Welcome to Advent, the season to prepare with awe and wonder
for the Feast of the Incarnation of Jesus – born to us as Savior and Brother. It is a season to prepare for His return at the end of time. It is also a moment to remind ourselves that our individual judgment day is coming, too, when we will be called to give an account for all that God has given to us during our lifetimes. In other words, Advent is a steward’s season.
Our readings for the first week of Advent waste no time in call-ing our urgent attention to these themes of reflection and prepara-tion. They seem to shout, “Wake up! Get ready!” and offer us some practical advice as we enter into this season.
The Gospel, from Luke, warns, “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life.” How easy it is to lose focus on our Lord either by too much indulgence in our lives or by too much worry about our lives. During Advent, we Christian stewards must ask ourselves some hard questions. Am I staying faithful to my prayer life? Am I using my energy and skills to serve others? Am I overly con-cerned about material gain? Am I relying on my “stuff” or my investments as my source of comfort or security? Am I living for the moment or for the coming of the Lord?
Get ready Christian stewards! He’s coming! Let us prepare with awe and wonder.

Leadership reports Administration
The net income of $120,000 for our Fiesta exceeded our goal; the parish is donating a portion of this to local charities through the OLA Alternative Market. Pastoral Council will convene next month to begin a dialogue about restructuring Leadership Councils. Community Life
This council is mobilizing a committee to organize a parish photo directory for the 75th anniversary of the parish in 2022. Anyone interested in joining the committee may contact Jean McKenna in the parish office. Photography will begin on campus in Janu-ary. Extra Thanksgiving meals from OLA were dis-tributed to local agencies serving the homeless. Formation
This council is planning more sessions of Elephant in the Room on topics related to the challenges of modern life and family values. The audience will be broadened to include all adults. OLA School spon-sored a successful food drive before Thanksgiving.
Outreach
The Pastoral Council has just approved a new project to assemble (off-campus) and distribute bagged lunches to local homeless individuals on the streets of Claremont. They had been traveling with difficul-ty to Holy Name of Mary Parish in La Verne. Christ-mas outreach programs begin the first weekend of December. JustAct Ministry will sponsor a second session of Parables of Jesus in January 2022.

This community is planning Las Posadas on campus Dec. 15-23.

This community will soon install a renovated version of the Christmas star on the church tower.
Worship
Eucharistic Adoration on First Friday, Dec. 3, is now extended until 10:30 a.m. (see Page 4). The postcard with the Advent/Christmas calendar has been mailed to all parishioners, including Masses for Immaculate Conception, Dec. 8, a holy day of obligation.

Altar Server training in December
Altar Server orientation and training (or re-training) is sched-uled Friday, Dec. 3 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. OR Saturday, Dec. 11, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. NOTE: Only one session is required. Candi-dates must be at least 9 years old and entering fourth grade in school next year. Also they must have received both Baptism and First Communion.
Forms are available at the parish office. Remember , this ministry is all about prayer and service. If the student feels called to serve at the altar, please come. A parent/guardian must accompa-ny the child.
Catholic Campaign for Human Development
The annual collection for the Catholic Cam-paign for Human Development will be taken up the weekend of Nov. 27-28 at all Masses. It allocates funds to community projects that promote its mis-sion of creating jobs in low-income neighborhoods while adhering to the moral and social teaching of the Church. Bishop David O’Connell is the chair-man of this program sponsored by the U. S. Confer-ence of Catholic Bishops.
Amazing Greys invitation The Amazing Greys at Holy Name of Mary
invites seniors to join them Tuesday, Dec. 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Sacred Heart Hall. Trevor Thomson will provide a musical program for Advent and Christmas. Light refreshments will be served.

6 outreach Highlights from the Alternative Market
Claremont Meals On Wheels: This is a local organization founded in 1972 (initiated at OLA). It utilizes caring volunteers to deliver hot lunches and promote social wellness for older adults and anyone who is disabled or chronically ill. A total of 18,542 meals were served and 5,163 volunteer hours completed in 2020! (It is notable that this effort never missed a meal during the pandemic.) Payment for meals is assessed on a sliding scale based on financial status. The representative even mentioned that an grandson out-of-state was pay-ing for his grandmother. Family members can also request a wellness check on a relative.
All Our Children: This agency was founded by OLA Alumna Rachel Ranney, who was inspired by a religion lesson at OLA School. It cares for orphans on both sides of the civil war in Ethiopia. You can help provide shoes, books, food and school supplies to maintain nutrition and educa-tion essential to thriving youth. The group oper-ates under difficult circumstances with a strong connection to a local church.

Highlights (See also Page 6) Pomona Valley Habitat for Humanity: As with many of the or-ganizations in the Market, there are opportunities to make donations or to volunteer to help. They serve the east end of LA County and the west end of San Bernardino County to build affordable housing with volunteer labor and “sweat equity” from the prospective home-owners. They also offer “A Brush with Kindness” to help low-income homeowners impacted by age, disa-bility or family circumstances who struggle to maintain the exterior of their homes. Through the alternative Market you can help finance a door or window, a gallon of paint, a ham-mer or box of nails, a nail apron, or even a roll of duct tape!
7 outreach Angel Tree is back!
This popular pro-gram returns to OLA to help 225 children whose parent is incarcerated. Sign up in the auditori-um beginning Dec. 5, or go online now at www.olaclaremont.org. There you will be able to give a $25 sponsorship that includes a WalMart gift card, the Christmas message from the parent, a Gospel booklet and a coupon for a free bible. Other donations are always welcome to defray expenses for the program in general. Email Deacon Jim Allgaier at [email protected] if you have questions.
Adopt-A-Family Adopt-A-Family will be in the auditorium after
all Saturday and Sunday Masses in December (before Christmas).
You may adopt families for Christmas presents and Christmas dinner nominated by Uncommon Good, St. Vincent de Paul Society and the San Gabriel Regional Center.
There is also the possibility of partnering with another donor to meet the expense. You will be giv-en information about the family and options for providing a wonderful Christmas to local residents struggling to meet the cost of living, much less a holiday. Last year OLA adopted over 150 families.

Baptisms Please contact the Faith Formation Center for information about the Sacrament of Baptism. Baptism schedule: First Saturday (Spanish); Second Saturday (None); Third and Fourth Saturdays (English).
Weddings Congratulations! Please call the parish office at least six months ahead for preparation, scheduling, and an appointment with a priest. Weddings are scheduled Saturdays at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m.
