School of Social Sciencesand Humanities
From the Dean's Desk
It is an honour to present students of the outgoing batch of
2017-19 of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities
(SSSH) to prospective employers and recruiters. SSSH has four
centres that comprise the School. They are: Centre for Ecology,
Environment and Sustainable Development (CEESD), Centre for
Labour Studies and Social Protection (CLSSP), Centre for Peace
and Conflict Studies (CPaCS) and Centre for Sociology and
Social Anthropology (CSSA). All the centres have sought to
integrate cutting edge developments in various social sciences
disciplines, with an in-depth knowledge of the field. Our location
in Guwahati allows us a unique view of South and Southeast
Asia, of Himalayan Mountains, foothills, river valleys and flood
plains. We are aware of our location at the crossroads of vibrant,
historic migratory routes that connect this distinctive landscape,
where old conflicts and contests over resources require new,
sustainable pathways of engagement.
The students who are graduating from the four centres exemplify
the School's commitment to scholarship and fieldwork, as well
as our vision of becoming a repository for generating knowledge
and incubate new ideas for working on the eastern Himalayan
region of India and its transnational neighbourhood. In the two
years that they have spent in our midst, each student has shown
immense aptitude for growth and hard work. I have no doubt
that they will prove to be assets at their new workplaces and I
wish them the very best.
Dr. Sanjay Barbora
Dean, School of Social Sciences & Humanities

EESD is a platform where a Homo sapien (meaning - wise man) gets the scope to apply
his or her wisdom in understanding the harmonical balance of nature…a space where
topic like 'Development' is subjectively construed by cultural and environmental
determinism.
Dr. Abhinandan Saikia
Chairperson, Centre for Ecology, Environment and Sustainable Development
LSSP's unique proposition lies in its multidisciplinary curriculum which is a perfect mix
of Labour Economics, Labour Laws, Social Security, Industrial Relations, Human
Resource Management and Corporate Governance along with conventional economics,
politics, sociology, psychology and statistics.
Dr. Rajdeep Singha
Chairperson, Centre for Labour Studies and Social Protection
PaCS allows the student to make the most of a conscientious focus on the history,
sociology and politics of conflict and violence, as well as ensuring that she/he is able to
engage with wider range of field-based issues with peace practitioners, policy makers
and agencies.
Dr. Yengkhom Jilangamba
Chairperson, Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies
SSA is designed to integrate the discipline of Sociology and Social Anthropology with a
view to have a comparative and systematic understanding of the society and its

The Centre of Ecology, Environment and Sustainable
Development (EESD) runs a unique interdisciplinary MA
Programme that integrates theoretical and methodological
perspectives from ecological sciences and social sciences,
incorporating technical skills such as GIS, Remote sensing and
sampling techniques in order to provide its graduates with
holistic environmental education.
The main thrust of EESD is to investigate and interpret issues
related to sustainability and resilience confronting
contemporary societies through holistic ecology approach of
'web of life' that sees human kind as a part of interconnected
natural and social systems. This is triggered by the limitations
such as pollution, population-growth, inequality, abuse of
public and natural resources, global warming and climate
change, to name a few.
The Centre setting its location in between two of the Bio-
diversity hotspots of India, Indo-Burma and Eastern Himalayas
and ecologically fragile/conflict zone of South Asia and South
East Asia, along with rich indigenous diversity reflecting in
region's ethnographic specificities as well as student
composition provide fertile grounds for students to engage
directly with the 'laboratory of life'. Accordingly, the courses at
EESD are designed to build knowledge on ecology and society
through a combination of theoretical knowledge, awareness of
contemporary environmental issues and fieldwork experiences.

M.A. in Labour Studiesand Social ProtectionIn the last three decades, there has been a fundamental change in
employment patterns and employment relations. The course
stands unique among other labour studies and conventional
management courses in the country as it focuses on finding
sustainable solutions to the labour related issues in the country
without discrediting the need for growth and profit. The course's
unique proposition lies in its curricula, which strikes a perfect
blend of interdisciplinary subjects, namely, Labour Economics,
Labour Laws, Industrial Relations, Human Resource
Management, Corporate Governance, and others with those of
conventional Social Sciences subjects such as economics,
politics, sociology and psychology. Moreover, it is one of the few
courses in the country which puts special thrust on Social
Security of employees/workers.

