Cycling is a great sport which

    tests your endurance; an intense

    cardio workout for those who

are well into fitness. It is also an

    interesting group recreational activity you

can do with your family or friends. Over-all,

it is not simply a sport option but a lifestyle.

We may think that cycling is an easy

sport; a simple mount and pedal push

and youre off. There are a few importantthings to consider if you are serious about

getting into this sport. Starting with the very

intricate details of purchasing a bike. This

does not translate to walking into a store

and buying an obscenely expensive set of

wheels. You have to get a bike that suits

you and tailored-fit for you. Ponder on the

    following points before engaging.

    Reasons for riding a bike

This is a crucial factor that you need to

establish because it will lead to which type

of bike you will need to buy. Establish

whether you are looking to engage in

cycling to trim some excess pounds

or pursue it as a competitive sport and

    participate in racing events.

    Identify which terrain you want

to ride shred your bike on.

Cycling is only as effective as the wheels

chosen for the ground that its meant to

go on: mountain, paved road, dirt roads,

etc. There are various bike tires which are

effective on a specific ground. With this, you

have to determine whether you want to ride

on the mountain, paved road, around the

    village, etc.

    Commonly known bicycle

    options

There are three commonly known types of

bicycles: road bikes, mountain bikes and

urban bikes. Road bikes are lightweight

with slick, smooth tires. This type features

multiple gears but you can also find single-

speed and fixed-gear varieties. If you want

a bike that is great for racing, this is your

    best bet.

Theres a thing or two to learn about bikes before you get into the sport and invest

on this fitness tool. We ask Jami Ramirez, owner of Specialized, for some tips.

Mountain bikes, on the other hand have

distinct features that make it different from

others. It has thick, knobby tires with heavy

duty wheels. This bike is great to use on

rough terrains of rocks, loose sand or gravel.

An urban bike has slick tires like the road

bike but with grooves on them. It also has

different handle bars compared to the road

bike. This type of bike is recommended to

people who want to go biking to exercise.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU NEED

TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A BICYCLE

    The right bicycle for me

Not everything that is on display is the

right bike for you. Dont get suckered in

by sugarcoated sales talk. Go to a bike

shop you trust. Determining your goals will

help narrow down the process of choosing

the right set of wheels and gear suited

for you. Ask questions and let the sales

person explain the technicalities of it all.

Remember that it is possible to customizeeverything.

When you have settled on these things, you are set to go. This sport is for everybody. Itdoesnt matter if you feel that you are too small or on the heavy side. Get into the sport and

see what it does for you. PF

    I WANT TO RIDE MYBICYCLE

Tires Decide on whether you want to

use racing tires, training tires, knobby

    tires, etc.

Bars The bars width is completely

    dependent on your body type.

Saddle Know the right width and

height of the saddle. Your arch is being

measured and you may fall to low, mid or

    high.

Frame The right frame is relative to

    your height.

    Attention backpackers!

    Berghaus recently introduced

    original, while significantly

    reducing its weight. BIOFLEX

    Light, offers a range of

    rucksacks for backpackers.

The BIOFLEX Light packs are made out

of tough, lightweight fabrics and are fullof essential backpack features. They are

available in three sizes for men and three

    for women 65 litres (1.66kg), 50 (1.6kg

    or 1.51kg when stripped) and 35 (1.4kg,

Activate your lower leg and feet

    muscles to improve running

performance. The Mizuno Be is a

training shoe inspired by the ancient warajo

sandals worn by the samurai class and the

foot-soldiers during the feudal era of Japan.

The Mizuno Be features an activation sock

liner which allows the toes to move naturally

up and down, curl and grip. This activation

helps to strengthen two main muscles

across the base of the foot- the Flexor Digital

Longus and the Flexor Hallucis Longus-

    providing wearers with more propulsive

(toe off) strength which can help to improverunning. The natural oblique allows the

toes to spread as if barefoot which help to

    ALL-AROUND FITNESS

    DEFINED

    Gyms are plentiful around any

urban center and more so in

Metro Manila. A few years ago and

still in my quest to lose weight (I would

eventually go on to drop 42 lbs. of fat) I

entered my very first gym. It was typical

of many brochure gyms; bench press

stations, squat racks, rows of weight plates,

a couple of treadmills. Wanting to be

healthier and, of course, look better, I was

terrified. I also knew that exercising one

muscle group at a time would take time and

as someone who was overweight and weak

virtually my entire life, it was a no-no.

