    Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

    VOL. 4 FEBRUARY4-5, 2012 ISSUE

Welcome to Good Shepherd Chapel Scripture - Is not mans life on earth a drudgery? Are not his days those of hirelings? He is a slave who longs for theshade, a hireling who waits for his wages. (Job 7:1,2)- He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. (Psalm 147:3)- I have made myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as possible. (1 Corinthians 9:19)- He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them. (Mark1:31)

Reflection - What is Jesus mission?

    - What is Pauls mission? - What is your mission?- How does this occur in the parish faith community?

This is crucial: we must be converted and we must continue to be converted! We must let the Holy Spchange our lives! We must respond to Jesus Christ. And we must be open to the transforming power of theHoly Spirit who will continue to convert as we follow Christ. If our faith is alive, it will be aroused again andagain as we mature as disciples. 1

    Honor Begins at Home...

Four men, one calling: To serve and protect. As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, David Thomsonand Shane Fuller are confident and focused. Yet at the end othe day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly pre

    pared to tackle: fatherhood.

While they consistently give their best on the job, good enoughseems to be all they can muster as dads. But they're quicklydiscovering that their standard is missing the mark.

When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with theihopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God ... and to theichildren?

Filled with action-packed police drama, COURAGEOUS ifourth film from Sherwood Pictures, the moviemaking ministryof Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. Viewers wilonce again find themselves laughing, crying, and cheering athey are challenged and inspired by everyday heroes who lonto be the kinds of dads that make a lifelong impact on their children.

Protecting the streets is second nature to these men. Raisintheir children in a God-honoring way? That's courageous.

When surfing the Internet, I checked the Archdiocese of the MilitaryServices website and I found a page that provides several links to receivefree Catholic stuff to Military families. Last Thursday Feb 2nd, we celebrated the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Today the Church celebrates the feast of th e Pretion of the Lord which occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus and is also known as Candlemas day, since the blessing and processionof candles is included in today's liturgy. The feast was first observed in the Eastern Church as "The Encounter." In the sixth century, it

began to be observed in the West: in Rome with a more penitential character and in Gaul (France) with solemn blessings and processionsof candles, popularly known as "Candlemas." The Presentation of the Lord concludes the celebration of the Nativity and with the offer-ings of the Virgin Mother and the prophecy of Simeon, the events now point toward Easter."In obedience to the Old Law, the Lord Jesus, the first-born, was presented in the Temple by his Blessed Mother and his foster father.

This is another 'epiphany' celebration insofar as the Christ Child is revealed as the Messiah through the canticle and words of Simeonand the testimony of Anna the prophetess. Christ is the light of the nations, hence the blessing and procession of candles on this day. Inthe Middle Ages this feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or 'Candlemas,' was of great importance."The specific liturgy of this Candlemas feast, the blessing of candles, is not as widely celebrated as it should be, except o f course when-ever February 2 falls on a Sunday and thus takes precedence. There are two ways of celebrating the ceremony, either the Proce

which begins at a 'gathering place' outside the church, or the Solemn Entrance , celebrated within the church." From Ceremonies of the Liturgical Year, www.catholicculture.org/

    Movie Review

Christian Principles of StewardshipThe Importance of Household and Financial Management

ewardship, by Biblical definition, simply refers to the management of household and financial matters.steward is a manager, one who is faithful, diligent, has impeccable integrity and honesty, and is skill-lly competent.

salm 24:1 declares that " The earth is the LORD's, and all its fullness ." Therefore, the responsibility of ahristian steward is the God-given privilege to manage a part of God's property. Without this foundationalerspective, life's work becomes nothing more than a selfish pursuit.

he following are several areas that Christians can put the Christian principle of stewardship into practice.

Work vs. Laziness od built into man the ability and the need to work. It's the one thing a man can do hour after hour, dayter day. Work keeps a man's mind healthy. It is essential as an exchange for one's livelihood. No man

njoys being unemployed or unemployable, because God formed man with the natural desire to work.

od also designed man to need times of rest and refreshing, but that time should not be an excuse for lazi-ess. In the 6th century, sloth, or laziness, was taught as one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Sloth was de-ribed as "the only sin characterized by an absence or insufficiency of love, the failure to utilize one'slents and gifts, an unwillingness to act, an unwillingness to care." Observing the poor quality of lazyeople's lives should warn the Christian steward to avoid that path.

contrast, the Christian steward loves God, his wife and his children, and passionately desires to providee best possible lifestyle for his family. This love motivates him to get up and go to work every day, a

    uty which he willingly accepts.

owing and Reaping or the farmer, the most important component is the seed. All the soil preparation, fertilization, sunshinend water won't help if the seed is of poor quality. In life, if the crop is unsatisfactory, it is essential to payore attention to the quality and quantity of the seed sown.

owing includes giving money, time, talents and resources. Giving should be done with cheerfulness, andis not to be burdensome or grievous. For today's churches and assemblies to thrive, money is necessary.

