Geography focuses on the study of the Earth as the home of humans. As
a holistic discipline, it comprehends the complexities of natural and cultural systems
and how they relate to each other by examining human-environment interactions,
spatial processes, and development of places and localities. Such understandings could
bring about a better grasp of the factors that lead to the transformations of everyday spaces at different
scales – local, regional, global.
As the only Geography unit in the Philippines, the department hopes to bring Geography to where
it should be - at the center of decision-making in our country. It takes an active role in propagating
Geography in order to raise awareness on how daily lives are influenced by human-environment interactions
and empower localities in facing the challenges of a globalizing world.

GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY OF THE
UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES The Geographic Society of the University of the Philippines (GSUP) is
a non-profit college-based academic organization composed of individuals
who are driven together by a common goal and passion of promoting the
discipline of Geography in the Philippines. GSUP believes in the importance
and relevance of geography as a guiding discipline for the development of the
society. It was established in 1963, making it the first and oldest existing
geography organization in the university and in the Philippines.
This year, as we celebrate our 51st anniversary with the theme “We
Are Everywhere”, we have lined up a series of events, exemplifying our aims
to retrace our roots and frame our future. GSUP continues to grow
as the premiere geography organization that not only helps its individuals
to be exposed in the wonders of
geography but also helps for the betterment of

December 4, 2010 was a date remembered in history for the launch of the
very first Philippine Geographic Olympiad (PGO), an inter-high school
geography quiz bee that brought together geography enthusiasts from
different high schools in the country.
The event has been an excellent venue ever since for students to showcase
their skills and understanding in the field of geography through a series of
friendly scholastic competition. The winner of the competition shall have the
opportunity to represent the country in the International Geography
Olympiad (iGeo). For next year’s iGeo, it is going to be held in Tver Region,
Russia.
The successful launch of PGO paved the way for a grander competition. More
than 30 participating schools not only from Metro Manila but also from
Visayas and Mindanao gathered together in the second and third year of the
competition, held on December 3, 2011 and December 1, 2012 respectively.
On its fourth year, PGO brought together over 80 teams from 56 schools
nationwide last November 30, 2013.
Now on its fifth year, PGO continues to promote the active interest in the
science of Geography, enhance camaraderie, develop scholastic excellence
among students, and bring out the geographer in every participant.