    I turned to cardio (running).

Fast forward to the present, I discovered

a new challenge. Its circuit training. At its

core, it uses all of our bodys major and

minor groups one after another in addition

to really jacking up our heart rates. For

a long time, I was a magazine athlete

learning my circuit sets by trial and

error and trying my best to rest as little as

possible. Then I found 360 Fitness, a gym

that is all about being both healthy and

strong, and it does this using an intense

    20-station circuit program.

The 360 Fitness gym stations cater to

virtually everyone. I had the pleasure

(in fact, towards the end, it was more of

displeasure but I did ask the trainer to

hurt me) of experiencing all levels, from

beginner to elite athlete. The program

    mixes-and-matches upper body strength

training such as pull-ups, with lower body

moves like dumbbell squats. In between

    are challenging core workouts. Throughout

the session all twenty stations there is

but one water break, so its guaranteed to

    keep your heart rate up.

What truly sets 360 Fitness gym apart from

other gyms which try to implement circuit

training is the fact that the gym does not

see this multi-station training center as an

add-on to their patrons and athletes-to-be.

The entire gym is created for fast-paced

and challenging training, where there is

literally no choice but to keep moving. It

    can accommodate simultaneous training

of twenty individuals at one person and

thirty seconds per station. What this means

is that your workout, all three sets of 10

minutes each, only uses the exact amount

of time you actually do need to use every

    single muscle in your body.

For beginners, you can expect a basic

but highly effective circuit training routine

    involving bodyweight-based motions

    WORDS: JASON CRUZ

which create a fitter and overall healthier

    you. More experienced gym-goers should

    try incorporating weighted multi-joint

movements and exercises for an intense

    challenge. For the experienced athletes,

360 Fitness gyms Level 5 Circuit is sure

    to make you feel as if youre sweating fat;

pull-ups followed by dumbbell jump squats

followed by kettle snatch-presses are just

    ridiculous.

I left 360 Fitness feeling like a warrior. I also

burned 500 calories in slightly less than 30

minutes. For anyone looking to be strong

and/or get summer ready all year round,

do yourself a favor and sign up for a free

trial session at any branch of 360 Fitness.

    MYTH 2:

Sit ups just dont cut it!

Truth:Sit-ups can be very effective in

    sculpting and toning your midsection

when done correctly; in a controlled

manner without the use of momentum.

Only this kind of move can aggravate the

condition of people with tight hip flexors.

To maximize the benefits of doing sit-

ups, start by mastering the basic crunch

lifting to an almost sitting position. It also

helps to cup one hand behind your neck

for support if it feels strained at any time

    within the workout.

    MYTH 3:

I need to do a routine with hundred

reps each to get visible results

Truth: This is absolutely a no-no

especially for those who are trying to

start a fitness routine. Knowing how to

work the muscle group correctly is more

important than the number of reps. You

can maximize results with slow, controlled

motions using proper form. Studies show

that if you are employing the correct form

    whenever you exercise the midsection,

two to three sets of 25 reps is enough totone your abdominal muscles.

    MYTH 4:

I need to do abs exercise

everyday to get my six pack abs

Truth: No! Like toning any other

muscle group, work your abs twice a

week to give it time to rest and develop

    stamina. The rectus abdominis muscle

found in the length of the torso faces the

danger of breaking down if you subject it

    to high-intensity training everyday.

    MYTH 1:

It is better to do abdominal

exercises at the end of your

    workout

Truth:While there are some who would

prefer to do abdominal moves at the start

of a routine, there are those who claim

that training your abs last preserves

your core strength for the earlier parts of

your workout. The only danger of giving

attention to your abs at the end of the

workout is that people tend to run out of

time and end up never doing the intended

    exercise for the muscle group.