With this in mind, there is no more important contribution to be made than to God's business. Proverbsaches to " honor the Lord with your possessions and with the first fruits of all your increase ." Prosperitythe guaranteed harvest.

anning and Prioritizing hink on paper. Planning saves time and time is not money, but life itself. Organizing priorities clarifiesnd places what is most important ahead of what is less important. Determining the most valuable use of me each moment of each hour of each day is recommended to achieve one's goals and be most produc-ve. " The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to pov-ty ."(Proverbs 21:5)

udgeting and Accounting y definition, budgeting is a detailed estimate of probable income and expenses and a plan of action basedn the estimate. As manager of family monetary details, it is important to know what's coming in, what'soing out and where it's going! Whatever accounting method one may prefer, it helps to visually track here money is going by category, identifying expenditures that may not be necessary, and transferringnds to other categories. Becoming proficient at budgeting and accounting takes time and faithfulness,

ut like anything, improvement comes with regular practice.

ebt wing money is burdensome, but with a plan and discipline, it is available to reduce and ultimately elimi-ate debt. Although sometimes challenging, the principles of sowing and reaping, and of giving and re-eiving, are vital to one's financial success and freedom, and must not take a back seat to debt payoff lans. Godly counsel is available, and worth pursuing. Financial debt should not become an obstacle tohristian service.

Wealth here is no sin in having money. The sin is in loving money more than loving God. The one who lovesoney will never be satisfied, and enough is never enough. God does want His people to live abundantlyevery category, but not be in bondage. It is the steward's privilege and joy to act as an agent or conduitr God's abundance to distribute according to needs as they arise.

xcellence in monetary matters, and handling of resources should be an impressive part of a Christian'sstimony. Seeking Godly counsel in order to continuously improve in all areas of stewardship is impera-ve. Faithfulness as a Christian steward is a requirement, not an option.

The Grey By Kurt JensenCatholic News Service

"The Grey" (Open Road) respectfully obeys thimmutable law of all story lines in which an aicraft crashes in the Arctic: Some folks are bounto get eaten.

This film, however, with its slight spiritu bent, ducks the cannibalism cliche and makwolves the hungry ones. The animals are doinwhat they're supposed to do by nature, stalking thsurvivors to thin out the human herd the bein the end, to kill them all.

Liam Neeson plays oil-rig worker JoOttway. He leads an ever-dwindling handful omen Hendrick, Diaz, Talget, Burke and Flanne(Dallas Roberts, Frank Grillo, Dermot Mulroney

Nonso Anozie and Joe Anderson, respectively)through howling winds, deep snow, fatigue antheir own anxieties after their plane crashes whilen route to Anchorage, Alaska.

That misfortune is significantly compounded bthe fact that they've come down too close to thwolves' den, leaving them targeted as invaders.

The script's attempts at profundity and spiritureflection, moreover, are wildly uneven. These oil-rig workers don't just swear constantland fight among themselves as they dodge the

predators. Each evening around the fire, they alsdebate the meaning of this life and the prospec

for life after death. Additionally, they demonstrata great deal of respect for those who perished ithe crash.

As the film opens, Ottway is shown to be slonely and depressed over missing his (unnamedwife Anne Openshaw, seen in flashbacks he attempts suicide. The crash thrusts him instantlinto a strong leadership role. But he eventuall

proves to be a fatalist, inspired by a Kiplingesqu poem his father wrote that ends, "Live and die othis day."

Toward the end, Ottway gazes into the slatcolored sky and as though following the advof Job's friends curses God. He does so, moover, with a vocabulary very far from scriptural. But this climactic moment is the strongest elemen

among several that, taken together, make this suvival story as much a morally inhospitable wilderness as its setting is a natural one. Given the meager rewards of trekking through it, even moadults would be well advised to decline the jouney altogether.

The film contains troubling themes inclusuicide and one character's blasphemous expresion of despair frequent gory animal attacks, least one use of profanity and pervasive roughcrude and crass language. The Catholic NewService classification is L limited adult audienfilms whose problematic content many adulwould find troubling. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is R restricted. February 24 (LEMS)March 2 (Knights of Columbus)

    March 9 (MCCW)March 16 (Ushers)

    March 23 (RE)March 30 (Youth)

Parishioners are welcome to bring their soupany Friday during Stations of the Cross.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and Endsbefore the celebration of the evening massof the Lords Supper on Holy Thursday.

The 40 days of Lent are not literally 40, but the number evokes all other uses of 40 in the scriptures. For 40 days Jesusfasted and prepared to proclaim the Good

News. Long before Jesus, Moses andElijah had their 40-days fasts. It rained onthe earth and on Noahs ark for 40 days, and the earth had a new beginning. And for 40 years the people of Israel wandered inthe wilderness toward the Promised Land.In the Bible, the number 40 means thatsomething important is taking place.

We enter Lent with ashes on our heads, and during the remaining days we fast invarious ways, perhaps by eating less foodand forgoing treats. We give alms, whichmeans that we find ways to share what wehave, our time and our goods, In theseways we remember our Baptism and so tryto grow more deeply in the Christian life.
