Our Lady of Perpetual Help 2nd Sunday of Advent December 10, 2017

THOUGHTS FROM THE PASTOR Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent a season of longing and waiting. As we await the coming of the Lord we read in the second Letter of Saint Peter, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be found out.” So my friends let us not be caught sleeping but rather let us do the work of the Lord while it is time (like right now) for tomorrow is not a guarantee.

PRAY FOR PEACE Every week we hear of another

horrific act of violence. One must ask when did we become such a violent society? Love is in need of love and peace is in need of peace; the peace God has to offer. Please re-member that I invite you to join me every Friday of this year to take some time, maybe five minutes or half an hour or an hour, whatever time you may have and spend it in prayer for peace. You do nor have to be in church, although the church is always available to you, prayer can happen anywhere you are. You can be alone or get together with some friends. Let us just do this and use this great tool that the Lord has given us and make our world a place of love and peace. When good people come together in prayer wonderful things will happen. Let us lift our prayers for peace. Remember the Lord says I will hear the prayer of the faithful person.

Stewardship thought for the Week

“Prepare the way of the Lord”

How do we “prepare the way of the Lord?” This can only be accomplished by thinking of the other person before ourselves. When we do this we can began to see our Lord in our neighbor.

We currently have $31,737.59 in our building fund. This money is part of our Roof Fund. We need $100,000.00 for a new roof on the old school building. The patch that we have on the roof has reached the end of its warranty. It could fail at any moment, so we really need to get this roof fixed.

I am your humble Servant,

Fr. Charles A. Mosley

WHAT ARE THEY SAYING ABOUT THE

CHURCH TODAY

In this column I will answer questions about the Church or the parish; so what ever you want to know about the Church or the parish, please just ask. In addition we will sometimes look at issues that affect our church or our members. We have our Advent season today I will offer some thought on the season.

Our Lady of Guadalupe

On December 12, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (this Tuesday) commemorates the four apparitions of Mary in 1531 to Juan Diego on Tepeyac hill near Mexico City.

Appearing like a Mexican princess, Mary told him that a church should be built there. When Juan told the bishop, he demanded proof. Mary sent Juan to gather some roses (unusual in December) to present to the bishop. When Juan opens his cloak (tilma) to give the roses to the bishop, they also discovered a painted image of the Blessed Virgin imprinted on the tilma, which is now

preserved in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. Under this title, Mary was declared patron of New Spain (1710), of Latin America (1910), Queen of Mexico and Empress of the Americas (1945) and patroness of the Americas (1999).

Pope Francis says, “When the image of the Virgin appeared on the tilma of Juan Diego, it was the prophecy of an embrace: Mary’s embrace of all the people of the vast expanses of America, the people who already lived there, and those who were yet to come. Mary’s embrace showed what America, North and South, is called to be: “a land where different peoples come together; a land prepared to accept human life at every stage, from the mother’s womb to old age; a land which welcomes immigrants, and the poor and the marginalized, in every age.” “O gracious and loving Mary, Lady of Guadalupe, through your presence make us aware of our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son. May Christ send us blessings of peace and harmony, and may we receive love and the healing we need to get closer to Him.” Pope St. John XXIII (October 12, 1961)

TITHING A reporter once asked Mother Teresa, “What can we do to bring peace to the world?” Mother gave this simple answer: “Go home and love your family.” Maybe that is where we need to start being the servant. BECOME A BUSINESS PARTNER WITH GOD