Achieving the best toned abdominal muscles are surrounded with

various myths. Here are different exercise myths that you should do

    away with:

    Whoever says that getting your

    abdominal muscles in perfect

shape is easy is either a Greek

    divinity, whose exceptionally

    sculpted physique seems to

be nothing but a birthright, or

someone who never even tried to

    get in shape.

Compared to other muscles in the body,

    achieving your dream washboard abs

entails more work. Everyone has six pack

abs, only they are hidden beneath layers

of fat in the midsection. Even thin people

have this layers of fat, says Red Dela

Cruz, a fitness enthusiast. A combination

of hardwork and discipline is needed to

rid your midsection of the fats and get

your abdominal muscles in shape, she

continues. She also says that while most

people think that they cannot carry on with

the physical demands of getting in shape, there are ways on how to go about it to

make it easier. When done the proper way,

even the simplest form of exercise can

be very effective. It also helps to consult

a physician before you start taking on any

physical program, she confers. When it

is the middle section of the body that we

talk about in exercise, what you take in also

plays a very integral part. According to

Red, a person who wants to tone muscles

    must consciously increase protein intake

    and lower calorie consumption. Protein

aids in developing muscles especially after

    strenuous physical activities like exercise.

Protein also helps promote better bloodcirculation and skin, she shares. PF

    Not many people know that

before being a weatherman in TV

    Patrol and trivia-spewing host in

    Its Showtime and Matanglawin,

Kim Kuya Kim Atienza was an

    aerobics teacher in the RPN-9

fitness show Muscles in Motionin 1987. Back then, he did aerobics five

times a week and he also l ifted weights.

With his discipline and determination, he

got his body all worked up and made it to

the finals of Super Body in 1989.

Kuya Kim was a fitness buff. It was his job,

    his hobby, his lifestyle.

Though he loved everything about physical

exercise, things changed for him when he

decided to take a different route. When I

got into politics, when I got into televisionI

totally forgot about my fitness. I was so in

love especially with television. Thats all I

wanted to do. I was relying on my old fitnessto carry me through, he recounts. In 2010,

Kuya Kim had a stroke caused by a hole in

his heart. His near-death experience was

a realization of sorts, and only then did he

realize he needed to pay attention to his

fitness more. My doctor put me on rehab

work. Thats 30 minutes of walk every day

just to keep my heart going, he shares.

While he was on rehab work, Kuya Kim got

in touch with running coach and long time

pal Coach Ige Lopez. I was so inspired

by the fluid movements and form of Coach

Iges student when I saw them at the Polo

Club. So I approached him and asked him

to teach me how to run, he says.

Brisk walk became slow run, and slow run

became a run. Soon, Kuya Kim, the stroke

survivor was joining races and marathons.

And now under the able guidance of Coach

Ige, he runs every week in Makati with his

Team Gotta with fellow fitness enthusiasts

    Gilbert Remulla, Erwan Heusaff, Mark

    Gorrocieta, Mark Hernandez, Kevin Fule,

    and Isabel Daza.

At 46, Kuya Kim is as fit as fit can be. In fact,

he claims he is more fit now than he was

ever before. Thats what you expect fromsomeone who trains the whole morning

I just enjoy training somuch. Finishing in goodtime (in races) is a sidebenefit because I justenjoy doing this.

every day of every week, alternating

running, biking, and swimming. Im lucky

because although Im on TV, my schedules

are very predictable. My call time is

    11:30AM. So every morning, from 6 to 11, I

train, the TV host shares. Thats 35 hours of

training per week, qualifying the adik label

Kuya Kim has given to himself. In fact, even

without a race or event, you can expect him

training without letup. I just enjoy training

so much, he says. Finishing in good time

(in races) is a side benefit because I just

    enjoy doing this, he continues.

    HERE COMES THE TRIATHLETE

Winning his battle against stroke and

heart ailment makes Kuya Kim all the more

dedicated to keeping himself fit and healthy.

    After running, he eventually incorporated

biking in to his fitness routine. Then after

learning the ins and outs of running and

    biking, the mutli-awarded TV personality

took it a step further: he signed up for

Ironman 70.3. Such was a gutsy move

because he didnt know how to swim.

