Another marvellous photograph for this month’s cover. Please do keep them coming in. This photograph features snakes-head fritillaries or fraucups as they are known locally. We could do a separate feature on local names for different flowers and animals. Apparently fraucups are also sometimes called frogcups or even Fordcups. They were first recorded in Ford in 1736 and there is a story that they escaped from the garden at Waldridge Manor. They floated down the river and ended up in the fields and possibly on as far as meadows in Oxford. There is a link here between verse on the cover which mentions the “lilies of the field” and these local wild flowers which are also lilies. It is interesting how photographs of everyday local scenes can illustrate aspects of our faith. The bible world is made up of stories of local, mainly rural scenes.

Letter from Aston Sandford If you don’t already know it I can recommend a book called Hidden Buckinghamshire by Jean Archer, published in 1989 by Countryside Books. Aston Sandford of course features (as does Dinton): there is a very nice sketch of the church, and the book tells us a little more about the Rev Thomas Scott and his household. The book draws attention to Gilbert Scott’s description of his grandfather which I have now located in Gilbert’s (rather rambling) Personal and Professional Recollections published in 1879, the year after his death. Gilbert Scott was born in 1811 (so would have been 10 when Thomas Scott died in 1821) and was brought up in Gawcott. He recalls that a family visit would be paid to his grandfather annually, by means of a specially hired post chaise. He remembers Thomas Scott as - ‘...a thin tottering old man; very grave and dignified. Being perfectly bald he wore a black velvet cap, excepting when he assumed a venerable wig. He wore knee breeches with silver buckles, black silk stockings and a shovel hat.’ In the engraving of Scott in the church he is wearing that venerable wig. Gilbert tells us that the barber who made the wig was a pious man, who himself ‘put two sons into the Church’, and who walked over from Princes Risborough every Sunday to hear Scott preach, while ‘a place was always kept for him at the dinner table’. We are told too that Scott’s main amusement was gardening, though most of his time was actually spent in his study. By the time his grandson knew him he was deaf, which made conversation at meals difficult, and that ‘when any joke had excited laughter at the table, [Thomas Scott] would beg to be informed as to what it was, and when he had been made to understand it , he would only deign to issue a single word - Pshaw’. Of life in Aston Sandford Rectory Gilbert Scott recalls that family prayers ‘were formidable to a child. They lasted a full hour, several persons from the village attending them’. All in all I get the impression that Gilbert Scott was a little in awe of his grandfather – he describes his grandfather walking to church in his gown and cassock, long curled wig and shovel hat and says he had ‘a most vulnerable look, and I felt a sort of dread at it’. Gilbert Scott goes on to talk of the Rectory servants at the time – ‘The whole of my grandfather’s household seemed imbued with religious sentiment. Old Betty, the cook; Lizzie, the waiting maid; and old Betty Moulder, an infirm inmate, taken in on account of her excellence and helplessness, were all

patterns of goodness and even poor John Brangwin, the serving man, partook of the general effect of the atmosphere at the rectory. Perhaps surprisingly, Gilbert Scott records that he had kept in touch with John Brangwin, whose position in the Rectory is not recorded, and that he had recently visited him at the almshouses in Chenies. It was a Sunday and the old fellow was reading the copy of Scott’s Commentary which Thomas Scott had left him in his will. He told Gilbert he had just had a cold dinner, the reason being that Thomas Scott had never had anything cooked on the Sabbath day, and he had followed that precept. These recollections are precious because we have so very few records of life in Aston Sandford before the 20th Century, and memories of laughter at the Rectory dining table and details of named inhabitants bring the past to life. Gilbert Scott says he regretted that his recollections of his grandfather ‘were so very scanty’ (elsewhere he says he had a ‘tolerably distinct’ recollection of him), while his ‘ memory of the place, and of its less important inhabitants, and of its trifling incidents, is as perfect as if it were of last year.’ In describing Aston Sandford in her book Jean Archer says – This idyllic spot can hardly have changed at all since Scott’s day, and one only has to stand in the churchyard to know some of the peace that he fully appreciated here.

Long may it remain. Marilynne A Morgan

Treasurer Aston Sandford

Parish News 11 May 2019

The Ascension The ascension of The Lord Jesus Christ is described in the Acts of the Apostles which occurred at Bethany on the Mount of Olives The ascension has been described as the Cinderella of the Christian faith. The question is “Did the ascension really happen?".

The Acts of the Apostles was written by Luke, this modest, self-effacing doctor, who carefully investigated and researched until he got at the facts of Christianity's world changing message. His writings were based on the evidence of eye witnesses.

Many people nowadays, deny the historicity of the ascension. Belief in a literal ascension would have been understandable in Luke's day, they say, when people imagined heaven to be 'up there'. This was a pre-scientific age. Luke tells the story of the ascension with simplicity. There is no embroidery such as we find in legends. It reads like history. Luke emphasizes the presence of eyewitnesses and repeated refers to what they SAW with their own EYES. He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as He was going. The two angels then said to them, "Why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven".

