ACADEMIC WORK2009 - 2011

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO: STRATEGYAUTUMN 2010This project examined architectural design strategies in existing buildings - those of the Seattle Public Library (OMA) and Utzon’s Sydney Opera House. Crossing the relationship of these strategies then led to the development of an entirely new design to be situated on a very narrow site on Sussex Street in Sydney’s CBD.Abstract models represented the strategies employed by these new designs which were complimented with design drawings highlighting levels of circulation through the space, and an image portraying the proposed design in context.

STRATEGY MODEL

The strategic organisation of spaces to satisfy experiential ambitions, proposed use and urban context was the focus of this study. Issues of horizontal and vertical circulation and movement, sequence, hierarchy and proximity were developed through section and plan drawings and models. Aspects of privacy, enclosure, permeability, sequence and transpar-ency in regard to individual spaces within the organisation of spaces were considered. Techniques for conveying and designing the experience of occupying and moving through space, as well as the temporal uses of dierent spaces, were developed. These included diagrams, animated y-throughs and sketches. Design was explored as an iterative process through these techniques.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO: STRATEGYAUTUMN 2010

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN: PERFORMANCESPRING 2010

This project explores the concept of the active building and the creative user, recognising that buildings are mediators of environmental variables, as well as contributors to environmental change. Consideration of environmental impacts on its immediate vicinity including its consumption of materials and energy were taken into consideration. Along with the techniques for minimising energy consumption, the project also considers other aspects of performance that might be addressed through concepts of interactivity, responsiveness and experiential design. Links are made between quantitative aspects of building performance and experiential aspects of performativity in the built environ-ment. The shift is made from the design of static and passive form, to architecture as an active contributor.

The design challenges the denition of ‘boundaries’ on the site. The envelope is no longer an enclosure, but an interactive and functional element incorporated into the design itself, creating a seamless medium between the design and surrounding context. The layers of circulation include a ground level pedestrian space/thoroughfare with connections to surrounding streets, drawing passers by into the site. This level also has sub upper and lower levels integrating moments of performance (a small raised stage/pavillion and a sunken skate park). Above this lies an upper pedestrian/user level, with seemingly hovering extensions over the ground level used as spaces such as an outdoor gallery, shopping terrace or cafe area. The level above this is a high rise bicycle overpass with connections to nearby public transport hubs and other cycle paths in the area. The cycle path includes a circuit as well as a safe bike storage space which becomes the sculptural centrepiece for the entire design.

The layout, positioning and shape of the main elements on the site was developed via studies relating to sun paths across the site throughout the year, overshadowing of neighbouring buildings and potential views down surrounding streets. The experience of the user within the space was of utmost importance throughout all stages of the project.

Sydney is currently a city of smaller communities with hubs of use distributed across its periphery. It is not uncommon for a person to travel the same route to and from a workplace every day, interacting only with those on a path echoing their own. As a result, there may be no direct instances of collision between groups of people functioning on parallel or alternate paths. What follows is a continually narrowing network of connectivity between specic groups of people.Rather than a diverging network we propose in this masterplan, a network which not only encourages, but enforces collisions between users of the site in North Ryde, in an attempt to diversify the connections between them. The programmatic spaces in the proposed infrastructure are woven into each other in a dense fabric, which fuses the routines of users at specic junctions. This begins at ground level: The top half of the grid system aims to draw in commuters and users of the space before causing moments of interaction, then dispersing them back out through the site. This is achieved through visual lines of sight enticing users and forcing interaction in a mixture of outdoor public spaces, and arcade-like waynding through and around the surrounding residential, retail and commercial spaces. The lower half of the site circulates in direct relation to the centrepoints formed by the repeated and fractured modules. This project is a study at the urban level, as an intervention of the space around North Ryde train station. The project started with a number of massing studies repeated at dierent scales as a basis for understanding the relationships between buildings, and the infrastructure in which they are situated, particularly linkages to the surrounding area to activate the site within Sydney’s public transport network. Both quantitative and qualitative evaluations were undertaken at each stage of the project to understand the impact of the design on the urban identity of the area, as well as accounting for the many competing interests in the design of public and commercial spaces, and understanding the eld of negotiation in which an architect makes proposals.

This project: ‘BONES + SKIN’, focuses on the performance of and relationship between the structural system of a building (’bones’), to its facade (’skin’). The aim was to design both systems using paramet-ric variations which interact with each other, resulting in a rened, structurally sound design.

The chosen typology was a scientic research centre and laboratory. The shape of the oorplates were the driving force for the form of the structural system, and were designed based on a series of sketches of molecular structures. A set of structural frames enveloping the building became the structural support, each frame an alteration of the previous one based on the shape of the oor plates and alternating between load-bearing support, and separation from the levels to create void spaces.

SYNTHETIC DIAGRAM EXPLAINING ORGANISATION OF CRITERIA AND RESPONSIVENESS OF DESIGN

This diagram explains the synthesis of the design throughout each stage of the project. A series of variations were explored through tests in order to come up with the nal design. A number of prec-edents were studied and elements were reected in the new design. The aim was to have a sense that the oor plates are almost oating, and that the skin is structurally separate from them. The resulting skin and skeleton have a very distinct relationship, relating strongly to each other as they intertwine; the skin not always necessarily on the exterior side of the frame system, the two elements undulating around one another.

This project was a study of structural variations on a building. An existing building’s structural system was closely examined and modelled (Casa Da Musica - Porto, Spain - OMA). A number of physical strains were then put on the existing structure, which in turn altered the structural system signicantly in order to accommodate these changes.

PLAYFUL GARDENSGRAPHIC DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION AIDS2010Playful Gardens is a small landscape architecture business which creates fun, welcoming and child-friendly garden designs for it’s clients. The company needed a logo and business card design which would reect these qualities and easily convey them to potential clients. The business also required some very personalised represen-tations of design ideas to present to clients, to use as a language which reects the style of the company. These were created using photographs of the existing site as a template for testing potential design solutions.