He was aware that guts alone couldnt

take him from one leg to the next, so to

challenge himself to train and have some

    form of accountability, he announced

his aggressive, crazy idea of joining

Half Ironman on Facebook and Twitter.

It occurred to me that the more people

knew about this, the harderand more

shamefulit would be to back out, he

says. Soon he was training under Nonoy

Basa for total immersion (TI) swimming.

In three months, he was gliding in the pool.

Im happy that I learned the TI way. I may

be a bit slower than you, but Im not tired. I

have all my energy for my bike and my run,

    he shares.

My challenge now, thissecond year, is how tocombine them all (swim, bike, run) strategicallyin such a way that I endup with good time

So at his first triathlon eventsCentury

Tuna 5150 and Ironman 70.3he was able

to swim tirelessly and eventually finished

strong. Recently he finished Anvaya Cove

Invitational Triathlon, which he described as

the most difficult triathlon event he ever joined.

But Kuya Kim, who enjoys pushing himself

to his limits, wants more action. In the lastquarter of this year, he is going to do his

first full Ironman. Thats only a year after

engaging in triathlonand three years after

his stroke. Last year my challenge was to

swim. My challenge now, this second year,

is how to combine them all (swim, bike,

run) strategically in such a way that I end up

    with good time, he confers.

    A TEAM PERSON

With his presence in the triathlon scene,

Kuya Kim has unmistakably become one of

the new poster boys of the multisport event.

It could be chalked up to his dedication

and intense passion for fitnessbut a lso,

    to his coaches.

Since day one, he knew the importance to

train under experts and learn to do things

the right way. For swim and for run, its

very important to have a training coach,

he admits. Swim is like golf. You can be

the strongest, the most fit person, but if

your technique is wrong, youll get tired.

But if your technique is right, you can do it

forever. You can do ten kilometers and not

    get tired, he says.

The same works for running, he says the

coach will help you develop the right form

to prevent injuries and watch you as you

do intervals, because intervals are painful.

Without a coach watching you, you wont

do it. Without a team running with you, if

you do it alone, you wont do it, he adds.

He says it all from experience. He went

from curious watcher to strategic learner to

one zealous triathlete. Its because he sets

his goals, and sets them high. And if only

to hold himself accountable for meeting his

goals, he shares his workout to his Twitter

and Facebook followers, who he inspires in

    the process.

There are many inspiring things about

his fitness journey, and this time around,

theres no stopping him. This is his second

life and so he chooses to return to his old

love, which once upon a time required him

to stretch his muscles in tight-fitting lycra

outfits but which now inspires him to swim,

bike, and run under the sun. PF

It may seem to be an all too

    common formula for an effective

    female sports caster: confidence

& good looks. But when one gets

drenched in the middle of a championship

celebration and still maintain poise and

focus while delivering information to all

the rabid basketball fans on live national

television, you know it takes more than just

    the skill.

    Erika Padilla understands her audience.

And she loves the sport. She was a fan of

basketball all her teenage years and until

now. It is this keen sense of knowing what

the viewers want to hear and throwing the

right questions at the players at just the right

time makes her a stand-out in this male-

    dominated world of basketball.

I think my being a tomboy makes the job

more comfortable. Im also a big fan of

sports and fitness so details of the job are

    really very enjoyable

With all the machismo that dominates this

sport, it is easy to dismiss Erika as a simple

eye candy. She posseses that effective

charm thats both hard to miss and hard

to resist. But whats not known to many

is that she is a multi-talented and multi-

tasking artist. Apart from being a courtside

reporter for PBA at AKTV, she is also anactress (she bagged a few movie roles

and currently busy with the final tapings

of Kidlat), a film producer (she produced

an indie film entitled Madaling Araw

    Mahabang Gabi), and a businesswoman.

She started out modeling as a teenager

before signing up as a member of Star

Magic batch 16. This eventually opened up

opportunities in her acting career where

she has done roles in movies and soap

    operas.

With a degree in Political Science from the

Ateneo de Manila University, she is able

to manage both her career and businesswisely. However, she admits to one thing

Learning about peoples stories is also

very fascinating and interesting for me.

I love talking to people and learning a

    lot from what they share.

