He was known as the “bishop of the barrio” for his ministry to farmworkers for the poor and marginalized, also known as the lowrider” bishop because of his support for members of local modified-car clubs. He was con- cerned about the poor, un-catechized young people, migrants and people who lacked support. He spent his summer vacations living with farm- workers in the Central Valley. Bishop J.
