Sixteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time
Grace and sin, belief and unbelief, good and evil all exist together.
While we wrestle with these two dimensions of reality inwardly, they
are also witnessed in the actions and words of others. Many, all too
often, beat themselves up because of their sin. We are also all too
quick to pass judgment on others whom we perceive to be in error and
walking down a wrong path. God does not make rash judgments, nor
should we. Patience is the order of the day as is an understanding that
God is ultimately the caller of the shots.
Our faith tells us that while God allows the wheat and the weeds to
coexist, the wheat will always triumph. As long as we can cultivate
even a little faith and a small measure of desire for God, He can
produce abundant blessings and good things. Even when the weeds
seem to have triumphed, there still may be a small measure of faith
remaining that can be cultivated and grown. It doesn’t take much!
Unless a person totally allows the weeds to reign, there is always to be
found at least a small measure of faith, good, light, and love. With
even this small portion, God can produce abundant growth.
Admittedly, it is easy to give into the weeds, and they grow very
quickly. Any gardener knows this to be true. Sometimes, the weeds
even seem more attractive and vibrant. Dealing with weeds can
quickly become a losing battle, and they can look healthier and grow
faster than the very plants we are trying to protect. It’s easy to give
into them and let them win. While God will deal with all things in due
time, we are responsible for keeping things in check in the short term.
It is our task to keep our eyes fixed on God’s presence and mercy. We
are asked to avoid judgment. And, it is not our responsibility to deal
with the weeds in someone else’s garden, only our own. One garden is
enough responsibility for anyone.
Weeds have power. We have to realize this. While they can appear
attractive and healthy, they can quickly choke us off from God’s
presence. Our task is one of maintenance and cultivating a desire for
God. Even the smallest kernel of faith can grow into something
wonderful. In God’s time, the eternal harvest will come, and we will
no longer have to worry about the weeds.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS
Do What Needs to Be Done A friend recently confided in me that although he prayed frequently each day and was involved heavily in his parish, he did not sense much fruit coming from it all and was left feeling unsatisfied. I assured him he was not alone. I told him of a deceased pastor of mine who had spoken frequently about being in this type of situation. Even as a priest, he knew all too well of how we can feel like we are simply going through the motions. It is precisely at those times that continuing to pray and practicing good stewardship is most important, because it would be easier to simply take a break and risk never coming back. He liked to say, “Do the drill,” meaning just do what needs to be done.
We are all called to be mature disciples who answer the call of Jesus Christ regardless of the cost. We cannot choose when and where the call will come. We cannot schedule our stewardship in a way that is always most convenient for us. Even when the fruits of our faithful efforts seem hidden from us, we hold to the promise that we are never called to give of ourselves for nothing. God is working through us and in us. No matter how dry the land may seem, seeds are being planted to yield a harvest greater than we can ever realize. Stay strong and do the drill!

All families are warmly welcomed to join A Family of Faith this coming fall! The goals of this program are to encourage and equip you
to live and teach your children the Catholic Faith at home. With one adult meeting and one family meeting each month, this program will give you all
the knowledge and tools you need to bring your children up in the Faith. For more information, contact Stella at 554.7086.
Ordination to the Priesthood - Rescheduled: The ordination to the priesthood of Reverend Mr. (Deacon) Alexander R. Boucher has
been rescheduled to Saturday, August 22, 2020, at St. Joseph Church of Good Shepherd Parish in Biddeford. Because of the impact COVID-19 is
having on public gatherings, additional details about the ordination are still to be determined.
Maine Catholic Youth Convention to Be Live-Streamed on July 26
The Maine Catholic Youth Convention, traditionally a weekend gathering of Maine teens from Aroostook County to York County, will move online for
2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it still promises to be a great event celebrating the faith and gifts that young people bring to the life of the
Church! That free gathering will now be presented virtually on Sunday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to noon. High school youth (those entering ninth
grade through recent high school graduates), youth ministers, and families are encouraged to attend. The virtual convention will feature a live-
streamed Mass celebrated by Bishop Robert Deeley, music, presentations, prayer, and much more. Attendees can participate live on July 26 or
receive a link to a recorded version. Though the event is free, a donation to the Catholic Appeal (www.portlanddiocese.org/Appeal) is suggested for
families looking to support the event and the Office of Lifelong Faith Formation, both made possible by the Appeal. Registration is simple.
Participants need only to email Shawn Gregory at [email protected]. He will send the appropriate link (live or recorded) to the
participants. For more information, visit www.portlanddiocese.org/content/2020-virtual-youth-convention.
Sign of the Cross
Question:
Why do Catholics make the sign of the cross?
Answer:
The sign of the cross is a devotional practice that dates back to the first Apostles. When making the sign of the cross, we remember Jesus Christ who
died for us and also bear witness to the fact that we belong to him and are called to share the Good News to all the world. At our Baptism, we were
signed with a cross and marked for Christ. That mark remains on us throughout the entirety of our lives. We remind ourselves of that mark every time we
make the same gesture over our bodies. We also remind ourselves that to be a Christian means we are to “put on Christ” and be Christ for a world that
needs to know him. In a way, this devotional gesture covers us with Christ so that others may see him in us.
Catholics are not the only ones who make the sign of the cross. Orthodox, Lutheran, and Anglicans are examples of other Christians who maintain this
same ancient tradition.

Parish Projects
We have special projects that need to be completed and ask for help from
our Parish Family. Separate accounts have been set up for donations to
be used for these purposes.
St Mary: Funds are being raised to cover the costs of demolition of the
old Albert House. This is phase 2 of the project. Phase 3 will be
paving for additional parking. Also need help installing flooring in
two small bathrooms.
St Louis: Funds are being raised to replace the stained glass window and
repair the sills, as well as replacing the basement windows.
This project is nearing completion. Plan is to repair front steps
after the windows are done.
Holy Rosary: Help is needed to demolish and replace the handicap
ramp. A committee will be formed to look at all options and
to seek grants for this project. The church ceiling needs to
be repaired and painted.
Thank you to John Carrier and Reno Corriveau for your work at St
Mary Chapman St. cemetery! A new fence will be installed soon as well.
Also many thanks to Steve and Diane Brooker and team at St Louis
for the extra maintenance work at St Louis, especially the windows. The
church is looking very good!
We couldn’t do this without your generosity, it is much appreciated!!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!