    ERIKA PADILLAlady of the courtside

that keeps her truly happy. Learning

about peoples stories is fascinating and

interesting for me. I live talking to people

and learning a lot from what they have to

share. This is evident in the way she easily

warms up to people around her. She keeps

a simple list of daily things to do to get her

through the day and this includes singing

    and laughing.

Yoga is what keeps her fit. It also helps

calm her mind and stay focused to carry

out different roles on a regular basis. Ivestarted running. Not a big fan of it but i

want to be open to different options on how

to keep fit. People seem to be enjoying

it, because of all these marathons and

triathlons etc, and I would like to see if i can

learn to appreciate it in time. Haha! I used

to surf, but i havent lately because of work. I

wish i could do that again soon, and once I

restart, I will make sure to be consistent.

She adds that being busy is not an excuse

to give up exercise and healthy lifestyle. I

truly believe that the tandem of the mind

and body results in unparalleled power that

brings peace and happiness. Keeping a

work-life balance and attention to details are

    key for Erika. PF

GOLDS GYM KICKS OFFGRAND 10TH YEARCELEBRATION WITH MUSIC,ENTERTAINMENT, AND

    PREMIER FITNESS LIFESTYLE

    Good music, top celebrities,

    fitness experts and healthy

lifestyle at its finest - all these

in one night as Golds Gym

kicked off its grand tenth year

    celebration as one of Philippines

    leading fitness chains.

Golds Gym Philippines celebrated its 10

years in the industry by opening three new

locations. The new gyms are in Centris

Mall in EDSA (corner of Quezon Avenue),

Lucky Chinatown 3 in Binondo and in New

Manila (Hemady corner E. Rodriguez). In a

few months, new clubs in Clark (Berthaphil)

and Tropicana Marikina will open. Before

the year ends, a Golds Gym will emerge at

    BlueBay Walk in Bay City.

A Music Festival for staff and members,

a non-stop celebration filled with various

activities and slew of events, was held in

Centris recently. The festivity kicked off

with a ribbon cutting in Centris Walk led

by Golds Gyms celebrity endorsers and

clients Martin Del Rosario, Benjamin Alves,

    Cesca Litton, and Gwen Ruais.

    Two-time Mr. USA winner (2009 and 2011)

    and Golds Gym International Franchising

Director Tamer El Guindy, was guest of

honor. Also known as The Razor for his

super conditioning, Tamer is the ideal man

to market the brand all around the globe

having worked for Golds for almost 15 years.

He imparted some of his expertise in his

exclusive press conference held on the day

of the momentous affair. His talk covered the

FST-7 program for athletes and tackled in-

depth topics like proper diet and exercise.

When asked about his opinion regarding

the importance of exercise in the state of

fitness of the community, he answered, In

the past, people are working out because

they know it is good for them. But that is

no longer the truth. Working out is now a

necessity. Not working out is already bad for

you. Exercising is now a form of preventive

    medicine.

This very fact is the same reason why

Tamer looks up so much to Golds Gym

    Philippines Chief Executive Officer Mylene

    Dayrit and her partners.

She has built a business which people can

really be proud of. She really has returned a

lot to the community by making the Filipinos

more healthy. I think as businessmen,

we always have a responsibility to our

community. It is not just about having

    profitable venues but about doing

something in life thats good for people.

    Mylene has unquestionably done that.

The grand event was just the beginning

of the leading fitness brands year long

    celebration for its decennial anniversary.

After a decade of being a leader in the

industry, Golds Gym is ready to raise the

bar again with its Stronger with Golds

campaign along with the gamut of other

activities. For one, the campaign endeavors

Filipinos to change their lives by being fitter,

    better, and stronger.

Golds Gym was able to carve its name

prominently in the Philippines f itness

lifestyle scene by being the sole celebrity

and athlete gym in the country. After helping

a lot of names become stronger and better,

the brand remains the gym of choice of stars

and other professionals who want to be at

    their best form.

In the end, the question still remains, What

makes Golds Gym more special than other

fitness brands out there? Is it the good

    community, the knowledgeable trainers, the

    top-notch facilities, or the classes?

