Message from the PresidentDear Members I would like to share with you some of our milestones and achievements, since the launch of our Educational Series in February 2010. NYCPA provides monthly CLE seminars that cover different topics of law for its members and the community. Its members participated in five webinars, attended 6 CLE seminars for a total of 6.0 credits (including 1.0 credit in Ethics) on topics ranging from Employment Discrimination Law, Trial Technology, Basics in UCC Fillings to Federal e-filing.
On March 27th, members and non-members participated in a three-hour Empowerment Seminar for Legal Professionals with a networking event that followed. The attendees received CLE credit for presentations on how to develop your personal and professional brand and engaged in a panel discussion at length on how to achieve one’s full potential and how to demonstrate specific work skills in this changing and highly competitive economic environment.
Our May 13th event, the Career Workshop titled CORE: Career Opportunities, Resources and Education brought many attendees and was a huge success. This 4-hours seminar included three topics. The first speaker, Shana Pederson @ PeterSan (www.petersan.com) provided tips on effective “Cover Letter and Resume Writing”. Her excellent communication skills attracted the attention of all in attendance. Shana’s PowerPoint presentation was followed by a brief Q&A session. The next topic during the Career Workshop; “Interviewing Techniques” was covered by two representatives from another NYCPA sponsor, Special Counsel (www.specialcounsel.com). Hillary Ahearn and Carine Hodges both gave an excellent presentation on what to expect and how to respond to challenging questions during the interview process. They also provided strategies on how to bring the unique skills and experience to the attention of an interviewer and proper questions to ask.
During a session break all event’s attendees were treated to delicious food catered by GiGi’s Café and sponsored by the NYCPA and had an opportunity to network among peers and participants.
The last session of the CORE event was dedicated to an interactive panel discussion titled “How to Standout in a Tough Economy – Next Steps”. The panelists were Hillary Ahearn and Carine Hodges at Special Counsel, Maureen Peters, Professional Career Coach (www.envision-coaching.com) and Cynthia Thorne, NYCPA’s Professional Development, Speaker and State Outreach Coordinator. Channet Jusino, NYCPA’s Secretary, served as the moderator for the panel discussion and successfully set a positive tone for a lively and healthy discussion that generated many interesting questions and great answers from our panelists. Shaun Pilcher, NYCPA’s Immediate Past President and NFPA Representative also stood out among our panelists and shared his personal experiences with our guests regarding resume writing, salary negotiations and interview techniques. One of the topics discussed at length were networking strategies and the difference between social and professional networking. Many examples were followed by healthy laughter. Our evening was concluded by selecting winners for door prizes donated by Maureen Peters (a gift certificate for 3 1-hour professional career coaching sessions (priceless)), Shaun Pilcher (Starbucks gift card $30 value) and Cynthia Thorne (Macy’s gift card $25.00 value.)
The best outcome from the CORE event was the fact that attendees asked
