Tracer CH.530™

Communications Overview

The Trane CH.530 control system thatruns the chiller consists of severalelements:

• The main processor collects data, status, and diagnostic information, and communicates commands tothe starter module and the LLID(Low Level Intelligent Device) bus.The main processor has an integraldisplay (EasyView or DynaView).

• Higher-level modules (e.g., starter)exist only as necessary to supportsystem-level control andcommunications. The startermodule provides control of thestarter when starting, running, andstopping the chiller motor. It alsoprocesses its own diagnostics andprovides motor and compressorprotection.

• Low Level Intelligent Device (LLID)bus. The main processorcommunicates to each input andoutput device (e.g., temperatureand pressure sensors, low voltagebinary inputs, analog input/output)all connected to a four-wire bus, rather than the conventionalcontrol architecture of signal wiresfor each device.

• The communication interface to abuilding automation system (BAS).

• A service tool to provide all serviceand maintenance capabilities.

Main processor and service toolsoftware is downloadable fromwww.Trane.com.

EasyView or DynaView provides busmanagement. It has the task ofrestarting the link, or filling in forwhat it sees as “missing” deviceswhen normal communications havebeen degraded. Use of TechView maybe required.

The CH.530 uses the IPC3 protocolbased on RS485 signal technologyand communicating at 19.2 Kbaud, toallow three rounds of data persecond on a 64-device network. Atypical four-compressor RTAC willhave approximately 50 devices.

Most diagnostics are handled by theEasyView or DynaView. If atemperature or pressure is reportedout of range by an LLID, theEasyView or DynaView processesthis information and calls out thediagnostic. The individual LLIDs arenot responsible for any diagnosticfunctions. The only exception to thisis the Starter module.

Note: It is imperative that the CH.530Service Tool (TechView)be used tofacilitate the replacement of any LLIDor reconfigure any chillercomponent. TechView is discussedlater in this section.

Controls Interface

Each chiller is equipped with eitherthe EasyView or DynaView interfaceto the CH.530. EasyView providesbasic monitoring and controlfunctions in a language-independentformat, with an LED display in anenclosure. DynaView has thecapability to display additionalinformation to the advancedoperator, including the ability toadjust settings. Multiple screens areavailable and text is presented inmultiple languages as ordered.

TechView can be connected to eitherthe EasyView or DynaView module, and provides further data, adjustment capabilities, anddiagnostics information usingdownloadable software.

Page 6: Owner Manual - Trane Hong Kong

RLC-SVU01B-E46

The EasyView interface to the CH.530consists of a display in a 9.75" wide,8" high, and 1.6" deep [250 mm x 205mm x 41 mm] enclosure. Theenclosure contains a circuit card anda weathertight connection for theRS232 TechView. Use of TechView isdiscussed in a separate publication.

The LED display contains basicinformation for machine monitoringand control. The informationpresented uses symbols and islanguage-independent.

Outputs: Display

Default Display: During normaloperation, Evaporator Leaving-WaterTemperature is shown.

Set Point Display: The EvaporatorLeaving-Water Temperature Set Pointis displayed if the increment (+) ordecrement (-) key is pressed. TheEvaporator Leaving-Water Set Pointwill remain on the screen for threeseconds after increment ordecrement is released.NOTE: Even if the chiller is in an “IceBuilding Mode” operation, thedisplay will continue to show theLeaving Water Temperature and theLeaving Water Temperature (ChilledWater) Setpoint. It will NOT displaythe Evaporator Entering WaterTemperature or the Ice TerminationSetpoint even when they are activeduring the “Ice Building” mode ofoperation.

Diagnostic and Interlock Display:When in a diagnostic or interlockcondition, the front panel willcontinue to show the default or setpoint display as appropriate. When ina diagnostic condition (servicewrench LED flashes) or interlockcondition (interlock LED flashes),simultaneously depressing theincrement (+) and decrement (-) keyswill cause the most-severe activediagnostic or interlock to bedisplayed in code for 3-5 seconds, after which the front panel will revertto the Evaporator Leaving-WaterTemperature. Only the most-recentdiagnostic will be retained. The Tranestandard 3-digit diagnostic codes arelisted at the end of this section. Thediagnostic readout should be notedand is for the use of Trane service.