For fitness icon Tamer, Golds Gym is all

these things combined and more. We dont

sell memberships. We sell results. We want

people to go home to their family and be

confident that they can spend their time

longer with their loved ones because of

their healthy lifestyle. For him, it is not the

money or even the success of the business.

Its about opening other peoples eyes

and helping them lead a better life. This

business, which has been proving itself in

the industry for a decade now, can therefore

be defined in one simple line - Golds Gym

    has a heart. PF

    BROTHERSIN ARMS

    WORDS: MOXX DE VERA

    Theres something about a sport

that gets to you. For some, its about

the win and how you play, while others are

content to simply watch and enjoy on the

sidelines. For me, theres nothing more

satisfying than doing the sport you love the most.

About four or five years ago, I was

introduced to boxing by my younger

brother; none other than the TV heartthrob

JC de Vera. He had always been athletic

being a high school basketball jock. He

started with weights and eventually started

boxing. I have also been athletic in my

younger years. I played a lot of football. I

also trained with my schools Taekwondo

Team back in CSA Makati but was very

stubborn to try promotion. These kept me

fit for a time until I hit college, where all

    temptations came about.

I got a little heavy because of the lack of

physical training and I was still eating the

same amount back when I was very active.

I got lazier to workout and got into the usual

vices. Around that time, Manny Pacquiao

was gaining popularity and the sport was

booming. I told myself maybe I could get

back in shape with boxing and regain my

confidence. On my spare time, and when

JC doesnt have work, I would tag along

with him in Elorde Gilmore in New Manila.

JC was able to try out the different gyms

and got introduced to Erwin Tagle and

became good friends. He introduced him to

Muay Thai and the different disciplines of

mixed martial arts. I joined JC at Sub-sports

a couple of times and got taught the basics.

After that experience, I knew I found my

sport. We were trained the proper kicks

and combination with the punches. I was

enjoying it but I ran into a small problem.

    My background with Taekwondo and

boxing made it hard for me to adjust to the

new form of Muay Thai. There were a lot

of things I had to learn and unlearn. Its

a totally different animal and you have to

come into terms with it both physically and

mentally. It took me about 3 years and only

until now that I was able to get things right. I

    am still learning though.

It has taught me a lot about my body. It takes

a lot of dedication and sacrifice. I thought Id

gauge my progress by joining the inter-

Elorde amateur tournament called UKC. JC

and I are joining the 11th tournament againthis May 25-26, 2013 to be held at the Elorde

Sports Complex in Sucat, Paraaque. Weve

successfully won our previous bouts, JC with

amateur boxing and I with amateur Muay

Thai. It is not as big as PXC or URCC and we

cant really brag about the plastic medals but we

do take pride with the achievements of training.

We would train together when our schedules

meet. Wed often do some light spar

and sadly, Ive lost to JC as far as I can

remember but without shame since hes

got more experience and in way better

shape than I am, though I find no excuse.

Anyway, sparring is for learning sessionthat simulates an actual fight where you can

apply everything youve learned. This is

an important part of training that we both take

    seriously.

Muay Thai has helped me become a better

person. Ive given up smoking and only

drink occasionally. Ive also trimmed down

a lot since my chubby days and have given

    me new confidence.

I am the eldest of three boys. JC is the

middle child and RJ, our youngest, who has

also gotten into boxing before, now also

does Muay Thai in his spare time. We all

have different interests given our 3 years

gap (each), but we have found a common

interest in this sport. Somewhere between the

sweat, the sore muscles and bleeding noses,

we find fun and in a way a great way to bond.

I believe in the masters words the Great

Bruce Lee. Be like water, my friend. One

must build himself. Pick the activity that

works for you. Always have a goal in mind

and challenge yourself to go beyond yourown limits, not of others. Above all, do

something that makes you happy. PF

    RUNNING THE

    NATURAL WAYTOGETHER

If in a race you chance upon a

    shoeless runner, dont give him

a weird look. Yes, hes serious about

it. No, hes not crazy. Yes, hes perfectly

fine running barefoot, thank you. In fact, he

immensely enjoys it that you dont need to

    lend him your shoes.

Barefoot running is his philosophy, and this

is how he wants to run.

