• Reaffirm doctrine- Not justification through faith alone but an ability to cooperate with grace and grow in justification.- purgatory and indulgences- transubstantiation - the importance of the priesthood - not Scripture alone but Scripture and the tradition and teachings of the Church.
• Campaign to affirm and spread the teachings of the Catholic faith.
• Stamp out heresy • Images do belong in a
Church. • Gave little ground doctrinally
but agreed that abuses needed to be rectified, the kind of corruption that, in part, led to the Reformation.

Church Documents
• Encyclicals A letter from the pope to the bishops of the Roman Catholic Church, in which he lays down policy on the general welfare of the Church, religious, moral, or political issues.
• It is generally more important than an Apostolic Exhortation and usually deals with a specific doctrine, where the doctrine is clarified, or explained in greater detail.

• Apostolic Exhortations Apostolic Exhortation is a type of communication from the Pope that is written to Bishops, Clergy and faithful to encourage them to undertake an implementation of particular set of recommendations in the document.

“The Church like a pilgrim in a foreign land presses forward amid the persecution of the world and the consolations of God, announcing the Cross and Death of the Lord until He comes. By the power of the Risen Lord, the Church is given strength to overcome patiently and lovingly the afflictions and hardships that assail it from within and without to show forth in the world the mystery of the Lord in a faithful though shadowed way, until at last it will be revealed in total splendour.”