Auto LEDThe Auto LED is used to indicate theposition of the AUTO/STOP keys asthough they were a physical toggleswitch. When the AUTO key isdepressed, the Auto LED will be lit. Ifthe unit cannot enter the Auto mode, that information will be conveyed bythe lighting of either the diagnosticLED or the interlock LED. When theSTOP key is depressed, the Auto LEDwill extinguish.

Set Point LED The Set PointLED is on solid when the display isshowing “Evaporator Leaving-WaterSet Point.”

Interlock LED The interlock LED flashes when thereis an interlock condition.

Interlock is used to indicate that themachine is prevented from running, due to an external status that theoperator could probably correct, andis not related to a chiller orcomponent failure. The interlockconditions for RTAC are as follows:

Interlock Condition Code

No Chilled-Water Flow ED

External Auto/Stop 100

Low condenser startinhibit 200

BAS Auto/Stop 300

Low-Ambient Start Inhibit 200

1BAS here and elsewhere in this manual refersto the Trane Tracer™ Equipment Controller.

The interlock LED will stop flashingwhen the condition that preventsmachine operation is corrected. Noreset is required.

Service LED The service LED flashes when thereis a diagnostic that is not an interlockcondition.

This is the standard diagnosticindication of the machine. Contact aqualified service agency to correctthe problem. Before calling, pressthe (+) and (-) keys simultaneously todetermine the diagnostic code.Record this code and report it to theservice agency. If you suspect that anuisance trip has occurred, thediagnostic can be reset. (See sectionon diagnostic reset.)

Inputs:

Increment Key (+)Pressing the increment key while theset point light is off will cause it toturn on continuously and display theEvaporator Leaving-WaterTemperature Set Point for threeseconds.

Pressing the increment key while theSet Point light is on will increase itby 0.1 degree (F or C).

Holding the increment key down willincrease it repeatedly at a rate of5°F/sec [2.77°C/sec] until the SetPoint is equal to the EvaporatorLeaving-Water Set Point machinemaximum

Decrement Key (-)Pressing the decrement key whilethe set point light is off will cause itto turn on continuously and thedisplay will display the EvaporatorLeaving-Water Temperature.

Pressing the decrement key whilethe Set Point light is on will causethe Set Point to decrease by 0.1degree (F or C).

Holding the decrement key down willdecrease the set point repeatedly ata rate of 2°F/sec [0.56°C/sec] until theset point is equal to the EvaporatorLeaving-Water Set Point relativeminimum.

AUTO Key ( | )Pressing the AUTO key will send arequest to the chiller to turn on. If noother device or condition ispreventing the chiller from startingand there is a need to cool, thechiller will attempt a start. (See AutoLED and diagnostic reset for furtherdescription.)

STOP Key (O)Pressing the STOP key will send arequest to the chiller to stop. Thechiller will then begin the shutdownsequence and the Auto LED willextinguish.

Diagnostic Reset

If the machine is in adiagnostic condition(LED is flashing), atransition from Stop to Auto willreset the diagnostic. If the machine isin the Stop State (Auto LED off),depressing the AUTO key will resetall diagnostics. If the machine is inthe Auto State (Auto LED on), it mustbe put in the Stop state andsequenced back to Auto in order toreset.

SI vs. English (I-P)The Leaving-Water Set Point and theLeaving-Water Temperature aredisplayed in either SI or English (I-P)units as determined by theappropriate setting within theprocessor. A right-justified C or F willindicate SI or English.

Power-Up TestOn power-up, a means to test thedisplay and annunciators is required. To demonstrate that all segmentsand LEDs can be lighted, EasyViewwill light all segments andannunciators for approximately 2seconds. To demonstrate that noelements are stuck on, EasyView willturn off all segments andannunciators for approximately 2seconds. Normal operation willfollow.

DynaView Interface

DynaView Interface

The DynaView and EasyView sharethe same enclosure design:weatherproof and durable plastic foruse as a stand-alone device on theoutside of the unit or mountednearby.

