MASS INTENTIONS LENT Once again, the Passion of the Lord draws near! In our preparation for Easter, God in His prov-idence offers us each year the season of Lent as a “sacramental sign of our conversion”. Lent

summons us, and enables us, to come back to the Lord wholeheartedly and in every aspect of our life. Pope Francis' Message for Lent, 2018. What is Ash Wednesday? It marks the beginning of the liturgical sea-son of Lent. Palms from the previous Palm Sunday are burned – ashes from these palms are distributed on Ash Wednesday as a sign of penitence. Why do Catholic’s traditionally give something up during Lent? To do penance in preparation for the greatest feast in the Christian calendar. What is fasting and abstinence? Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are univer-sal days of fasting and abstinence. Catholics still consider Fridays throughout Lent as days of abstinence. Anyone over the age of 18 and under the age of 59 are obliged to fast and abstain. Fasting, in the Latin Church, is the limitation of food and drink to one main meal and two smaller meals, with no solid foods in between. Abstaining, in this context, is the refraining from certain kinds of food or drink, typically meat. In lieu of fasting, one may substitute with works of charity. Archdi-ocese of Toronto Lent preparation message. Anointing of the Sick. This week we continue with the teaching of this Sacrament. This Sacrament, same as the other six has its’ root in the Bible. When Christ sent His disciples out to preach, "they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them" (Mark 6:13). James 5:14-15 ”Ties physical healing to the forgiveness of sins: Is any man sick among you? Let him bring in the priests of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick man: and the Lord shall raise him up: and if he be in sins, they shall be forgiven him”. Who May Receive the Sacrament? Follow-ing this biblical understanding, the Cate-chism of the Catholic Church (1514) notes that: The Anointing of the Sick "is not a sac-rament only for those who are at the point of

death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faith-ful begins to be in danger of death from sick-ness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived." Fr. Josue Vargas Lara

ShareLife Living the Gospel by support-ing ShareLife agencies. “As we begin our ShareLife cam-paign, we are encouraged to “Live the Gospel” in all that we do. How do we demonstrate that in our community? Living the Gospel may mean helping single mothers to care for their newborn children, or being available to families facing difficulties, or welcoming refugee families to our community. For more than 41 years, countless individuals have ex-perienced this compassionate care offered by our agencies. Please support our annual arch-diocesan appeal during this Lenten season!” Thomas Cardinal Collins, Archbishop of To-ronto. March 18 is ShareLife Sunday. Please give generously.

Mass Intentions We ask the community to kindly request your mass intentions ahead of time. Mass intentions to be announced on weekend masses and days of the following week must be requested by Wednesday of each week. We cannot change dates for mass intentions previously requested. Thank you for your understanding and your co-operation.

Planning to be a Catholic School Teacher?

It is critical for you to know that to be hired to teach in any Catholic School Board in Ontario as part of your appli-cation for employment you must pro-vide a letter of recommendation from your Pastor. It is highly recommended to contact the pastor a year in advance, especially in light of the fact that all universities make this matter known to every student at the beginning of the year. Please plan to have a conversation with your pastor early in the process (not the week before you are submitting your application) and you will avoid disappointment and stress at the time when applications are to be submitted. The following are required at St. Jude’s: Be (yourself, not your parents or

grandparents) a registered member of the parish using offertory envelopes (at least 1 year before the application).

Be in the parish for participation in Sunday/Saturday mass for a minimum of 12 months prior to approaching the pastor.

Make your request 3 months in ad-vance. Applicant must be the one making the requests.

No request by a relative or a parent will be accepted .

The pastor has to be able to recommend you, and that is only possible if he knows you at the basic level of regular mass attendance. Personal knowledge of the candidate’s faith practice is what the pastor needs to recommend, not your relatives, but yourself, as this is a personal recommendation not a family one.