Five times in this extremely brief account it is stressed that the ascension took place visibly. And here he includes the ascension of Jesus within the range of historical truths to which the eyewitnesses could and did testify. There is no alternative explanation in the Bible of the cessation of the resurrection appearances and of the final disappearance of Jesus from the earth. What does all this mean for us today? We need to pay attention to those two men dressed in white who stood beside them (the apostles) and spoke to them. Luke calls them men because that is how they appeared, but their shinning dress and authoritative tone indicates that they were angels. "Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking into the sky?" We are not to be sky scanners. “This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.

They will not bring him back by glazing into the sky. He has gone and will return in his own good time". This same Jesus indicates that his coming will be personal and visible but there will be an important difference between His going and His coming. Although his coming will be personal, it will not be private like his ascension. Only the eleven apostles saw him go, when He comes "every eye will see Him". And in place of a localised coming, it will be like the lighting, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. Today we need to hear the implied message of the angels: "You have seen Him go. You will see Him return."

HELL UPON WATER with Paul Chamberlain Tuesday May 21 2019 at 7.30 pm at Stone Village Hall

Paul has spoken to us before about French prisoners at Norman Cross during the Napoleonic wars, and the fascinating artefacts they created. This is a different story, about other prisoners of that war, both French and f other nationalities. Over 200,000 prisoners were brought to Britain

and many of them were to be held on the

infamous “hulks”, unseaworthy old ships

moored on the English coast where some

prisoners languished for years. An expert in his

What are some common types of phone scams?

It can be hard to tell the difference between a scam and cold calling. However, it is good to know some of the typical tricks that scammers use so you can be prepared.

Bank scams Someone may call claiming to be from your bank telling you there’s a problem with your card or account. The caller will often sound professional and try to convince you that your card has been cloned or that your money is at risk. They may ask for your account and card details, including your PIN number, and even offer to send a courier to collect your card. They may also advise transferring your money to a ‘safe account’ to protect it.

Computer repair scams A scammer may call you claiming to be from the helpdesk of a well-known IT firm, such as Microsoft. They will tell you that your computer has a virus and will ask you to download ‘anti-virus software’, possibly at a cost.

Compensation calls This is a call from a company asking about a car accident you’ve supposedly had claiming you may be entitled to compensation. Some of these could be genuine companies looking for business but others are scammers.

HMRC scams You may get a call from someone claiming to be from HMRC saying there is an issue with your tax refund or an unpaid tax bill. They may leave a message and ask you to call back. Again, do not be fooled by this. HMRC would never contact you this way and would never ask you to reveal personal financial information such as your bank account details.

Pensions and investment scams This is a call about an 'unmissable' investment opportunity, or offering you the opportunity to access your pension cash earlier. Nuisance calls about pensions are now illegal. If you receive a cold call about your pension, report it to the Information Commissioner's Office on 0303 123 1113

Parish of Stone, Dinton & Hartwell

Vacancy : Parochial Church Council Secretary

After some years in the role of Parochial Church Council Secretary Mrs Sue Birrell has decided to stand down from the role. The PCC will need to appoint a replacement at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting in April. Could this be YOU?

Not wishing to put anyone off, but at the same time being open with what is required, below is listed what the Secretary does on behalf of the Parochial Church Council. If you are on the Electoral Roll or are prepared to go on the roll, and you have the time and skills then YES this could be you.

Meetings 1. Check venue, time etc. and prepare an Agenda at least 10 days prior to meeting, send out to members. 2. Send out reports from the committees and any other information needed for the meeting. 3. Take minutes of what is discussed making sure you know who said what! 4. Distribute minutes prior to the next meeting. 5. Keep copies both hard and electronic as a record of events.

Annual Parochial Church Meeting 1. Arrange date, time, venue and advertise this at each church for the correct time as set out by Canon Law and advised to secretaries in the Diocesan mailing 2. Produce the Annual Report and a booklet containing reports and accounts to present at the meeting 3. Take minutes of what is discussed making sure you know who said what! 4. Keep copies both hard and electronic as a record of events 5. After the meeting complete forms for the Diocese on new Parochial Church Council Officers, Electoral Roll numbers and send Annual Report to them STATISTICS 1. Collect the information needed in order to complete the Parish Returns online by the end of January. Keeping things up to date during the year makes this easier e.g. newcomers, leavers. April Gardening Now as the month progresses we can begin to plant out or sow all manner of tender plants. Runner beans which always seem to garner the most attention can be sown directly into the soil from about the tenth, or sown in pots and planted out towards the month’s end. The same method can be used on marrows, pumpkins, courgettes and sweetcorn. It probably pays these days to grow the seeds in pots and transplant. Packets of seeds do not seem to contain the same quantities as they used to, so one needs to use them carefully.

Beetroot and main crop carrots can be sown, both of which can be left in the ground and used as required even into the winter. Brussels sprouts, summer and red cabbage and cauliflower plants can all be planted out, but make sure they are well watered to get them off to a good start.

Dahlias, chrysanths and all the Summer flowers can be put out, and they will need care and attention. Make sure bedding plants are hardened off before planting.

Plants which are growing in containers filled with soil less compost need feeding as the compost has only enough nutrients to last a short while.

Hopefully the weather is suitable for gardens not too hot or too cold and enough moisture to keep plants healthy, and of course the weeds grow whatever the weather so do keep pulling them up or mowing them down.