The display on DynaView is a 1/4VGA display with a resistive touchscreen and an LED backlight. Thedisplay area is approximately 4 inches wide by 3 inches high [102 mm x 60 mm].

Key Functions

In this touch screen application, keyfunctions are determined completelyby software, and change dependingupon the subject matter currentlybeing displayed. The basic touch-screen functions are outlined below.

Radio ButtonsRadio buttons show one menuchoice among two or morealternatives, all visible. (It is theAUTO button in Figure 2.) The radio-button model mimics the buttonsused on old-fashioned radios toselect stations. When one is pressed, the one that was previously pressed“pops out” and the new station isselected. In the DynaView model thepossible selections are eachassociated with a button. Theselected button is darkened, presented in reverse video toindicate it is the selected choice. Thefull range of possible choices, as wellas the current choice, is always inview.

Spin Value ButtonsSpin values are used to allow avariable set point to be changed, such as leaving-water set point. Thevalue increases or decreases bytouching the increment (+) ordecrement (-) arrows.

Action ButtonsAction buttons appear temporarilyand provide the user with a choicesuch as Enter or Cancel.

Hot LinksHot links are used to navigate fromone view to another view.

File-Folder TabsFile-folder tabs are used to select ascreen of data. Just like tabs in a filefolder, these serve to title the folderor screen selected, as well as toprovide navigation to other screens. In DynaView, the tabs are in one rowacross the top of the display. Thefolder tabs are separated from therest of the display by a horizontalline. Vertical lines separate the tabsfrom each other. The folder that isselected has no horizontal line underits tab, thereby making it look like apart of the current folder (as wouldan open folder in a file cabinet). Theuser selects a screen of informationby touching the appropriate tab.

The file folder tabs across the top ofthe screen are used to select thevarious display screens.Scroll arrows are added if more filetabs (choices) are available. Whenthe tabs are at the left most position, the left navigator will not show andonly navigation to the right will bepossible. Likewise when the rightmost screen is selected, only leftnavigation will be possible. The main body of the screen is usedfor description text, data, setpoints,or keys (touch sensitive areas). TheChiller Mode is displayed here. The double up arrows cause a page-by-page scroll either up or down. Thesingle arrow causes a line by linescroll to occur. At the end of thepage, the appropriate scroll bar willdisappear.A double arrow pointing to the rightindicates more information isavailable about the specific item onthat same line. Pressing it will bringyou to a subscreen that will presentthe information or allow changes tosettings. The bottom of the screen (FixedDisplay) is present in all screens andcontains the following functions. Theleft circular area is used to reducethe contrast/viewing angle of thedisplay. The right circular area isused to increase the contrast/viewingangle of the display. The contrast

may require re-adjustment atambient temperatures significantlydifferent from those present at lastadjustment. The other functions are critical tomachine operation. The AUTO andSTOP keys are used to enable ordisable the chiller. The key selected isin black (reverse video). The chillerwill stop when the STOP key istouched and after completing theRun Unload mode.Touching the AUTO key will enablethe chiller for active cooling if nodiagnostic is present. (A separateaction must be taken to clear activediagnostics.)The AUTO and STOP keys takeprecedence over the Enter andCancel keys. (While a setting is beingchanged, AUTO and STOP keys arerecognized even if Enter or Cancelhas not been pressed.)The ALARMS button appears onlywhen an alarm is present, and blinks(by alternating between normal andreverse video) to draw attention to adiagnostic condition. Pressing theALARMS button takes you to thecorresponding tab for additionalinformation.

Description

The chiller is not running and cannot run without intervention. Furtherinformation is provided by the sub-mode:

Chiller is stopped by DynaView (or EasyView). Stop button commandcannot be remotely overridden.

Chiller is stopped by DynaView (or EasyView). Panic Stop (bypressing Stop button twice) - previous shutdown was manuallycommanded to shutdown immediately without a run-unload orpumpdown cycle - cannot be remotely overridden.

The chiller is stopped by a diagnostic that requires manualintervention to reset.

