We have created new technologies eversince. Faced with challenges in the NorthSea, the oil industry had to come upwith safe and reliable solutions for thedevelopment and operation of deepwaterelds and challenging reservoirs. AkerSolutions and other players in thatregion became pioneers in subsea elddevelopment and increased oil recovery.

In 1985 one Aker Solutions engineercame up with the idea of moving gascompression equipment from the platformtopside and placing it at the bottom ofthe sea. The subsea gas compressionsolution generates pressure which allowsthe hydrocarbons to travel through thepipelines to a platform or receiving terminalonshore. Thirty years later, his visionaryidea rst captured with a pencil on a

paper serviette is now becoming realityat a deepwater eld in the Norwegian Sea.

Our innovative solutions are both big andsmall. The development of high integritywell intervention systems is a response tothe aging installed base of subsea wellsand the operators need for the increasedrecovery of hydrocarbons. Our wellintervention system acts as the multi-tool

within the operators tool-box enablingeasy well access for maintenance andoptimisation work to be performed downhole. A small device that can make amajor difference.

A systemengineers main role is to optimise thesubsea production system for installationand production. It is paramount in thisrespect, to fully recognise the clientsrequirements and needs, but to also

understand that product capabilities areequally important. The goal is to safelyand efciently install the equipment whileachieving high production availability andensuring the safety integrity of the system.Our system engineers understand theworkings and criticality of our completeproduct portfolio. They have a broadknowledge of trees, manifolds, wellheads,umbilicals, workover, and tie-in systems,as well as the tools and control systemsthat operate them. They also acknowledgethe importance of preparing for a smoothexecution for third party intervention and

the framework and principles thatengineering, material philosophy, anddocumentation requirements rely upon.System engineering provides the holisticframework that is a key success criterionfor our clients.

Typically system engineering sets thefoundation at the concept stage of aproject and follows up on this framework

throughout the design, manufacturing,testing and nal hand over to the client.System engineering maintains a globaloverview of the system delivery at alltimes. Close cooperation with the clientis essential and a major success factor isbuilding trust and open communicationprocesses during the project.

Aker Solutions system engineeringdeliverables include design basis, materialselection, master document lists, masterequipment lists, RAM analysis, life cycleinformation plans, schematics, test

programmes and a range of other systemanalyses. During the project start-uprequirements are set and based uponthe contract and applicable standardsprovided by the system engineering team.

As the subsea industry goes deeper,further, and to more extreme temperatures,

Technology innovationOne thing is very clear in the oil and gas industry.Innovation is going to play a crucial role in maximisingoil and gas recovery in challenging environments, innew eld developments and in driving the costs down.

Aker Solutions has developed state-of-the-art innovativetechnologies, which we believe holds the key to ourfuture success.

Subsea gas compression

Compressing gas on subsea installations representsa considerable technological accomplishment forthe industry as this has never been done before.

Aker Solutions subsea gas compression technologyrepresents a cost-effective quantum leap thatcontributes to signicant improvements in recoveryrates and the lifetime of gas elds.

A unique solution was needed to extract more gasfrom a eld as it declines over time. Research foundthat by placing the compressor closer to the well thatmore gas could be extracted, which in turn booststhe recovery rate of the reservoir. In order to meetour customers need, we developed a complete andpatented compression system, which is a collaborationof our well proven and qualied technologies. Thistechnology is now being utilised by Statoil on the OrmenLange subsea gas compression pilot station and theinaugural sgard subsea gas compression system.These projects encompass the combined excellence ofsubsea processing technology in the world today.

Modularised workover systems

Aker Solutions latest generation modularised workoversystem is a standardised state-of-the-art systemdening the future for this range of subsea products.The system holds a number of unique qualities thatrepresent a true step change for the oil and gas industry.

For the very rst time a single system can perform lightwell intervention operations on any subsea tree from anysubsea vendor. This is performed with the highest safetystandards and no intellectual property infringementstowards other parties.

Operated by semi-submersible rigs, drill ships or lightintervention vessels, our light well intervention workoversystem provides large bore access to any well, whichfacilitates coiled tubing and wireline operations.

Statoil and Aker Oileld Services have taken advantageof our standardised light well intervention system onthe Vigdis North East and Tulip projects, respectively.The Vigdis North East has used our workover system

to perform normal start-up operations for elddevelopment and lifecycle well maintenance for vedifferent elds in the North Sea. The rst workoversystem to be installed on Aker Oileld ServicesSkandi Akerfor the Tulip project enables a vessel to

perform riser based light well intervention activities.The emergency disconnect package and lower riserpackage act as the main barrier towards the well whileperforming intervention operations. In an emergencysituation the robust valves will be able to seal the well,disconnect the riser system from the well andre-establish a safe state of operation.

Our workover systems are a multi-use tool whichsupports the installation of equipment and preparesthe well for production. During eld life, workoverequipment is used during the maintenance of subseawells to improve oil recovery.

We believe these innovative solutions are just thebeginning for Aker Solutions. With new projects comingonline, new opportunities arising, the world is our oyster

and it is our job to provide innovation solutions to theoffshore industry in the future.

