Education Awards' Houston Prinicpal Cheryl Brajenovich was overjoyed when she was chosen as a 2004 H-E-B Excellence in Education Award Winner at the gala awards ceremony June 11 in Austin. Brajenovich received a $10,000 check for herself as well as a $25,000 grant for Ridgecrest Elementary School. She was one of nine winners selected from among 45 statewide finalists. "If you have a great teacher, you have a great class. If you have a great principal, you have a great school. It seems simple, but it's one of the most challenging issues faced by our public schools: how to recruit and retain the best professionals in the business," Kate Rogers, director of public affairs for H-E-B, said. "Brajenovich is clearly one of the best and we are proud to honor her for her many accomplishments." Brajenovich, who began her career in education in 1976 as a kindergarten assistant, joined Ridgecrest Elementary in 1989. The largest at-risk elementary school in Spring Branch, Ridgecrest educates almost 900 kindergarten through fifth grade students. Under Brajenovich's leadership, Ridgecrest was one of 72 schools nation- wide nominated for The School National Change Award and was the only Texas school in the semi-finals out of 28 schools. Additionally, in fall 2003, Ridgecrest was selected with three other elementary schools to pilot a gifted and talented project for under-represented populations. A leader not only on her campus, but in the Spring Branch district, Brajenovich has served on a number of district committees, including: Bilin- gual/ESL, Leadership Institutes, Steering Committee for Job Reclassification, Elementary Alternative Education Plan Program, WEB Pilot Group, and Op- tional Extended Year, among others. In a letter of recommendation for Brajenovich, Linda A. Reed, Spring Branch ISD's assistant superintendent for school improvement and support, noted that Ridgecrest is an exemplary model for the process of school improvement. She wrote, "Ridgecrest, under Mrs. Brajenovich's strong leadership, has become a model for how to create a positive learning climate, disaggregate data and fo- cus on student achievement, create models for teacher support, and develop strong parent programs." Brajenovich, along with the other finalists, received an all-expense-paid three- day trip to Austin. Finalists stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel, participated in interviews with a statewide selection committee, took part in an educational forum and enjoyed a special reception in their honor at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Finally, at the gala awards ceremony, Brajenovich and more than 400 edu- cators and community and business leaders from across the state gathered for an evening that included a surprise musical performance by Texas artists Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison and a special tribute video. Each of the nine overall winners was presented with a check for themselves and a school grant ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 based on their years of experience in the classroom. About the HEB Excellence in Education Awards In 2004, H-E-B presented more than $420,000 in cash and grants, making the Excellence in Education Awards the largest monetary awards program for educators in the state. Now in its third year, the response to the program from teachers, adminis- trators and the community has been tremendous. In order to find the best teach- ers and principals in Texas, H-E-B began by asking customers, Partners (em- ployees) and community members to submit the names of their favorite educa- tors. This year, H-E-B received more than 4,000 nominations. H-E-B sent each nominee an application packet asking them to share their professional experi- ence, educational philosophy and achievements both in and out of the class- room. The applications were read by a team of judges from the College of Educa- tion at Trinity University in San Antonio who faced the difficult task of narrow- ing the field to 225 semi-finalists. These 150 teachers and 75 principals went on to compete in the regional judging process in April. Five regional judging panels comprised of former winners, administrators, and university and community leaders selected the 45 overall Jjnalists. The finalists were notified at their schools with a surprise visit by the H-E- B prize patrol during the week of May 3, National Teacher Appreciation Week. The teachers were each awarded a $1,000 check for themselves plus a $1,000 grant for their schools. The principals were awarded a $1,000 check for them- selves plus a $2,500 grant for their schools. Each finalist was also invited to come to Austin to participate in the state- wide competition and awards celebration activities. They began with a per- sonal interview with the statewide judging panel followed by a special recep- tion in their honor at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum on Thurs- day evening. The week culminated with the gala awards ceremony on the evening of Friday, June 11. Kate Rogers, H-E-B Centennial Celebration Project Director, and Charles Butt, Chairman and CEO of H-E-B joined Cheri Brajenovich, center, for the recent award presentation.