The chiller is currently being inhibited from starting (and running), butmay be allowed to start if the inhibiting or diagnostic condition iscleared. Further information is provided by the sub-mode:

The entire chiller is stopped by a diagnostic that may automaticallyclear.

The chiller is inhibited from starting by Low Condenser Temperature-Inhibit is active below either -3.9°C (can be disabled with properfreeze protection) or -18°C (limit set by design, cannot be disabled). As an exception, this will not stop a chiller already running.

The chiller is inhibited from starting (and running) by an outdoor airambient temperature lower than a specified temperature - per useradjustable settings and can be disabled.

The chiller is inhibited from starting (and running) by the "externalstop" hardwired input.

The chiller is inhibited from starting (and running) by command froma Building Automation System via the digital communication link(com 3 or com 5).

This is a transient mode - 15-min. max, and is only possible if thechiller is in the Auto - Remote command mode. After a power upreset, it is necessary to wait for valid communication from a BAS(Tracer) to know whether to run or stay inhibited. Either validcommunication will be received from the BAS (Tracer), or acommunication diagnostic ultimately will result. In the latter case thechiller will revert to Local control.

The chiller is inhibited from running for a brief period of time if it iscommanded from active ice building mode into normal cooling modevia the ice building hardwired input or Tracer. This allows time for theexternal system load to "switchover" from an ice bank to the chilledwater loop, and provides for a controlled pull down of the loop'swarmer temperature. This mode is not seen if the ice making isautomatically terminated on return brine temperature per the modebelow.

The chiller is inhibited from running as the Ice Building process hasbeen normally terminated on the return brine temperature. The chillerwill not start unless the ice building command (hardwired input orBAS command) is removed or cycled.

The chiller is not currently running but can be expected to start at anymoment given that the proper conditions and interlocks are satisfied.Further information is provided by the sub-mode:

The chiller will wait up to 4 minutes in this mode for evaporator waterflow to be established per the flow switch hardwired input.

The chiller will wait indefinitely in this mode, for an evaporatorleaving water temperature higher than the Chilled Water Setpoint plusthe Differential to Start.

The chiller is going through the necessary steps to allow the leadcircuit and lead compressor to start.

At least one circuit and one compressor on the chiller are currentlyrunning. Further information is provided by the sub-mode:

The chiller is running in the Ice Building Mode, and either at ormoving towards full capacity available. Ice mode is terminated eitherwith the removal of the ice mode command or with the return brinetemperature falling below the Ice Termination Setpoint.

At least one circuit and one compressor on the chiller are currentlyrunning, but the operation of the chiller as a whole is being activelylimited by the controls.

This mode will occur if both the OA temperature is above -4.4°C andthe Evaporator Leaving Water Temperature is above 23.9°C as is oftenthe case in a high temperature pull-down. While in this mode, nocompressors will be allowed to load past their minimum loadcapacity step, but it will not inhibit compressor staging. This mode isnecessary to prevent nuisance trips due to Compressor Overcurrentor High Pressure Cutout. Reasonable pull-down rates can still beexpected despite this limit.

Hex Code: 3-digit code used touniquely identify diagnostics.

Diagnostic Name: Name of thediagnostic as it appears at DynaViewand/or TechView displays.

Severity: Defines the action of theabove effect. Immediate means aninstantaneous shutdown of theaffected portion. Normal meansroutine or friendly shutdown of theaffected portion. Special Modemeans a particular mode ofoperation is invoked, but withoutshutdown, and Info means anInformational Note or Warning isgenerated.

Persistence: Defines whether or notthe diagnostic and its effects are tobe manually reset (Latched), or canbe either manually or automaticallyreset (Nonlatched).

Criteria: Quantitatively defines thecriteria used in generating thediagnostic and, if nonlatching, thecriteria for auto reset.

Reset Level: Defines the lowest levelof manual diagnostic resetcommand which can clear thediagnostic. The manual diagnosticreset levels in decreasing order ofpriority are: Local, Remote and Info. For example, a diagnostic that has areset level of Remote, can be resetby either a remote diagnostic resetcommand or by a local diagnosticreset command, but not by thelower priority Info Reset command.
