POD OBJECTIVE

Property is the best-performing investment; the Pod-iDladla is a way to keep housing affordable so that young people in particular need not be excluded from getting a foot on the property ladder.

The pod is transportable, making it possible to own a home and placing it where you have negotiated land-use rights with the landowner. It therefore opens up new ways of a synergy between houses and property ownership. In addition to serving as a primary residence, other uses can be a studio, a holiday home or student accommodation. Height and volume are central to our perception of space and a number of strategies are employed to make the 17m2 space appear bigger than it is:- The double volume creates a passive

ventilation flow.- Spaces are maximised through dual function.- The covered deck extends the living quarters outwards, making the inside-outside connection bigger and oriented towards more social living.

The collaboration between the architect and product designers Dokter And Misses, developed a sound creative flow in the design of interior furnishings. Flexibility was used in the lighting strategy where lamps are all moveable and can be hung from hooks placed strategically. The storage units are modular and can be incrementally added; foldaway furniture used makes a compact cube out of a couch; pull-out bedside tables and drawers create extra storage.

THE POD-IDLADLA IS A MODULAR, PREFABRICATED NANO-HOME, DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED IN SOUTH AFRICA.

PREFABRICATEDEach is prefabricated off-site, to each client ‘s specification, allowing one to start simply with a shell or to go for a full-on kitted out interior.

MODULARSeveral 17-square-meter units can be positioned in various configurations to form larger, multi-use living areas.

POD ECONOMY / SUSTAINABILITY

Pre-fabrication ensures quality, lower labour costs, added productivity and reduces material waste to just 2%. The land-lease system common between public and private property development removes the cost of land from the initial house price.

The module is fitted with energy saving devices appropriate to it’s size and location. Specific advice is given for each Pod’s location.

POD CONSTRUCTION TYPE

It is a ventilated wall system structured with timber products. Timber has the highest acoustic and thermal performance, responds better than most materials under fire and has the lowest embodied energy. The main frame can be steel, structured timber or folded aluminium plates. The decking is modular and can adapted to site conditions.

BASIC POD

17.2 SQUARE METERSEach space is designed to have a dual use; spaces are not named as conventional rooms; the owner is free to change their use as needed.

It sleeps two comfortably in the mezzanine area. The downstairs task area can accommodate an occasional guest and doubles as an office / laundry / storage uses. The space of passage between front and back houses a shower area and the outdoor deck encourages indoor-outdoor living.
