sacred Scripture echoing throughout the Church as we, God’s People, dare to approach the Altar to receive Our Lord’s Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in Holy Communion. One final note: I know that some folks will be tempted to bring up that at “St. Slippers By the Bedside” parish or any other parish they know, they don’t follow the directives of the GIRM. I can only say that I am not the Pastor at any of these parishes and that those entrusted to the Pastoral Ministry at these parishes will have to answer to God, as will I have to give an account for my pastoral care of the souls entrusted to me here at Our Lady of Grace. I hope this has been helpful for us all to learn the how and why of what we do during Holy Mass. Oremus pro invicem! (Let us pray for one another)

Parish Life Center – Buy a Chair Program As we move forward with the Parish Life Center project, it is time to start looking at furniture for the Banquet Hall and the meeting rooms. We will need approximately 320 chairs for the facility at an average cost of $35.00 each. If 320 families or individuals purchase a chair we can cover the cost of the chairs in no time. If you can help by buying a chair, make your check payable to OLG Church and mark it for PLC-Chair. You may also place it in the offertory basket at Mass or drop it off in the church office during regular business hours. Check the bulletin weekly to see the chairs disappear.

Thanksgiving Baskets Update Great news … the Thanksgiving bags have all been given out! We are confident that the 100 families will be well fed. Thank you for your generosity and kindness.

If you have a bag, please plan to return it to the church on either November 15/16 or November 22/23. Bags may place near the Pieta statue inside the Market Street doors. If you didn’t get a bag and want to help, we

still need financial donations for the purchase of the turkeys. Please make your check payable to OLG and indicate Thanksgiving Baskets in the memo line. You may place it in the collection basket, drop it by the church office or mail it in.

Please note: Since we also have on-going food collections to support the food bank at the Greensboro Urban Ministry, please do not put your Thanksgiving food in those boxes!

2014 Diocesan Support Appeal— Thank you!

Your generous response to the Diocesan Support Appeal (DSA) enhances our ability to live out our mission to serve and bring good works to the

people of our community. It is an opportunity to express our gratitude to God for all the blessings He has bestowed on us, and an opportunity to live our call as Disciples of Christ. The generosity you chose to share with others in the Diocese of Charlotte through your support of the DSA is an affirmation of our call to be “salt and light” to others. As we enter into the final months of 2014 we ask that you remember to complete your pledge prior to December 31st.

Please pray for all those supported by the DSA, and know that you and your loved ones are remembered

in our daily prayers, as well.

11:00 AM Sunday Mass Servers If you have attended the weekly Sunday 11AM Mass you know just how truly breathtaking this particular Mass is here at OLG. And yet, to fittingly and properly offer the Holy

Mass each week in this fashion takes much hard work and dedication not only from the priest and deacon, but also from our organist and choir director as well as our choir, lectors, ushers and our altar servers.

Over the last year, it has become increasingly difficult to find servers on the grade school level able to commit to serving at this Mass. In order to help alleviate this problem and to build up the existing servers, I’m asking for anyone ages 18-60, who would like to learn to serve Holy Mass and be willing to serve regularly at the 11 AM Mass, to please contact Olivia Henson at [email protected] or send me an email at [email protected] and we will set up a training session.

Don’t worry! We will train you every step of the way! My goal is to build a corp of servers for this Mass who want to serve the Lord and help enhance the beauty and sacredness of the Holy Mass. Thanks!

Extraordinary Form Mass Servers Any boys interested in serving at or learning to serve the Extraordinary Form of the Mass can attend an introductory practice every Wednesday at 6:00 PM at Our Lady of Grace.

Eucharistic Ministers Needed OLG needs Eucharistic Ministers to serve the sick at Moses Cone and Wesley Long hospitals. If you are looking for a way to use your time and talents, consider this ministry. Our team will visit the sick on Monday afternoons. With flexible volunteer dates, you can pick and choose which Monday each month is best for you. Please contact Albert Bassi at 336-259-5824.

Furniture Needed The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is in urgent need of usable furniture to be given to families in need including kitchen sets, appliances, living room and bedroom furniture, and box springs and mattresses. Please call 210-3745 to arrange for pick up. Verification letters of your donations will be provided. Thank You!

Hearing Impaired? We were recently approached by a deaf parishioner seeking a way to understand what is being said at Mass. We hope to provide a solution and want to know if others have this need. If you, a friend, or family member is deaf or hearing impaired, please contact the church office and let us know so we can work toward a solution.

Van Drivers Needed Would you be willing to spend an extra few hours every six to eight weeks to help our parishioners who no longer drive? Thanks to a generous donation Our Lady of Grace now has a newer model easy-to drive Honda Odyssey van that we use to transport riders to 11:00 AM Mass each week. You can light a six day candle for $5 to shine the love of Jesus on a special request or petition.

valedictorian or salutatorians at their local high school.

Our students excel!

Come and see our new 17,000 square foot school and find out how we can help your student succeed. We offer challenging academics

and a faith-filled learning environment to engage and challenge all learners.

Come find out why at one of our upcoming open houses or schedule a personalized tour by calling

Karen Hornfeck at 275-1522. OLG School is located at 201 South Chapman St. in Greensboro.

ANGEL TREES Are Here The Angel Trees are setup in the back of the church and will remain throughout the weekend until all cards are selected. Please help us to make this a special Christmas for all of our

Angel Tree children and families. Your generosity can make a huge difference in the life of a child.

The process is very easy, just follow the steps below: • Select a card from the tree. • Provide your name and phone number to one of the volunteers. • Go shopping. Use the wish list as a guide or select other age

appropriate gifts. Remember, this will be the only gifts these children or family receive, please be as generous as possible.

• Attached the card to your gifts. • Return the gifts to church on the weekend of November 15 & 16

or to the church office by Tuesday, November 18.

Any questions, call Julie Justice at 708-1131. We have 4 Special Angel Tree Requests

1. One family has requested Duck Boots for working outside, they need a men’s size 10 ½. These boots cost approximately $200.

2. One family has requested a vacuum cleaner to clean their apartment. They cannot afford to buy one.

3. One family has requested a large capacity dryer. Their dryer has died and they cannot afford to get one.

4. One family has requested a microwave for a family of 5.

Prayer for Persecuted Christians Priest: Let us pray.

O God, our refuge and our strength, look down with mercy upon the people who cry to Thee, especially those who are suffering from the current persecutions by militant Islam; and by the intercession of the glorious and Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of Saint Joseph her spouse, of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the saints, in Thy mercy and goodness hear our prayers for the conversion of their persecutors, and for the liberty and protection of our suffering brothers and sisters in Christ. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray: and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Priest: Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, All: Have mercy on us.

Priest: Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, All: Have mercy on us.