The concept of barefoot running is

popularized by the book Born to Run by

    Christopher McDougall. Here he explores

    the running technique of Mexicos

Tarahumara Indians, who run hundreds of

miles in their bare feet or homemade sandals

with unbelievable strength and no injuries.

This idea caught on in the Philippines and

gave birth to several Filipino barefooters,

but it wasnt until Barefoot Running

Philippines (BRP) was formed did they get

    together into one solid group.

It all started with a barefoot running clinic

spearheaded by Lt. Col. Michael Logico,

Dave Drilon, and Dindo Magallanes at

Bonifacio Global City in February 2012. Nextthing they knew, the running clinic turned

into a group and was attracting not only

    barefoot running advocates and enthusiasts,

but also those who are curious enough to try

    this kind of minimalist running.

With Coach Michael at the helm, BRP

teaches runners the proper way of barefoot

running. Its not like youre running 42K

and then just thought of taking your shoes

off and do barefoot. You really have to take

it slow back to basic, says BRP member

Rose Marie Lozano. And because running

barefoot is a whole new running territory,

the group mainly focuses on developing

the right form and proper landing. Its the

cycle motion. You have to bend and make

small strides, says member Evelyn Lopez,

noting that running fast could lead to heel

strikes, which in turn will scratch the heel.

When you run with shoes, you have thetendency to heel strike, she continues.

With barefoot running, however, a runner

lands on forefoot or midfoot. So adjusting

from heel landing to forefoot or midfoot

landing is necessary. If proper form is

not developed, a barefoot runner is more

prone to injuries. But if done right, barefoot

running could speed up the recovery

    process and lessen injuries.

    BRP teaches runners beyond the

technicalities of barefoot running. It inspires

    changes in their running philosophy.

This casual, friendly, and open community

aims to simplify running and inspire others

to give barefoot running a try. And theyreglad that barefoot running is gaining more

attention. People are curious, Evelyn says. If

they see someone running barefoot, they ask.

Normally, though, they ask if it hurts, and

barefoot runners have one answer: It

doesnt. And you have to believe them.

Nowhere in their faces it is said that this

hurts, or odd, or anything out of ordinary. In

fact, if their solesno trace of callous, mind

a fun, novel way to run.PF

to adapt to the environment, it encourages

them to focus less on the run and be more

aware of the route, the road, their bodies.

Its not about the run itself. Its about your

    thinking, your own philosophywhy youre

doing this, says Rose. When we run,

normally we dont compete. We enjoy the

run. We dont run to finish gold. We dont do

    that, she furthers.

BRP members from all walks of life and

from different age groups meet every

BGC, they are not necessarily a BGC-based

    CONDURASKYWAYMARATHON

    FEBRUARY3

    More than 14,000 runners once

again converge to race at the Condura

Skyway Marathon that took place last

February 3, 2013. Where each runner through

their registration, gets to donate three

mangrove seedlings which will be planted

in his/her name as part of the advocacy

of helping with the reforestation of the

Mangroves in Zamboanga de Sibugay in

    partnership with Philippine Tropical Forest

    Conservation Foundation (PTFCF).

A simple yet fun event! Kudos Pinoy

Fitness and Run for Change! More

to come! Ang saya! Next year ulit!

These were among the heartwarming and

inspiring feedbacks received after the staging

of the 1st Pinoy Fitness Run For Change event

held last December 16, 2012 at Bonifacio

Global City. The run event was in cooperation

with Run4Change to help provide athleticscholarships grants for athletes who wish to

pursue Masteral or Doctorate degrees in Sports

Science or related fields schools and to sponsor

uniforms, training equipment and provide meal

allowances for numerous Varsity Teams from

    different schools.

One of the highlights of this event was its being

a Green Race run made possibly together with

Nathan. No littered plastic nor paper cups

    scattered along the routes.

    Only refilling water stations. Participants

    welcomed this environment-friendly practice

    and hopefully it continues.

The Pinoy Fitness Family and Community has

indeed expanded and continues to grow big.

The debut fun run also wouldnt be possible

without the unwavering love and support of

the different running groups. It was a joyous

grand reunion graced by Pinoy Fitness early and

current supporters plus a lot of new ones.
