Welcome toCatholic Church at Fort Gordon, G

Scripture

“…a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity." (Exodus 34:6)

Blessed are you who look into the depths (Daniel 3:55)

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be

with all of you. (2 Corinthians 13:13)

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not

perish but might have eternal life. (John 3:16)

Reflection

Who always treats you with kindness and faithfulness?

If you were able to look past the superficiality that is the world and peer into the depth that is your

being, are you able to find a peace residing in that place?

What is the only way out of the chaos and conflict that is the world? How do you find this way?

When I consent to the will and mercy of God as it comes to me in the events of life appealing to my in-

ner self and awakening my faith, I break through the superficial exterior appearances that forms my

routine vision of the world and my own self, and I find myself in the presence of hidden majesty. It may

appear to me that this majesty and presence is something objective, “outside myself.” … Yet this is a

majesty that we do not see with our eyes and it is within ourselves. It is the mission of the Word and

Spirit, from the Father, in the depths of my own being. It is a majesty communicated to us, shared with

us, so that our whole being is filled with the gift of glory and responds with adoration.

PageA Week Ahead… THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI

Pro-Life Mass & RosaryMass First Saturday of each month at Saint Mary on the Hill, 9:15

Rosary at Preferred Health Center right after.

Next week, we will celebrate the Feast of Cor-pus Christi (Feast of the Body of Christ). Thisfeast is celebrated in the Latin Church on theThursday after  Trinity Sunday to solemnlycommemorate the institution of the HolyEucharist.

Of  Maundy Thursday, which commemoratesthis great event, mention is made as  NatalisCalicis (Birth of the Chalice) in the Calendar of Polemius (448) for the 24th of March, the 25thof March being in some places considered asthe day of the death of  Christ. This day, how-ever, was in Holy Week, a season of sadness, during which the minds of the faithful are ex-pected to be occupied with thoughts of the

Lord's Passion. Moreover, so many other func-tions took place on this day that the principalevent was almost lost sight of. This is men-tioned as the chief reason for the introduction of the new feast, in the Bull "Transiturus."

The instrument in the hand of  Divine Provi-dence was St. Juliana of  Mont Cornillon, inBelgium. She was born in 1193 at Retines near Liège.  Orphaned at an early age, she was edu-

cated  by the Augustinian nuns of Mont Cornil-lon. Here she in time made her religious profes-sion and later became superioress. Intrigues of various kinds several times drove her from her convent. She died 5 April, 1258, at the House of the Cistercian nuns at Fosses, and was buried atVilliers.

Juliana, from her early youth, had a greatveneration for the Blessed Sacrament, and al-ways longed for a special feast in its honor. This desire is said to have been increased by avision of the Church under the appearance of the full moon having one dark spot, which sig-nified the absence of such a solemnity. Shemade known her  ideas to Robert de Thorete,

then Bishop of Liège, to the learned DominicanHugh, later  cardinal legate in the  Netherlands, and to Jacques Pantaléon, at that time Archdea-con of  Liège, afterwards Bishop of  Verdun, Patriarch of Jerusalem, and finally Pope UrbanIV.

Bishop Robert was favourably impressed,

and, since bishops as yet had the right of order-ing feasts for their  dioceses, he called a synodin 1246 and ordered the celebration to be heldin the following year, also, that a monk namedJohn should write the Office for the occasion. The decree is preservedi n B i n t e r i m(Denkwürdigkeiten, V,1, 276), together with

parts of the Office.Bishop Robert did not

live to see the executionof his order, for he died16 October, 1246; butthe feast was celebratedfor the first time by thecanons of St. Martin atLiège.  Jacques Pan-taléon  became  pope 29August, 1261. The re-cluse Eve, with whomJuliana had spent sometime, and who was alsoa fervent adorer of the

Holy Eucharist, now urged Henry of Guelders,Bishop of Liège, to request the  pope to extendthe celebration to the entire world. Urban IV, always an admirer of the feast, published theBull "Transiturus" (8 September, 1264), inwhich, after having extolled the love of  Our Saviour  as expressed in the Holy Eucharist, heordered the annual celebration of Corpus Christiin the Thursday next after Trinity Sunday, at thesame time granting many indulgences to thefaithful for the attendance at Mass and at theOffice. This Office, composed at the request of the  pope   by the Angelic Doctor St. ThomasAquinas, is one of the most beautiful in theRoman Breviary and has been admired even by

Protestants. The death of Pope Urban IV

(2 October, 1264), shortlyafter the publication of thedecree, somewhat impededthe spread of the festival. Clement V again took the

matter in hand and, at the General CouncVienne (1311), once more ordered the adopof the feast. He published a new decree wembodied that of Urban IV. John XXII, susor of Clement V, urged its observance.

Neither  decree speaks of the theophoriccession as a feature of the celebration.  procession, already held in some places, endowed with indulgences  by Popes Martand Eugene IV.

The feast had been accepted in 1306 atlogne; Worms adopted it in 1315; Strasbu1316. In England it was introduced fromgium   between 1320 and 1325. In the UStates and some other countries the solemnheld on the Sunday after Trinity.

In the Greek Church the feast of CoChristi is known in the calendars of the SyrArmenians, Copts, Melchites, and the Rutans of Galicia, Calabria, and Sicily.
