“Restoring the Balance” within fine food and lifestyle is the key ingredient which has inspired the creation and ambiance of lifestyle concept store Red Earth. The butterfly symbolizes bringing new life to something old and restoring beauty to something unsightly. The unsightly being the old industrial building the store is now situated in. The butterfly starts life as a caterpillar, a symbol of the beginning stages of transformation and preparation for growth. The caterpillar then evolves into something beautiful, the Red Earth butterfly which as significance for the transformation of the old building to a retail space creating an experiential brandscape and commercial entity.

In store aesthetics are immediately apparent and finely manifests the unique brandscape of Red Eath. However brands within each department are not so distinctively visible as together the departments present the Red Earth brand as a whole to the customer.

Dining: Looking for some alternatives to the well-worn staples of the Christmas Day table? Cathy O’Clery meets three people who are combining tradition with individual style for the big day family feast.

Putting On The GlitzIt has been quite a year for Lisa Collins, who has opened the new family flagship store Red Earth in Mullingar. Based in an old warehouse 10,000 sq. ft. shop has brought glitz and glamour to the midlands in the form of a lifestyle concept store, food hall and café. It is a brave move to open such a large scale operation in a recession but the Collins family know what they are about. Lisa’s parents have been in the retail business for many years, with Genesis Fine Arts and Mindy Brownes Interiors. With less emphasis on big ticket items and more focus on decorating accessories at good prices. Red Earth is doing a brisk trade in the few weeks it has been open.

Collins may be only 23 but she knows the retail business inside out. After studying media and journalism

she managed Mindy Brownes Interiors concession in Arnotts and she followed up with a masters in Marketing. It coincided with her families new venture and she has been involved from the concept stage, buying, branding and marketing and now in the busy Christmas period on the shop floor.

When the family do get to finally enjoy the festive season by sitting down to eat around 6pm on Christmas day. Sparkle and shimmer sets the tone for their fine-dining feast, a traditional fair with a contemporary twist.

Choosing a silver and white theme with a dash of purple, Collins table is full of layered glamour, it’s over the top but not to serious, gloriously wrapped Christmas present, the table is designed to bring festive cheer, with table runners placed over table cloths, vases of Christmas baubbles & silver edged fine crockery.

The table is full of detail beaded napkin rings with organza napkins, silver bird topped butter dishes and mother of pearl cutlery tied up in purple ribbons. There is a great sense of enjoyment and generosity.

I always spend Christmas at home with my family in Mullingar. We have a rule in our house, we all have to be home early Christmas Eve. Home is usually very busy throughout the year, my mum often refers to it as a train station-so at Christmas, it is nice to have some quality family time together.

In our house we exchange our gifts on Christmas Eve, the TV is usually turned off and traditional music tends to be turned on. It’s an intimate time to spend with one another. We always have our table setting prepared the night before, we usually have one setting for

Christmas breakfast and then something more glamours and rich for dinner at about 5 o’clock. After dinner whether permitted we usually like to go out of the house and bring the dogs for a walk maybe to the lake, it feels great after a hearty Christmas dinner.

On the Menu: Dublin bay prawns stuffed with Atlantic crab, free range roast turkey breast opposed to a full turkey, covered in lemon and basil. Ham covered with Red Earth marmalade and nut crusted organic glaze. Finally Christmas day dinner isn’t Christmas without Red Earths pudding and minced pies served with Baileys flavoured crème anglaise.

Wine? Bodegas Muriel Crianz and for dessert sweet Anges Riesling.

Music? Michael Buble and Katherine Jenkins

Who would be your ideal Christmas guest: Graham Norton. I think he would keep the family entertained all day.

What are your style tips for a well decorated table? Start off by coordinating your table setting with you room décor. This year vintage inspired is really big, so I would advise using crystal glass wear and vintage inspired tea cups and delph. To add sophistication use long elegant dinner candles to reflect light of the crystals. Personalise your seating with creative name tags such as inscribing your guests names with gold felt pen on to Holly. Wine charms are also an extra special touch eliminate the problem of losing your glass of wine.

Sample work of styling of Mindy Brownes Interiors and catalogue re-launch.

I have directly dealt with designers of our products and have also been heavily involved in buying and sourcing of the product outside of Ireland and engaged in many successful buying trips to Hong Kong and China. Alongside other team members at our company I have direct experience in bringing home interior products from concept, design and manufacture to the market place. The styling of shoots and working alongside photographers is of utmost importance in delivering the brand identity to both our wholesale customers and direct target market.

The arrangement of this lifestyle imagery is Nordic inspired. A major trend direction for Winter 2012. Precise product selection from the brands product portfolio can allow for individual looks to develop whilst still in keeping with the brand concept. The colour pallet, textures and materials used for this look has created a Scandi look. This is the opening page of Accessories for the new Mindy Brownes catalogue creating a Scandinavian charm, bringing the new catalogue in a new direction which is crisp and clean. The second example of my styling for the new Mindy Brownes catalogue is Classic Glam inspired. Here I have maximized product placement and incorporated many products from accessories, lighting, frames and mirrors. Although styling is not always practical I believe it can allow for ideas and inspirations that one can bring to the home. I have also placed external products in the shot to humanize the imagery.
