    Seventh Sunday in Ordinary

Gospel ReadingMark 2:1-12Jesus tells the paralyzed man that his sins are forgiven and also heals his body.

Background on the Gospel ReadingIn today's Gospel we continue to hear Mark's reports about Jesus' preaching and healing. Jesus has retuto Capernaum, which Mark refers to as his home. Jesus' popularity with the people thrives, and he preato them. The crowds are so great that the house is filled, and no one can enter through the door. Determto bring their paralyzed friend to Jesus, four men break through the roof and lower the man into the house

Jesus was moved by the faith displayed by the four determined men, and so he addressed the paralyzed mdeclaring that his sins are forgiven. This response may strike us as odd, but in Jesus' time, illness was thoto be a sign of sinfulness. Reading this passage in the context of the overall narrative of Mark's Gospel, Jappears to be upping the ante in the mounting tension with the Jewish authorities. Forgiveness of sins w

power that Jews believed to be from God alone. To claim the authority to forgive sins was blasphemous. tension will continue to grow throughout Mark's Gospel. In the end, blasphemy will be among the acctions made against Jesus, leading to his death on the cross.

Mark reports that some of the scribes were present and heard Jesus' words to the paralyzed man. Mthen describes the reaction of the scribes, who are now beginning to question Jesus' words. They are alarmJesus knew what the scribes were thinking and responded to their accusations of blasphemy by curingman's paralysis, offering that as a sign of his authority to forgive sins. All who witnessed this healing are to have been astonished.

This passage highlights for us the connection between faith and Jesus' healing power. Jesus is said to been moved by the faith of the paralyzed man's friends. Our prayers for those who are sick bring to themhealing presence of Jesus.

    Movie Review

Love and ForgivenessExploring the Connections Between Loving and Forgiving

he entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

    Galatians 5:14, NIV)

t the very heart of Christianity and Jesus' ministry was a simple pre-ept -- that love for ourselves and each other is all we need to fullyalize ourselves as children of God. Time and again, the Bible rein-

orces this simple fact, and yet even the best of us feel challenged when

ying to follow this one basic rule. How are we to love our neighbor ase love ourselves?

hrough compassion, forgiveness, assuming responsibility, and takingeps toward leadership, perhaps we've begun to love ourselves in aeeper, more complete way. God's love is all encompassing; it is un-nding and perfect to our shortcomings. By accepting ourselves as wee, with strengths and weaknesses, intelligences and naiveties, by leav-g the judging of our character to the Almighty, we come closer toving ourselves wholly and completely.

we love ourselves, we value our own hearts and mind for what they are. Why is it so hard for us to doe same for other people?

    orgiveness

or if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you doot forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

    Matthew 6:14-15, NIV)

n the practical sense, forgiveness is the attitude we must take toward our brothers and sisters if we are tove them fully and completely. Like us, they think and feel. Like us, they are human and flawed. Like us,ey make mistakes. We are all poor sinners on this earth together. Forgiveness is the soil in which love

    rows.

tand Against Priden many cases, we're stopped from forgiving others by our own pride. Think about the people in your lifeat you have yet to forgive, and think about why you've not taken that step. How have they wronged you?your pride involved? It is not enough to love only those who love you, who add to your own sense of

ory and accomplishment. You must also love those who do not love you.ut I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.

    Luke 6:27, NIV)

his is the only way love can grow and spread, and it is its greatest strength. Love begets love, even whereone existed before. Forgive your friends; forgive your enemies. Set down the pride and self-glory thateeps you apart from your fellow men.

he Love of Jesus Christhe sort of complete forgiveness and love summed up in the phrase "love your neighbor as yourself" ismost impossibly difficult to achieve for even the best of men. We are not perfect -- this much is clear.

owever, accepting Jesus Christ, the embodiment of these ideals, into our hearts and minds helps us toad lives that are more forgiving and loving. Christ gave freely of himself to those who asked, fulfilling

em with an unending supply of forgiveness and love.

    The Vow

    By Joseph MulderigCatholic News Service

NEW YORK (CNS) -- Poor Channing TaThough he isn't gone, he is forgotten in Vow" (Screen Gems), director and co-wMichael Sucsy's well-intentioned but flalove story based on real events.

Tatum plays Chicago recording engineer whose romance with -- and marriage to -- Paige (Rachel McAdams) have made hihappy man. That all changes, however, whcar accident injures them both, and leaves Pstricken with partial amnesia.

She awakens from a coma with no memof their idyllic courtship or successful lifgether. Instead, she has mentally reverted to

pre-Leo days as a law school student engaggo-getter ex-fiance Jeremy (Scott Speedm

When her estranged parents, Rita (JeLange) and Bill (Sam Neill), appear onscene, it develops that Paige also has losrecollection of the traumatic events that ledto separate from them.

Leo sets out to win Paige's heart all again. But Rita and Bill are angling to put

bewildered daughter back on the path to a career and drive her back into the arms of

ventionally respectable Jeremy. As penned by Sucsy in collaboration Abby Kohn, Marc Silverstein and JKatims, this romantic drama certainly

brates Leo's extraordinarily determined mfidelity. And it manages to strike a geneamiable tone as it does so.

But characterizations are shallow: M bohemian Leo, for example, takes on his niving 1-percenter in-laws, who we know

be evil because they, um, occupy an Archtural Digest-worthy home in Lake Fo

The tale's credibility -- and therefore its pact -- is also undercut by the excessive ness of the initial relationship between Leo

Paige. They're shown popping chocolates each other's mouths and they later writetheir self-composed wedding vows on mfrom their favorite eatery.

The film contains brief nongraphic mlovemaking, a premarital situation, fleetingnudity, an adultery theme, numerous sereferences and jokes, at least one use of proity as well as a couple of rough and about a-dozen crude terms. The Catholic News Seclassification is A-III -- adults. The MoPicture Association of America rating is PG-- parents strongly cautioned. Some matmay be inappropriate for children under 13.