Fast track projectsOver the past few years fast-track projects have takenoff on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. As operatorslook for faster and more economical ways to extract oilfrom smaller or time critical elds, we have looked athow projects can be executed faster while maintainingthe same high quality. With Statoil, we have developed astandard catalogue of subsea production systems (SPS)to meet this need.

The beauty of this approach is that the conceptualand tendering stages are compressed. Since thedevelopment is based on standard equipment, criticalsupply items can be pre-ordered earlier, the work

processes simplied, and the drawings re-used. Theresult is faster project execution and lower costs, factorswhich are important when developing smaller elds ortying in time critical resources to existing installations.

In June 2011, Skuld became the rst project followingthis approach awarded to Aker Solutions by Statoil.The initial contract was for three template-manifoldstructures, 11 subsea trees, a control system, a tie-insystem and rental tooling. Since the initial award of theSkuld project Aker Solutions has also won fast-trackprojects for the Svalin and Vilje South elds with Statoil.

Other operators are also following the same approach.The Dong Trym and Oselvar projects awarded to AkerSolutions in 2008 were based on standard designsexecuted by one project team. In 2011, Total awardedthe Atla project to Aker Solutions. This is a highly exiblesatellite concept based on standard technology whichenables both conventional eld developments andutilisation of the keeper well concept where explorationor appraisal wells are converted to production wells.

Internationally, fast track developments have beenexecuted as part of our RapidSolution programme

where customers have called off standard wellsets(wellheads, trees, controls and tie-in systems) fromour inventory of standard components andmanufacturing slots.

As many of the larger oil and gas elds mature on theNorwegian Continental Shelf, fast-track projects forsmaller elds or time critical resources are where the oiland gas industry is heading in the future. We are wellequipped, with standardised solutions and experiencedpersonnel, to help our customers succeed in this quest.

Large conventional projectsAker Solutions is a leader in subsea engineering,manufacturing and installation activities. We haveexperience with developing large conventional projectsin every corner of the globe, working with various clientsto increase oil recovery.

In the North Sea, a major milestone we delivered waswell set number 100 to the giant Troll eld in 2011. Thisgiant eld is set to produce for many decades to come

and is a cornerstone of Aker Solutions subsea historyand future.

Aker Solutions started developing new technicallyqualied products for Eni Norges largest projectdevelopment, Goliat. Located in the Barents Sea, ina very harsh environment the Goliat eld is subjectedto sub-zero temperatures and high winds. The newproducts include innovative environmental monitoringsystems to protect the areas abundant sea and bird life,which is a highly important focus within this area.

In West Africa, Aker Solutions delivered its largestdeepwater project so far to the giant eld, Dalia. Initiallythe project started out with 42 well sets in the rst phaseof the project and was later expanded to 78 well sets.

Providing the subsea production system for Asias rstsubsea deepwater development and bringing a majordeepwater discovery online in record time in a regionwhere the knowledge base and infrastructure for suchdevelopments had just began to take off, was a majorfeat for Aker Solutions. The Kikeh project enabledour Malaysian operations the opportunity to deliver alarge world class subsea deepwater SPS to the clientMurphy Oil Sabah. The original scope of supply wasenhanced with the award of the Kikeh extensions/Siakap North-Petai due to our strong presence anddevelopment in Malaysia which ensured deliveries were

well coordinated with local client schedules.

Aker Solutions was the principle subsea contractorof Indias rst subsea gas eld, located in the KG-D6block in the Bay of Bengal. At the time the KG-D6 wasthe largest subsea project worked on by Aker Solutions,with the deepest water depth and shortest deliveryschedules.

Our experience spans from shallow water to theultra-deep and from tropical conditions to the harshconditions of the Arctic. We have the experience andthe know-how to get our customers to where theywant to be.

We take personal responsibility or health, saety and environment (HSE) and

delivering quality results very seriously.

Unsafe operations jeopardise the safetyof our employees and undermine ourefciency. Over the past years our subseabusiness has placed HSE at the top ofthe agenda to continuously improveour standards.

We believe that all incidents can beprevented and strive continuously forzero accidents to personnel, material and

non-material assets. To ensure our HSEmessage reaches employees at everycorner of the globe we have a set oftailor-made HSE measures. These includethe Just Care rules with the purpose ofpreventing injuries and saving lives, localHSE networks, annual self-assessmentsand a new HSE leadership programme toensure the highest standards are alwaysmaintained. These initiatives have amindset driven focus taking lessons learntfrom serious misses across Aker Solutionsand guring out how these incidents canbe eliminated in the future.

Since we began the journey improvingHSE performance our serious near missesand lost time incidents have drasticallyreduced. We see that HSE and qualitygo hand in hand, without one you cannotsucceed with the other. Our vision is to

now bring our quality principles up to thesame levels as our HSE standards byusing our HSE approach as a roadmapfor quality improvement.

Employees are the key to our success.We spent time travelling the globeaddressing our HSE vision, from toplevel management through all of thelevels of our organisation. For quality we
