Lessons from the Cross

We no longer fear death

We learn how to suffer, we learn how to die

It changes our world-view

The Resurrection Luke 24 : 1 - 12 God really and truly

raised Jesus from the dead.

Essential to all Christians as the indispensable fact upon which the whole of Christian faith is based. Romans 10:9“If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

How do we know?

The Empty Tomb The Post-

Resurrection appearances (Lk. 24, Jn. 20, 21, Mt. 28, Mk. 16.)

Eye-witnesses known by name who claimed that Jesus had risen.

Page 14: Passion, death and resurrection 2014 - Marge Martinez SFX PJ RCIA

How do we know? His own disciples

deserted him, then did a remarkable turn around filled with conviction about his resurrection which they proclaimed.

These were not demented incompetents but remarkable men most of whom would eventually lay down their lives for the truth of the resurrection experience.

Early teaching about the Resurrection

Acts 2:23 – 24 (c. 61 AD)This man, handed over to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law. But God raised him up, having freed him from death.

Early teaching about the Resurrection

1 Cor 15: 3 – 8 (c. 53 – 57 AD)For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all as one untimely born he appeared to me.

THE ASCENSIO

NLuke 24: 50 – 53

Matthew 28: 16 – 20

Acts 1: 1 - 11

Page 20: Passion, death and resurrection 2014 - Marge Martinez SFX PJ RCIA

After 40 days – the Ascension (Luke 24: 50 – 53); Acts 1: 1 - 11After 50 days – Pentecost ( Acts 2: 1 – 4)

However the Cross – Resurrection – Ascension – Pentecost form one single event from a theological perspective.

It is the final and definitive act of God that embraces and fulfills the whole of human history.

The Risen Jesus lives as God in a transformed and exalted existence with the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Through these mysteries Jesus has empowered us to respond and to take responsibility until He comes again.

We are called to create with Him the full and final realization of God’s Kingdom

The Culmination of the Life of Jesus

Dying and Rising

A disciple is one who is plunged into the Paschal

Mystery.

For a disciple of Jesus, dying and rising is our way of living.

In our relationships, in our communities, in our everyday

life, families and jobs

Jesus continues HIS dying and rising in His Church, in our

dying and rising.

Dying and Rising

Luke 9:23 Then he said to them all, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves, take up their cross daily and follow me.”

Jesus touches our pains, our wounds, our sorrows with hope, peace, joy, life.

"Why follow a man who promises us a Cross, an instrument of torture? Because he is true God, who loves us and so, always desires what is best for us. Because he is true Man, who shows us how to love, and so become more fully human. Because the Cross - those trials, sufferings, hardships, evils we endure - has been given meaning by Christ, who rose from this wooden instrument of torture to eternal resurrected Life. And without faith and hope in this, and without Love, this life would indeed be death". - From a set of Rosary meditations given to Fr Lawrence Freeman OP

MARANATHA! Conclusion:

Thus concludes the teaching of the life of Christ.

From the Liturgy (Preface of Ordinary Sundays)

“By His birth we are rebornIn His suffering we are freed

from sin,By His rising from the dead

we rise to everlasting life,In His return to You in glory

we enter into Your heavenly kingdom.”

Rev 22 : 20 – 21 “Come Lord Jesus!” “Maranatha!”
