Part OnePart One
Packing is of great importance in foreign trade. When talking about packing,
details such as manner of packing, kinds of packing materials, marking on the
packing, the burden of packing cost, etc. should be involved.
There are two types of packing, the packing for sale or inner packing and the
transportation packing or outer packing. The former is one part of a product as it is
nearly impossible for a commodity without packaging to be distributed into the
sales outlets such as supermarkets and convenience stores in today’s highly
specialized and globalized market economy. It serves as an essential promotional
tool for the sale of products by attracting the attention of potential buyers.
The packing in the context of international trade and this unit refers mainly to
the latter type, the transportation packing, which provides protection for goods
transported for long distance, mostly by sea. It provides easy marks for operation
staff at the docks to distinguish the goods they handle and for consignees to
identify their goods when receiving them at the destination ports.
1. The Significance of Packing
Part OnePart One
A packing clause is an integral part of a sales contract or a letter of credit.
Generally, the following contents are required in the packing clause:
(1) who is to bear the packing cost: the seller or the buyer;
(2) the method of packing: cases, bales, barrels, baskets or containers etc.;
(3) the packing specification: the quantity in each unit, the dimension of the
package, etc.;
(4) the marking on the outer packing.
2. The Indispensable Contents Required in a Packing Clause
Part OnePart One
3. The Role of a Packing List
Responding to the requirements of some buyers, the exporter needs to issue
a packing list to confirm the detailed information of the shipment of cargo
exported. From the packing list, the buyer and the carrier can determine in how
many packages the whole lot is packed and the particular items in each package.
We can also regard a packing list as a more specific version of a commercial
invoice without price information.
When required by some nations and buyers, the packing list is attached to
the outside of each container of the lot of goods in a waterproof envelope marked
“Packing List” or “Packing List Enclosed” for check by authorities of both the
exporter and importer countries. A packing list is often one of the required
documents that the exporter should submit to the bank for negotiation under the
payment method of L/C.

We have different experiences in terms of getting indemnification1 from the insurance company. According to you, the carton packing aids in pilferage revelation2 and thus helps to get compensation from insurance companies. However, we were confronted with a difficult dispute when we were in a claim two years ago when we were informed that the cartons were not seaworthy.
In this case, we would like to settle the packing issue in this way: --- when you export under CIF term, carton packing is allowed, but under FOB term, wooden cases are still used.
We are awaiting your further comments.
