Tasked with an urban site in the South End neighborhood of Boston and a difficult program list, I set out to design a Performing and Visual Arts High School that responded to the artist/student’s need to create and improvise. Drawing inspiration from the uban topography (the way the urban fabric creates valleys and canyons on the street level), I progressively scaled down my parti to that of the stone, learning from the lessons of the natural world as an inspiration for my design.

The task was to design a branch of the Cambridge Public Library in a semi-downtrodden area of Cambridge near the MIT campus in an effort to revitalize the urban fabric of that space. Seeing that the styles of architecture already present in the site were failing, I sought to introduce an abstract, foreign body that uses motion and direction to focus the human activity towards the street, while encapsulating the literary activity that occured within.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is one of the top scientific research facilities in the world. In order to maintain this status, it must continually renovate and create new infrastructure. Part of this process involves the demolition of outdated structures. Scheduled to be demolished was a United States Post Office that served the residents and researchers that worked at the Laboratory facilities. My task was to design a hypothetical replacement Post Office for Brookhaven National Laboratory that enhanced the quality of life and better suited the suburban nature of the area.

The Christian Science Center in Boston is a major cultural hub for the entire metropolitan area. Despite its cultural prominence, the plaza has a weak spot in which people rarely congregate and quickly pass through. My task was to design a space that respects the original I.M. Pei design, while encouraging human interaction and activity. Through the introduction of a café that draws on the Brutalist style of the site and focuses the views towards the interior of the site, I created a mini-plaza that recreates the activity of the site as a whole.

As an architect, it is important to understand history and its architecture as to better inform our designs, learning from both the mistakes and successes of our predecessors. As part of this historical learning, I have analysed the work of several important architects, including:• Asilo d’Infanzia Sant’Elia (Terragni)• University of Aveiro Library (Siza)• Courtyard House (Mies)• Carpenter Center (Corbusier)• Villa Savoye (Corbusier)• Jacobs House (Wright)

In Northeastern University’s architecture studio courses, there is often a smaller design project to complement the major design project of each semester. These projects help reinforce design ideas and drawing abilities. Besides these design projects, I often like to digitally model spontaneous architectural ideas and designs as they come to me. Both of these categories are featured here.