Sociology and Social Anthropology had its origins as two distinct
disciplines in Europe in the 19th century. Sociology emerged as
the study of predominantly industrial society and social
anthropology as the study of non-industrial societies. The
distinction was continued in India too. Today, there is a need to
interrogate the separation of the two disciplines, especially in
light of the self-reflective turn that the disciplines have taken over
the past few decades, both in India and in other parts of the world.
In keeping with these realities, the program is designed to
integrate the discipline of Sociology and Social Anthropology with
a view to have a comparative and systematic understanding of the
society and its institutions. Such a program is most suited
considering the regional location of TISS, Guwahati Campus,
where an entire region is on the cusp of a profound social,
economic and cultural transformation.
Objectives• To develop the critical, analytical, organizational, and communication skills in students that will enable them to master new tasks
and solve many new problems throughout their careers.
• To learn from multicultural and global understandings of how societies function and change.
• To equip students with creative and persuasive writing skills.
• To ground students theoretically and methodologically, in order to enable career advancements in a diverse global society that
requires the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people from different cultures, ethnicities and nationalities.
• To help them pursue a host of possible vocational callings and careers.
Key Components• Disciplinary course work in perspective building, theoretical groundings, social, economic and political issues.
• Field work/Study tour
• Field based dissertation
• Choice based courses from Inter-Programs courses comprising core or skill based courses at the campus.
• Skill enhancement programs in research methods and design, interviewing, statistical analysis, essay writing and ethnographic
methods.

their understanding on issues related to
poverty, development, patterns of
discrimination, exclusion, political
economy, the idea of State and the role of
Civil Society.
FC-1: Understanding Society, Culture
and Identity
FC-2: Economy, Polity and Governance
FC-3: Social Exclusions and Social

PedagogyEncompasses theoretical inputs
along with the experiences that the
students may have had on their
own, especially during their field
work and in the past. Some other
aspects that are covered are:
• Self-learning
• Project specific engagement
• Library work
• 16 electives and one month of block placement
• Tutorials using classroom inputs ( audio-visual aids), leading to discussions and reflections
Field WorkThe social work programme gives a lot
of emphasis to fieldwork education
and is one of the best among other
social work institutions. Learning by
doing, is the pedagogical approach
that is adopted. Fieldwork education
carries a weightage of 24 credits
across four semesters. The fieldwork
exposure, aims to facilitate the
student to critically reflect about self,
social structure/systems/situations,
through the guided process of
fieldwork supervision. All the four
courses engage in block fieldwork for
a month, across the country and only
for third semester, counselling
students are engaged in concurrent
fieldwork, over two specified days a
week, for three months.
RuralPracticum A student who pursues their Masters of Arts
in Social Work is expected and given the
opportunity to understand the crux of issues
of poverty, which is a deep-seated problem
when it comes to any form of development.
Therefore, an exposure with the help of a
“rural exposure” will allow the students from
all walks of life to either gain or build on
knowledge and create a lens for themselves
(making it easier for them to envisage in
social work viewpoints). The Rural Practicum
is placed at the end of the second semester
and is a compulsory, non-credit component
within the two-year programme.
DissertationThe field-based dissertation is a
supervised research project for all
students who are to take up the Master's
programme. The aim is to equip the
students with research methods of social
work and encourage them to unlock new
perspectives and theories in their field of
research. The thesis has to be submitted
by the end of the second year and should
be of utmost originality.

Social Work with its simultaneous focus on human dignity and worth and quest for social justice has evolved into a generalist profession
which combines skill-sets and methods known to and employed by professionals according to the situation at hand. Hence there is a
need to enhance social work practice to strengthen the development efforts of the people by increasing desired capabilities.
The quagmire of complexities that exist in today's world creates conditions of stress, which are extremely difficult to cope with. The
tremendous expansion of counselling over the last 20 years reflects the changing nature of society, an increase in the number of people
perceiving a need for professional help with their problems, and a growing recognition of the value of such support. There has also been
widespread recognition of the value of an understanding of counselling theory and skills to other 'people oriented' professions, such as
human resources, whether in the private or public sector.

M.A. in Social Work(Livelihoods and SocialEntrepreneurship)MA Social Work in Livelihoods and Social Entrepreneurship intends to provide its students with knowledge, skills, and attitude to
initiate and innovate work with optimal social impact in the field of livelihoods and social entrepreneurship.
The mode of learning has a blend of theoretical analysis of existing models of sustainable livelihood and social entrepreneurship within
the context of Social Work discipline, research on livelihood trends and emerging possibilities, and understanding of incubations, start-
ups, etc.
Through the block fieldwork placements, the students get the help to make choice decision in the kind of organisation they look forward
to beginning their professional life with.
The programme aims at two-fold approach for placement. Firstly, every possible effort is made to place the students within the sector
ranging from organisations which are into direct implementation, research, advocacy, project management, policy, think-tank, donor
and funding, etc. Secondly, the students are encouraged and facilitated to start their own social enterprise.
Objectives• Understanding the linkages with existing livelihood initiatives, rights, and opportunities which affect poor, women and
vulnerable and marginal communities.
• Instilling social entrepreneurial attributes in young professionals.
• Preparing students to build and manage enterprises thereby creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for the poor and
disadvantaged.

guidelines for maintaining uniformity:
1. Organisations interested in recruiting students will have to communicate their
requirement in the prescribed Placement Form, as per the schedule communicated.
2. The procedure for allocation of slots for prospective ROs will be done based on the
following points:
